Battery safety education - Only you can prevent battery fires!

The Aventon instructions say the battery takes 4-5 hours to charge. Do not leave the battery unattended.

So they expect you to stand there for five hours and watch?!?

Don't be silly. But do be smart enough to be close enough to monitor the charge. I have a smoke detector within a foot or two.

My Ryobi power tools do the same thing.
The charger also goes into maintenance mode after a charge and monitors the battery.
You can leave the battery in the charger and plugged in indefinitely.
I leave my Ryobi batteries plugged whether I'm supposed to or not. Doesn't seem to hurt them.

Only "I" can? Who gave me this responsibility? I do not accept it, neither do I accept the responsibility of preventing forest fires.

Believe me, if you make a campfire to cook a hot dog during a total fire ban or try to fit pvc pipe together with an oxy torch you will be held responsible.

Both of those idiots caused major fires near my home. Property was destroyed and lives were lost. I leave it to your imagination what I’ll do to either of them if I find them.

Here’s why e-bike battery safety is so important. The bike wasn’t being charged or exposed to extreme heat, yet one of the battery cells went into thermal runaway, causing the entire bike and garage to catch fire.

This is a reminder of how critical it is to ensure that your e-bike’s battery meets proper safety standards. Certified batteries are designed to minimize these risks.

Please, always check if your e-bike’s battery is certified. The highest standard for e-bike battery safety is the UL 2271 certification. This label means the battery has passed rigorous safety tests for performance, overheating, and fire resistance.

My eBike Batterie Charger lies on a Concrete Floor while charging the Batteries. Concrete can act as a heat sink which should help. Office Door is open affording a clear view to the Bike. From listening what some suggested I will also put the Charger on a Timer. ---UC
Just wondering if a Heat sensitive cutout Switch attached to the Batterie would make sense ?

Yamaha chargers have a green light that shows the battery is charging. Once done the light goes off. raeding this thread leaves you wondering whether it trickles after that. It is UL certified.

But how was the bike ridden? That’s an eMTB. I imagine many emtb’ers ride pretty hard. Was this battery constantly run down to empty, turning the bike off? Was there many “high draw” events? Uphill, technical climbing at slow speed? What was the voltage of the battery when it was stored? Was there ever water intrusion due to the user washing the bike with a pressure washer? Of course it can be only on crappy cell to start the chain, which appears to be the case, but how was the bike treated?

These bikes were not being charged and had only been ridden gently, nothing like mountain biking. It was a step-thru bike called "Omega" and you can see the bike in the last few seconds of the video.
The owners were on vacation and, fortunately, caught this on their Google Nest and informed fire marshals.
This incident can be attributed to poor-quality BMS and cell selection.

Sounds like you have the inside scoop. I can’t see anything after the 1:00 mark. It’s all smoke and fire. Good thing they had Big Brother to let the owners know.

Charging your ebike battery is like frying bacon. Stay close.

You Need To Wear The Proper Gear If You Intend To Charge Your Battery At Home !!

Charge on the balcony if you live in a high rise building and never leave charging when you are not home.

Good ideas but not foolproof. An apartment building where my brother lives nearly burned down from an e-bike charging on a balcony.

As a result, e-bikes are not permitted anywhere in the buildings. My brother has to run an extension cord out his window and charge in the trunk of his car. He stores his bike on the balcony and keeps the battery in his car.
