Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

The weather forecast today was showing early rain and then drying up, when I woke it was dry so I decided to go earlyish! Just as I set off I could feel rain in the air, unbelievably it rained the whole 40 miles but the roads barely got wet! 😮 It was like I had a little rain cloud following me the whole route, strangest thing ever haha! It was such a fun ride despite the rain, it makes a big difference when there is very little wind, that made it so much more enjoyable for sure! It actually felt like Spring for once!

It wasn't the best day for photos but I did take a few (ok more than a few haha), its strange how it always looks better through the camera lens!;) There are actually sings of things warming up at last, not quite the 90's thankfully (I hate heat:p) like some of you in the US but the high 60's which will be very welcome! 1,913 miles now covered, I was hoping I would be well past 2,000 by now but May has been awful this year!

Life in the Great Midwest…
Clocked another 27 miler (now over 1500 for the Allant+7) on a beautiful morning. Life is springing out all over with hundreds of birds along the trail causing me to run the gauntlet as they fly above my head squawking/chirping/hissing at me. Some of the Red-Wing Blackbirds even landing a few blows to the top of my helmet! I don’t dare look up! Trees abound with cocoons/caterpillars. The corn/soybean fields are sprouting from the recent rains. Ah, spring!

Got a wee bit more of a ride in today with a slight modification to the loop from yesterday. In the process, I was able to climb a hill that I was unable to climb with the old SLA batteries (I am not in better shape; unless ROUND is a shape!). My new meter up at my bars indicated the internal resistance is so high that the battery voltage dropped well below 20V. So today was 16.9miles and 119Wh consumed…

The first stop was at a common find in California; a local winery.

The next two pictures contain two rare things here: a lone blue heron and an active California farm…

And a few miles from this sighting were these signs showing the area bike paths and the other the areas water shed to the SF bay…

Was a dang fun ride on the old gal! Please note I used the THUMBNAIL feature so it doesn’t take a long time to load the page…. (Hint hint hint!)

It was a much better day today, pretty much perfect for cycling which makes a nice change! Everything just clicked into place, days like this make you want to cycle all day but with limited time I had to settle for just under 42 miles! I decided to chance the beautiful Clyde Valley with all the garden centres which were less busy due it being a week day, this weekend they will be mobbed for sure as the forecast is showing around 20C! I will be going elsewhere and hoping to get quiet roads and a much longer ride!

With scenes like this it can only make you forget about all the doom and gloom and enjoy the moment!

Tomorrow will be a rainy day so it will be a rest day, next ride will be Sunday which I'm hoping will be a long one with the forecast looking pretty good at the moment!🤞

Beautiful countryside indeed!

That tree reminds me of a lot of modern ebike frames around the motor.

Did the Moel Famau ride yesterday with a friend, gorgeous warm day, but also one of those days where things start going wrong and then keep going..
A mile in...practically straight up..realised I had left my phone on the dashboard of the van.
Went back for it..grrrrrr.
Got two punctures, within 300 yards, then my chain kept popping off the chainwheel, everytime I stopped pedaling.
Eventually discovered the freewheel had locked solid, which you dont notice straight away on a midrive because it doesnt try to turn the pedals, just the chainwheel, and the resultant slack caused the chain to flip off...so had to do the rest of the ride always under throttle or pedal, which is very difficult indeed.
Bumped into the rangers at the top and a cordial argument started on wether the path was a bridleway/ unrestricted path or footpath.
Ordenance survey maps were drawn from holsters...nervous walkers looked on.
I mean its only 1200 years old, youd have thought we would have sorted it by now.
Opinion was undecided and feelings were running high.
We retreated, only to find every single hiker backing the rangers were going our way and the entire ride back was punctuated with dissaproving looks and loud tuts.
We had wanted to fly the drone around the top, so we flew it from a few miles away, which was quite epic , unbelievable how quick it got back up there, did a full cinematic circle then flew back.

Havnt got any pics..waiting for the drone SD card off my mate and editing the vid.
Only got this silly drone special effect he sent me...thats me pumping up the tyre..

The monument at the top..which has mostly fallen down..was built in 1800 to honour King Charles 3rd, the guy who lost the American colonies, bit harsh to judge him just for that, he was also King when we defeated the French and youd all be speaking French over there if we'd have lost.
Which obviously would have been an horrific outcome.
It never actually got finished and was strangely built in Wales...maybe losing the war of independence means you go to the back of the list on monument day.

Edit.
Hes just sent me a short clip.

Wasn't that King George III???

today i took advantage of a quiet afternoon at work to check out some new scenery, and try to escape the ever present 25mph headwinds that have been popping up here every day around 3pm.

rideStats.jpg

i felt a bit slow at times, and was pretty gassed out for the last climb. total power usage was 92 watt hours, much higher than my usual rides which are typically between 1 and 1.5 wh/mile, versus just over 2 for this one. similarly watt hours per vertical was about 20% higher than usual.

after a short train ride from my office, hit this path north. i guess this counts as a "rail trail"! ?!?!

4036-railTrail.jpg

after the end of the greenway trail, a few miles of suburban arterials quickly open to this lightly traveled road.
4046-flowers.jpg

classic california "country" road. heavy shade was a big plus.
4062-classicCali.jpg

a fair bit of climbing, broken into 4 separate 400-800 foot ish climbs.
4069-curveClimb.jpg

lovely country, but the roads were certainly a bit rough in spots!
4082-canopyRoad.jpg

the green of the trees disguises how very, very dry it is out there. we've had about 8 inches of rain this rainy season, less than half normal to date, and are unlikely to get any more until october or november.
4077-flatland.jpg

4085-reservoirLong.jpg

most of the ride was adjacent to the watershed for this and one other reservoir.
4086-reservoir.jpg

took a 5 minute break at the top to get off the bike and stretch out, which helped my lower back immensely! just about all downhill from here :D
4083-creoTree.jpg

after the quick descent of around 900 feet, time to hop ont he train and head back to civilization :D
