Yesterday and today, the weather has been hovering around +3C and I got in a couple of shorter rides.

No pictures taken yesterday as I didn't go out until later in the day and it was more about a quick ride and getting home before it got cooler and darker.

Today was a much nicer day, with lots of sunshine and not much wind and for the first time since I got my winter tires, I ventured out into some single track areas.

There were lots of walkers out today and when on the main paths it got a little crowded.
My normal access is via MUP, but today I took a different route and entered the park from a parking lot and followed a maintenance road that has a LOT of washed out areas and is considered closed. Everyone, including me, uses it anyways, and the deep ruts and eroded areas are no big deal for a bike. There was a lot of packed surfaces as well as lots of areas where the gravel surface was bare

I decided to take a rare selfie and as many of friends remark about my helmet - there IS truth in advertising.

20210107_140332.jpg

The hardpacked snow was really easy with the Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro's, although if for some reason you had to stop on an uphill spot, it was tricky to get going again. I was riding with my Suntour suspension post rather than my dropper, as the hardpack was a very uneven surface and could probably shake a filling out if you were riding without some sort of suspension.

As you can see, the surfaces are varied.
20210107_140821.jpg 20210107_141821.jpg 20210107_144231.jpg 20210107_135733.jpg 20210107_135736.jpg 20210107_135741.jpg 20210107_140816.jpg

I hadn't charged my battery up before I went out, and also hadn't put my neoprene battery blanket on either, so I chose a main path out, but ran into some pretty big ruts.
I took a picture of one section as it wasn't rideable without a potential crash and my shoulder is not up for that.
I had an ultrasound on it in the morning and although the technician couldn't tell me what he saw, his answer when I asked "how does it look - it feels like crap", his response was "when do you see your doctor again"... 🙁

20210107_145711.jpg 20210107_145719.jpg

I had a nice chat with a fellow who was out on his Fat Tire MTB (studded tires as well), and his wife who was walking their clearly elderly Golden Retriever, and he was smiling when he said "ah, one of those cheaters", and then he asked me a zillion questions on how I like my bike and my favorite routes on the hill. He was moaning about the climb he was about to make and I told him that it was my intended route as well. Rather than make him feel bad, I took off before him so I wouldn't have to blow by him going up the slope.

20210107_144235.jpg

All in all, a super couple of hours out on the park. As usual, I was listening to an Audiobook - this time Ian Rankin's "A Song for the Dark Times".
There's other threads to discuss that issue and let's leave those discussions over there please.

I judged my battery well, as I got home as I hit the 5% level - I could have babied it a bit more, but I didn't need to.

Lovin' the studs!
As I said to @LouLouLePew last week - "Studs on Studs!"

Still too dangerous for cycling, even walking is scary as I fell twice yesterday because I was stupid! It was worth it though as you can see from the pictures, they actually look like black and white photos! ;) Today I decided to try my cycling shoes for walking in the snow and ice and they were super grippy, hopefully I will get to use them on the bike again soon...

what andriod app/software do people use to track their rides?
something that maps where "i go" as i ride, not where a pre-planned route wants to take me...

Giant Explore E+1

Many of us use Ride with GPS which is available for Android and iPhone to record your ride. Back home, you can view your data by logging in to your Ride with GPS account in your web browser. Here is a screenshot of last January's rides.

Strava or RideWithGPS.
If you want plan your routes, be navigated and record your rides, the paid version of RideWithGPS seems to be the best. Strava has a better connectivity with sport mobile devices and some e-bikes but unfortunately Giant is still unable to export the rides to Strava.
Sorry David: you've already answered!

Rab, I'm equipped with studded tyres and even with traction devices for my riding boots! 😊

Be warned: it's expensive!
Since I don't actually use the RwGPS (my Vado can send detailed ride data to Strava, and RwGPS doesn't recognize e-bikes -- Strava does), I opted for a Strava subscription for USD60 a year (AUD77). Initially, I took a Basic subscription of RwGPS but changed my mind.

I use Strava, but go month to month. In November I chose to not renew the paid subscription and just use the free features.

