Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

Fertile plain …

At the furthest point of the ride (Coominya; 35km on map), I spied a small group of presumably retired (8:05am on a Friday!) bikers. A waved greeting.

An hour later we met up in the park at Lowood and, after patronising the local coffee shop (post #642; right click to open in new tab and not lose this page), rode back to Fernvale together (62km on map). Although they had serious eMTBs — Trek Rail, Specialized Levo, Giant Trance — they made an effort to look after me. "Come along with us next week. No one ever gets left behind… " I think I'll take up the offer but will have to figure out how to use Messenger in order to keep in touch.

Fortunately for me, it takes just two minutes from home to get onto the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail — 161 km of gravel-riding escapism if one goes the full distance (and the same on the way back!). Yes, this is the same trail that was blocked by the old bull featured on the previous page (post #861; 65km on map). The trail doesn't lack variety!

Note the iPhone-being-charged icon (from Bosch battery via Kiox).

Wow, you can ride for days! Enjoy :)

First ride of the new year. It has been way to cold until today (50F). Has been in the 20’s and 30’s until today and damn windy. Great 20 mile ride. Didn’t care about speed or time just enjoy the fantastic day.

Kabacki Gravel/e-MTB Ride :)

The admin of one of FB cycling groups -- at the same time the manager of road bikes dept. at a Warsaw Wilanów Decathlon store -- Michał A -- led a group ride under the name of Kabacki Gravel/MTB on last Sunday. As I joined the Graveloza, I could not participate in Michał's group ride. Yet, he had delivered GPX route to all who wanted to join. Having resigned from making a metric century on Saturday, I drove to the southernmost part of Warsaw and re-constructed the trip but on e-MTB this morning :)

The black portion of the 150 mm travel fork and of 110 mm travel damper can say something about the bumps met on my ride ;)

Mixed terrain: Dirt/mud, forest path, ice covered gravel fire-road, sand. Also asphalt, paving blocks...

I was mostly riding in forests today. The sign in the bottom photo bans horse riding and even walking horses there.

AAARGH! Wat do :) I just made a small detour over the woods. (I don't ride a full suspension e-MTB for nothing) :D

That was the beginning of the most exciting part of the ride: an easy technical trail along River Zielona (Green).

Wonderful read and photos again! Thank you for sharing your ride with us. 😊🚴‍♀️

Rode into a battery sucking headwind and thought I'd put in some miles and then stop and have a beer. When I came to a critical point, the sky was looking a bit suspicious so I went back home, and it was a longer ride than planned. 27 miles and my butt is not happy.

This was the wildlife of the day.

Gobble gobble.

Im getting desperate now, so been looking through old rides and this is one I want to do again as soon as Wales opens up.

Gorgeous ride from Moel Arthur Hill Fort... Moel is Welsh for hill...over to Moel Famau , past it's 200yr old Jubilee tower, which was built for King Charles 3rd, the Mad King, who had something to do with some scrap in the colonies, then down into the... stunning and terrifying in a car... Llanbedr valley.

moel2.jpg

They keep threatening to restore it, but work always stops for various reasons, I can actually see it from my house with the naked eye and it's 30 miles away.
It's quite a magical ride on a quiet day, but it's going to be some time before the crowds die down.

This is the start of the ride near Moel Arthur, and that was my first emtbike build

moel.jpg

It's not long, but very tough, so steep that the Hub drive had to be pushed up a good bit of the main climb, Im hoping my mid drive will fare better.

Yesterday was another nice day, albeit a little cooler, but still very nice for March.
I decided to give the Johnny Watts tires another go, and push them a little harder and see what the limits are.
Found 'em...and to be fair, wasn't surprised

Strava March20_2.JPG

Strava March20_1.JPG

A few things about the route. I didn't start Strava on my phone right away. I was intending to continue my test of various tech, and was trying to use Samsung watch for Strava, and phone for Ridecontrol. I worked in tech a long time and one of my experiences (aka lesson's learned) is that when things work ONCE - that doesn't mean anything.

So, where I started up this Strava session, on my phone, was a few KMs from my actual start, as although the watch said it was recording, it showed no distances. Since I knew that Giant RideControl still isn't working to sync with Strava, I wasn't leaving that to chance either - so phone app it would be. Later - Giant app was consistent - While stopped for a sandwich, the bike powered down and when I fired it up to take off again, cadence and battery levels did not refresh. Disappointed, but not something I am going to lose any sleep over, nor planning to spend and $$$ to fix,

On the right of the map, in the circle, was where I was on my way home and rode some of the alleys around my home. Our fence had been "tagged" a few weeks ago, and I wanted to see if there was much more of that crap occurring in my neighborhood. There were a few remnants, but not too many. Mine was cleaned up a few days ago - the city provides a service that cleans it up for free. As I have a Vinyl fence, I wanted the pros to clean it up and they did a fine job. 2nd Incident in 15 years in that home.

