Is the BBSHD the newer motor then? I hear what you say about high speeds cause mine will do 36 mph. I did have my brakes checked recently and they have held up which was surprising. I've smelled them occasionally.
Do they still make the BBSO1 and 2 motors? I have seen posts here by members that have the 52 tooth so is that not as big of a problem with the BBSHD motors? I'll never go that way, if anything I'll put in a smaller sprocket, I'm just curious.

The 52 teeth is fine for 20inch tires/rims on the bbs02 . Over 600 miles on my bike when I sold it without issue. I lived in an area where flat roads were rare. Pretty much the only bike I'd consider a 52T is the 20 inch tire.
THE MAJOR thing with ANY mid-drive is DO NOT CLIMB HILLS on the small rear sprocket , anything less than a 32 tooth rear climbing major hills you're a moron for lack of a better term.

The bigger BBSHD (and the Ultra) have quite a bit more power and come with sturdier controllers built into them for that reason. Because they are making more power (easily) they can be equipped with bigger chain rings - without overloading the motor.
And we sold hundreds every year and repaired scores every season. Lots of things last 600 miles. I could do starts from a dead stop in high gear for 600 miles, but...
We saw and learned a lot in a decade of selling BBS01 and BBS02 motors.

Sure. And depending on intended use a BBS01 can be a great motor. I have 2 36V 350W BBS01(a) from 2014 with thousands of miles. Mostly path and flat city street bikes, capable of 20MPH. With a 42T chain ring and 12T X 32T freewheel, I can ride them one speed in 3rd gear, about 14MPH.
I did 1801 miles in a little over a year and the BBSHD is still doing great. Did a little ride yesterday which was kinda cool because there was very little traffic.