To be honest, the only thing I miss is the real time speedometer. It only shows the average. But if I want a speedometer as well as cadence etc, I can run the Giant RideControl app as well, and leave Strava running in the background.

If I'm running those two, as well as listening to an audiobook, i have to make sure I take a battery pack for my phone. I have a toptube bag that fits the battery and a short USB cable plugs into the phone and lets me ride with the screen on. I use a QuadLock to hold the phone and am very happy with it.

Fortunately the weeds down the centre of the trail aren't bearers of tyre-piercing thorns; however, they are partial to hitching a ride and setting up home in our garden!

I wasn't quite sure what to photograph on this ride, so I stopped for a snack – after twenty-five minutes! – and inspiration. This cheerful young couple obliged. Thanks!

As I watched them disappear down the rail trail, I noticed the interesting cloud formation shown at the top of this page (pink arrows).

"Post-Ride Beer" E-Ride

Well. First to see my daughter Magda at the Social Care Home (DPS). I was on a tight appointment, yet I rode with 45/45 assistance to get some workout in the New Year 2021. Luckily I was on time. Mild backwind certainly helped meet the schedule!

Some time ago, I managed to make a married couple in Toruń become hopheads. Małgorzata (who is a social care worker herself; her husband is a University Professor) told me she had some excellent Polish craft beer for New Year's Eve. I thought I might get some myself because...

View attachment 75778
...there are as many as two craft-beer stores in my direct neighbourhood! So...

View attachment 75779
...I visited both of those on my way back, ending up with six cans of different excellent beer (including the one recommended by Małgorzata)! This one from Piwne Podziemie (Beer Underground) brewery felt as dense as cream!

In Hot Pursuit of An E-Biker

I stopped for a short rest at a bus stop in Falęcin (and had a pleasant talk with a runner met there) when I spotted an e-bike ridden by an elderly gentleman. How could I determine that was an e-bike? The type of motion. The guy was riding pretty fast but he was "peddling" (pedalling) :D at low cadence and effortlessly. Oh, you... I slowly replaced my helmet and goggles, turned the motor on, restarted my riding apps, pulled the gloves on, then... I switched to Turbo mode and attacked the pedals! What a ride! The other e-biker must have gained a kilometre ahead of me (yes he did; I've just checked it up on the map) so I was in a hot pursuit after him. I caught him on entering to Brwinów, drove onto the bike path and engaged in a conversation. He turned to be an LBS owner, selling, inter alia, e-bikes. He was just on a test ride of a Panasonic hub-drive motor e-bike, the classic design with the battery on the rear rack. As a person peddling :) e-bikes, he was not very much aware of the e-bike world. My Vado seemed to be a mystery for him. I had to explain to him the "S-Pedelec" concept etc. All in all, the pursuit gave me a good workout and it put me in excellent mood. Then I went shopping ales and stouts :)

That beer pic has gone on my family whatsapp..they love it

Although a few flakes have fallen today, they amounted to nothing. A balmy 35 degrees amd a slight drizzle for my first ride of the year. This is on a walking path, I just pulled onto it to get a picture and blow my nose good. There are no bike trails or lanes around here. This trail is a loop of a half mile so not worth riding on.

Nobody shot me and all drivers were courteous today. I think a Seahawks game is on so traffic was few and far between.

Cyberpunk 2077 Ride

As @Art Deco determined earlier, I am a person who needs a goal. So, I asked my FB close friends "Give me a reason to ride to Warsaw" already on last Thursday. A friend, Radosław (Radek) whose last name directly translates to Grizzle replied: "Why don't you see me?" It was enough to plan a longer ride for this Saturday :)

Cyberpunk 2077 Ride S (1 of 7).jpg

I'm fed up with usual routes to Warsaw. I chose one of roads I sometimes take to ride up North of my place, with the intention to turn eastwards and take roads with little of traffic. On the eastbound segment, I rode downwind, so I could hear the ambient. My Vado was totally silent: both mechanical and motor part. Combined with high ride speed and rapid bike acceleration, it gave me a sort of surreal feeling...

