New High Torque IGH announced by 3x3

Kindernay VII hub has 28% gear steps and I have absolutely no issue at all with that on ebike. On non-electric bike this may be undesirable depending on the rider preference.
Electrons are the great equalizer.
At times I "should" briefly downshift but with the m620 having so much torque it's just easier (and more fun) to tap PAS up and power thru. But that comes at the cost of some efficiency and most rides I'm looking to exercise.
I also enjoy at times having to shift and adjust PAS quickly. It makes the ride more interactive and fun like driving a sports car with a manual transmission.
 
Mid drives are going to need something like this, to replace the standard drive trains.
There is a power limiting wall, past which the torque of the motor just chews up and spits out the drive trains. Something like this, or make the drive trains out of depleted uranium.
Too heavy, probably titanium next step.
 
OK. I just tested shifting under load without motor assist and I was not able to upshift and downshift under load (I did not crank the twist shifter like crazy to not brake the stuff, but I put enough force after which shifting is unreasonably hard). I eased force on pedals but not completely stopped pedaling and I was able to shift but the shifting had significantly more resistance (both up and down) than shifting without load.

I would not practice shifting this gearhub under load.
Any more more updates or mid-term assessments on the performance, usability, reliability of your 3X3 setup?
 
@TPEHAK how do you control the shifting of gears on this IGH? Is it some sort of remote switch, or is it automatic? And, if the latter, is there some way to set the cadence speed to force an upshift/downshift?

I’ve been curious about IGHs, but I’ve never had an opportunity to ride one. Bafang has a really cool 5-speed hub, but it’s automatic, and I honestly don’t think that would work for me. Not sure, though.

There is a twist shifter on the right handlebar with 2 cables go to the IGN. You twist the shifter one direction or another until it clicks to the next gear (you can feel indentations). You can twist and jump simultaneously over as many gears as you want and you do not need to keep pedaling during the shifting processes.

I see there are other bluetooth-based electronic shift controls too. Nine speeds sounds perfect to me for my off-road usage (mostly trails). If I ever get a hold of a mid-drive bike in the future, it sounds like this transmission is exactly what I’d want!!!!
 
@TPEHAK How is your hub after first 6 month? Any issues? Something new you discovered what was not obvious after initial installation and first use? Since my Kindernay is close to it's end, I am looking for what I can use next and there are pretty much two choices: Rohloff or 3x3. You are one of few people actually riding 3x3, so your feedback is very important! Any other resources where people are discussing the reliability of the 3x3 hubs? Were there any negatives discovered (like the famous Kindernay leaks). Any information is helpful! Thanks!

It still works no problem. I also installed a second one on another electric bicycle with 4500W VESC for Bafang M600 controller and it works fine too.

Great news! I am trending towards 3x3 as more modern and ebike-friendly. How do find the rotary shifter? This is largest concern I have - cable actuator, no push/trigger option, etc. They have new electric trigger shifter, but it won't work with my motor :(
 
I am fine with the rotary shifter. It has some freeplay but it works and you do not need to deal with oil so it is easier to install and maintain than Kindernay shifter (besides the cable lines are more rigid than hydraulic lines and require more careful routing and avoiding sharp turns).

well, it depends. One things where oil is superior is hidden installation and angles - you can apply pretty much any shape to it and it works exactly the same. Cable is much more demanding to the maintaining the as straight as possible installation to make it work and doesn't like angles at all. It is not a showstopper, but lass convenient than Kindernay shifter to me. And yes, I still consider Kindernay shifter to be as close as perfection as possible though all shifters I used (when it worked as expected).
Overall, happy to see your 3x3 works fine. Do you know any forums/topics where it is actively discussed? Would love to read more owners experience stories.

Seems hydraulic shifting has too many flaws to be practical. A few years ago a third party came out with hydro shifting for Rohloff and it died quickly.
Cables are just reliable... >9000mi and it just works. And what ever the set up, once acclimated you just do it second nature without thinking about it.
If anything, e_shifting is the future.

That's a good question as it's not rocket science... but as it stands now it seems to be beyond what the bike industry can produce reliably.