Back to the ride itself. As mentioned in other posts, I have multiple accesses onto the park. Some surface, and some via underpasses under a major feeder route.
Today I went left and climbed up from there.

20210320_122441.jpg

Once up top, I decided that today would be some up and down, although for a limited time as I had a finite time to ride and get home.
I headed across the park to some downhills and then back up again. Did a few runs that way and when the surfaces were dry, the JWs were fine. When wet and muddy - pay attention (more on that in a bit).

Mostly dry:

20210320_125034.jpg 20210320_125037.jpg 20210320_125039.jpg 20210320_125042.jpg 20210320_125324.jpg 20210320_125327.jpg 20210320_131311.jpg

Not so much:

20210320_131245.jpg 20210320_131311.jpg 20210320_131317.jpg

Result:

20210320_124401.jpg 20210320_131251.jpg 20210320_134119.jpg

So when tires are gooped up with mud, and you are climbing on leaves, one needs to be careful with manoeuvres - mainly anything too sharp.
I need to make a fairly sharp turn at point X on the map, and as I pushed hard on the pedals the rear tire broke loose, threw me sideways and I needed to do an unceremonious dismount. Nearly a crash - which would have been a bugger, but not the most graceful dismounts either and I think I almost had saved it when that larger tree helped me make up my mind about staying on!
Avoided any damages to myself and bike (to the right with a lovely tuck and roll), and continued on from there.

20210320_132010.jpg

That was about a third of the way into the ride and no further incidents from there. I did take a couple more muddy routes but with some new perspectives on handling.

Once home, after the alley reconnaissance, I figure I better clean things up a bit. The bike was filthy and the jockey wheels were clogged up pretty badly.

Happy to say, all cleaned up now - just need to lube the chain and go.
Damp rag cleaning is OK, but I'll need to plan a trip to the carwash one of these days for a "careful" spray clean.
This is still Alberta, and I won't hook up my own sprayer for at least 5 or 6 more weeks.

Additional info on ride:
Max descent = 20.1%
Max ascent = 24.2 %
No audiobook - perhaps start a new one today.
Ass Saver rear fender did it's job - no outerwear laundry required - yet.
Front fork fender did it's job too - when the mud is released from the tires there's little balls of mud going everywhere!

Will probably be heading out again today - likely more of the same.
More and more of my preferred smaller trails are snow free now and a lot that aren't completely snowless yet, have enough area's to ride safely without studs.
More mud of course, but I'm not ready to put Forekasters on yet - as more pathways thies week with non-MTB friends.

Lastly, a pic that I liked the way it worked out. I like trees...

Bolimoza, or "First Day of Spring"

Still sounding like a name of unpleasant illness, that "Bolimoza"? Right. The ride was not pleasant.
My intention had been to circumnavigate the Bolimowski Landscape Park, riding paved roads only, hence my Vado chosen for the ride.

1616347592234.png

(A perceptive eye will notice a long Presta valve on the front wheel; see Presta vs. Schrader thread) :) 10 km from Żyrardów, it was only strong cold wind indicating the matters might not go as well as I had thought. Minus one to zero degrees Celsius was not that scary (see good gloves).

1616347812071.png

In Starowiskitki, or, jokingly "Old Wisconsin" :) First day of Spring, aye?

1616347926205.png

A sanctuary in Miedniewice, Mazovia. Who can spot it's snowing?

1616348017065.png

As much as I praise our "European" roads in Mazovia, that one (at least 6 km long segment) was a disgrace!

1616348114953.png

No pictures from the large (and nice) village of Bolimów because cold drizzle, sleet and snowfall made me unwilling to take any pictures there. The road 705 was good. And the long bike path was so much attractive I preferred riding it in solitude than share the road with cars. More snow! And it was the upwind ride leg.

1616348378997.png

Budy Grabskie. Even more snow! (I was there a week ago but the Graveloza ride led through forest on the opposite bank of River Rawka).

1616348493896.png

I hated riding upwind, in drizzle, sleet and snow, and suffering my bad leg ache I did same as my riding mate Cezar did a week ago: Shortened the ride via Hwy 719 (a.k.a. "my home road"). Downwind and in full Turbo mode. I have had enough.

1616349127375.png

Ride Map with POI. Interestingly, there are two villages of Miedniewice. The other is in the Land of Łódź. Rode through both of them on the same ride and was really surprised!