Cyberpunk 2077 Ride S (2 of 7).jpg

I was quite surprised to ride over the boring part of the route so fast and reach the west border of our capital so soon! My GPS navigation suggested I took the road at the left. That allowed me riding along the S8 expressway for a long distance and very conveniently.

Cyberpunk 2077 Ride S (3 of 7).jpg

The gross time of riding the 41 km was 2 hours (including waiting at a railway junction and taking a short rest). Radek let me bring my Vado into his flat so it wouldn't be stolen (Warsaw is a big city anyway). Radek is married (with kids), owns three cats, and apart of his other interests, he is a gamer. He was demonstrating the latest game known as CYBERPUNK 2077 to me. I told him that -- with my e-bikes and my winter "spacesuit" cycling clothes -- I already
have been Cyberpunk 2021 :D

Cyberpunk 2077 Ride S (4 of 7).jpg

Fake news media (incited by my gf @Brix) framed me into taking this picture! :D I actually don't drink alcohol on my rides, and my religion forbids me drinking mass-produced lager beer as seen in the photo. I appreciate a good jest though :) (My tea seen in the white mug).

Cyberpunk 2077 Ride S (5 of 7).jpg

On the return way. The Gdański Bridge, which is in my opinion the most beautiful of Warsaw bridges.

Cyberpunk 2077 Ride S (6 of 7).jpg

The left-bank part of Warsaw is located on the River Vistula escarpment. I was suggested by the GPS navigation to ride up the streets Boleść (lit. Pain), Mostowa, Długa and Bielańska towards the City. I had to ride on cobblestone of different quality all the way up! What a Pain! :) The red part seen at the left is the Warsaw Old Town with its Wall. The rest is the New Town. Bear in mind, there was nothing there back in 1945. Everything has been rebuilt since. Some parts of the Old and New Town had been "bettered" by reconstructing according to 15th c. plans instead of the pre-1944/1945 status.

Ride Metrics. While the outbound trip was downwind and dry, the return was upwind and it involved some sleet. Good clothing helped keep me warm and dry though!

Temperature Chart.jpg

An EBR user was anxious if a mid-drive motor of his e-bike would suffer from low temperatures. I don't think so. A motor, because of its limited efficiency, dissipates a lot of heat to keep it warm during the winter rides!

Wow, Stefan's Cyberpunk ride is a tough act to follow. I always feel like a virtual tourist when I read his posts.

It was yet another enjoyable day out on the trails this afternoon. I think that these horses thought so too. My morning ride, in comparison, was much colder but considering that the sun was shining bright I shouldn't really complain.

Plenty of people were out and about this weekend and it was also a picture-perfect setting for the X-country skiers who were getting full use out of the groomed runs as well.

Winter cycling is really gaining in popularity here as I’m seeing more of the fat-tire crowd prowling the trails. This grizzly codger on his e-bike caught my eye but he didn't appear to be in the mood to pause for a chit chat about his special ride even after I acknowledged him and slowed to a stop when we crossed paths twice. ;)

Nice..Im not liking it though.

I finally got a break in the weather and broke my duck for 2021, not a very pleasant day but at least it was a safe ride! We had a bit of a thaw yesterday and the rain finally cleared a lot of our snow but there was a yellow warning for ice this morning until 11am, so I waited until 11.30am and decided it was safe to go out! It was foggy at times and drizzling but I was determined to get out and despite the weather I enjoyed my 30 mile ride!

You can see the conditions here away from the gritted roads, it was treacherous!

The local loch was still partially frozen!

1610293107686.png

Tomorrow we are expecting heavy rain and strong winds and a temp of 8C so hopefully that will put a dent in the remaining ice! Tuesday is looking promising but back to below zero so I will wait to see what the conditions are like, I don't think the back roads will be rideable for a while yet!

Anyway it was good to get 2021 underway, my options will be limited for a while as we are only allowed to travel 5 miles outside our local area (or risk a hefty fine) but any chance I get will be taken!
