2022 - Top 12 Bafang Ultra M620 Ebikes

So essentially, just pretend it has the 'LUNA' logo on the downtube and it would pass as a Luna z1.

I've made a separate video on my channel which focuses on my initial impressions which you can view here

Hope everyone's keeping safe and well ✌🏿

About 1:08-1:10
@Ebiker33 has a good eye. I had to watch it a couple of times to see it. If you blink at the wrong time you'll miss it. I wouldn't want it on one of my bikes, but playing in the mud frequently might make a good case for leaving it.....

I don't know about your bikes,
but my 2 Bafang 1000W Ultra G510 motors does not have any vents on either side of the motor, in the area of what appears to be the vent lines, in either Uart or Canbus flavor.
Are you sure yours does? Check and see............

Tia,
Don

Must be toking with Rome.

@Neeko DeVinchi
LOL dude take that shipping sticker off your M620 your blocking the cooling vents 🤣
Good eye👍🏿
I didn't even realise until I watched it again 😅.
Truth be told, the sticker is still on (even after being cleaned multiple times 😀).

But I haven't encountered any problems so, I'll guess I might aswell keep it on........until it one day losses its adhesive.

Rob Rides did a nice feature and documented his build - named it the "Cheeb" and then sold it on eBay for around $5K. Part 1 below.

Rob's video was insightful regarding the Dengfu E10.

I'm not sure if he intended to cover the E22 at a later stage but I documented my experiences on the E22 Frame Thread 👍🏿

That Biktrix-Monte Capro Ultra looks amazing. Too bad there is almost no information or feedback in the Internet about this bicycle. I'm wondering how that Bafang 620 compares with Yamaha PW-X in terms if reliability.

Well it's robust

The Bafang 620 is the go to for independents that want the most power, they replaced the plastic gear when it failed with a steal gear, that was a while back.
The biggest issue with the 620 right now is that when they switched it over to Canbus it lost some level of customization compared to the old controller, it is also infamous for breaking chains with a throttle because it has so much torque, when using the wrong gears or techniques accelerating. One owner reported he figured it out after breaking three chains. Other than that I haven't heard of to many issues, it was a cargo Ebike motor that was basically taken and put onto other Ebikes to give them even more torque/power, so for everyday use on standard Ebikes it's won't have issues. Also I don't think the Yamaha even has a throttle?

My riding buddy has a Giant with a PW-X and the only thing I notice comparatively is that he can't keep up unless I want him to. Also I just rode my M620 Z1 for over 26 miles, including some very technical single track, using the throttle along with pedaling and never once felt like the chain would snap but I have my throttle tuned so that it has a soft start. As it came from the factory it would buck you right off if you grabbed a handful. I do agree that the M620 has the power to snap chains but it is tameable.

Yamaha does not have throttle and Yamaha PW-X is 80Nm 250W. But it is maintenance free for life (at least this is what Yamaha claims in the user manual) and trouble free (mine is 5 years old and has around 15000 speed derestricted maximum power mode nasty weather miles and still going strong on the original battery with around 900 full charging cycles). So I'm wondering if I can switch to a bicycle with Bafang m620 to gain more power, speed and battery capacity but still be maintenance and trouble free with comparable battery lifespan. I am not too worried about snapping chain. I will probably use thick chain with Kindernay XIV gearhub anyway (like I do on my Yamaha powered bicycle) to forget about chain stretching and gears shift mechanism maintenance forever.

So I'm wondering if I can switch to a bicycle with Bafang m620 to gain more power, speed
More speed can be obtained by going into the controller and taking off the traditional cap it comes with which is 32kph or 20mph.
Or bring it up to 28mph for class 3, really for safety reasons you don't want to go much faster than that anyways.
The real gain on the M620 is the torque to hill climb, in my opinion you can already go pretty fast on a good quality analog bike, mountainous hilly terrain is where the M620 shines, not going super fast but actually able to ride up instead of walking up even if it is only at 15 mph is huge improvement over analog bikes or ebikes that are basically torque weaklings, 250W powering 80Nm is weak, 1500W powering 160nm is going to climb stuff you can't right now.

Big issue with the Ultra/M620 is you can't/shouldn't discuss capability without understanding the difference in the tunable UART based M620, and the locked down CANbus M620. IMHO, a UART based M620 with the Frey "Smooth" tune installed is a Gorilla motor that can dance! The CANbus is just a Gorilla....

I'm not going to say the M620 will out climb another bike either, because with the gearing involved, I think you might be dealing with wheel spin as the limiting factor? The bigger deal with the Ultra motors, either of them, is they are not going to be as picky about what gear they are in, especially when accelerating from a stop. The bigger motors are absolute torque monsters able to accelerate from a stop in 6th gear (of 9 or 10) for instance, without overloading anything. Thinking that maybe a 250w motor may object to that kind of treatment.

I think that M620 drive train reliability is going to have something to do with maintenance and rider experience/skill. Clearly a motor capable of 160nm is able to place enormous loads on the drive train. I don't feel I'm doing anything extraordinary maintaining my Ultra, and it's got 1500 miles on the original chain - that's showing very little wear. I can deal with that kind of wear in exchange for the performance level being delivered pretty easily.....
My thought anyway, FWIW.

I think that @Surly here might take a different view on that as I believe he has a big timed adventure on your side of the pond planned using his E22 bike? Otherwise it is true that EU/Class 1 bikes can't really keep pace and it isn't due to the fact that the M620 is throttle able either! At some point I'm sure that an Open Class will form at events on closed courses, at least here in the US perhaps just because 'Merica is all about motor heads.

As an aside a few nights ago on some quite technical/tight and rooty single track I was last in line following the boys on their push bikes that built and knew the trails on all but the uphill sections.....having to ride the throttle due to my error plugging the PAS sensor in the wrong spot when I had the motor apart recently....Love the throttle for taking off and the odd blip but having to depend on it sucks quite frankly and I would much rather use the pedals.

The plastic gear never failed at stock wattage. I has one for five years and never had a problem.