1616349281242.png

Terrible weather. Members of FB cycling fan-page who decided to ride out today all say: "That was not a cycling day".

Great post as always. Your posts really make me want to explore Poland by ebike. History, great food, friendly people, interesting culture and my grandfather's place of birth. What is the best time of year to ride there, Stefan? Is their somewhere a person can rent a good ebike for a week?

1616355616324.png

I had an almost perfect 50 mile ride today, spoiled only by a total moron in a BMW that close passed me at high speed (on a wide road with nothing coming in the opposite direction ) I really felt the wind from his metal crate hitting me hard but thankfully I kept my bike in a straight line at almost 40 mph...

Apart from that it was a truly epic ride on perfect dry roads, I didn't even have to clean my bike after it! Unlike @RandallS now that was a filthy bike! ;) Lots of cyclists out enjoying the sun today, it was pretty chilly when I set off but it warmed up nicely! I'm so glad I had my spare battery with me, the hills sure ate into my first battery very quickly! My amazing bike will be 3 years old next week and I can honestly say it has given me an amazing 3 years with almost 14,000 miles covered!

I'd say it is mid-May to mid-September. August is dry and can be very warm (not as warm as Texas, though) :) E-bike rental by week is something I have not heard of. Warsaw is easy for daily rentals as Specialized Warsaw are happy to rent their brand new demo e-bikes on a daily basis for chicken money. Tourist resorts also offer daily rentals of decent e-bikes.

Shall covid relent, I offer I would make a loan of Vado and Trance to you and Nancy for a week, free (both size M). You just rent a station-wagon or a van, that's it :)

That is most generous of you Stefan. Thank you for such a kind and generous offer.

Obviously we would want to explore your part of Poland with you, getting to know you face to face and make our immersion in Poland with you to guide, entertain and translate. Thus, at least for that part our explorations, we would need to rent another bike for one of us.

I know not everyone in Poland has a mastery of English comparable to you or Joseph Conrad. Not speaking a single word of Polish, I was wondering about the general fluency in English I can anticipate.

It goes without saying that all of this depends on whether the global pandemic has been brought to heel as well as that status of my health and whether I can stray far from my doctors and for enough time. As we get closer to summer, we shall see what is possible and what makes sense.

We can continue this conversation through private messages and exchange email addresses there.

I am truly humbled by your kindness and generosity.

A buddy of mine and I tackled some single tracks starting at Kin Canyon, followed by The Pines then finished off our ride on single trails along the east side of the river at the entry from the Riverbend Rec Area. Conditions on this fine Spring morning were perfect. -3 C and the ground was still frozen thanks to the overnight low temps. We both agree that the studs provided additional traction on the trails particularly on the climbs.:)

We'll be back at it first thing Monday morning. :D

The Bikes (Levo Comp and Trance XE)

We crossed paths with a couple of volunteers from the Central Alberta Mtn Bike Trail Alliance. There were busy flagging spots along the trials to better designate private from municipal property.

The Trance had me humming this oldie but goodie from the ‘70s. 🎹

Kelvin is pretty quick on that Levo, and I see why you've left the studs on.
But it won't be much longer now. Looks great!
He’s lighting quick and his knowledge of the local trails is incredible! I didn’t think that he would have his Levo back so soon. He picked it up from Bow Cycle on Saturday after they replaced the cassette and chain. Runs like new now. Thanks to the Trance I was able to catch occasional glimpses of his rear end along the trail. It wasn’t until the final stretch that I think he eased up a bit for me. ;)

Boy, that was a major mudfest that you encountered. I thought conditions would have dried up by now down there. We would likely have faced similar consequences if our departure date was later in the afternoon. That Fathom Red still looks great underneath all of that mud!! 😎

Another ride today in dry but windy conditions, the wind is going to be more of a factor as the week goes on so I'm hoping to get more rides in before it gets too bad! 34 very enjoyable miles, I didn't even see 1 cyclist today so its looking like most people are returning to work now (or having a lie in ;))

No close passes today despite being on busier roads, in fact I was quite surprised how well behaved the drivers were! I thought my legs would be tired after yesterday's 50 miler but they were fine, tomorrow might be a different story if I manage to get out! 811 miles now covered in 2021, if I can match or improve on last year I will be very happy but 6,223 miles is a tall order!

Brisbane River
from Burtons Bridge, Borallon
The rain continues and I slip out for short rides, hoping for break long enough to complete the ride. Sometimes reward, sometimes not. At the end of the day Ride with GPS presents me with a confusion of brief excursions joined together like a spider's web.

Tomorrow looks to be so wet that I'm unlikely to escape at all. Hurry up winter!
