The 4 greatest rock bands ever

Not necessarily the 4 best rock bans, but returning home from dentist, with a side trip to LBS to stock up on some consumables for the season, i heard a great 4 song set.

Started with Hotel California, followed by Lovers in a Dangerous Time, Copperhead Road and finally Boots and Hearts.

Smiling similarly to biking!

For my 15th birthday my parents bought me a ticket to Cal Jam1 in 1974, I went with 4 girls and was a show of a life time.
Rare Earth
Earth, Wind and Fire
The Eagles with Jackson Brown sitting in for Bernie Leadon and they also introduced Lind Ronstadt
Seals and Croft
Black Oak Arkansas
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
Emerson, Lake and Palmer

My nest concert was Led Zeppelin, I went to as many rock concerts as I could and saw almost all my favorites over my lifetime.

Sadly, I don’t remember much of the GD. Stones were great but too far away to see well. Jethro Tull was awesome both times. Don’t remember much of Johnny Winter but what I do remember was fantastic. Blue Oyster Cult was awesome in their day. Especially the 15 minute, crossed guitar version of Seven Screaming Dizbusters!
Big BOC fan here with Buck Dharma, Albert Bouchard, Eric Bloom, etc. Many great live performances to remember at the local venues. They usually headlined with Rush, Aerosmith, Manfred Mann, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Mr. Big, etc. One of my favorite albums by BOC was "Secret Treaties",The good ole days!

I think to this day, my greatest concert ever was my first. 1973 San Diego Sports Arena Deep Purple. The Burn album was released a little earlier and they played almost the entire album including my all time favorite DP tune

Oh yes, one of my 1st albums in my collection was "Machinehead" and also liked Richie Blackmore's releases.

Traditional Rock: The Who, Allman Brothers, Dire Straights, Van Halen
Progressive Rock: Pink Floyd, Yes, Moody Blues, Genesis (Peter Gabriel era, after that, they went pop-yuck)
Pink Floyd, Yes, and the Moody Blues would also be in my top 4.

Traditional Rock: The Who, Allman Brothers, Dire Straights, Van Halen
Progressive Rock: Pink Floyd, Yes, Moody Blues, Genesis (Peter Gabriel era, after that, they went pop-yuck)
Hard to argue with any of these choices.... we need a larger list of the top 10! 😉

I never could get enough of John Entwistle with the Who back in the day. Top of my list also.

I just found this thread today. These are all great bands that have been mentioned and like Stefan intimated there is room enough in music for everybody....it is that big. I could not make do with a list of only 4 . I can say that it was seeing Ringo on the Jack Paar show and then again on Ed Sullivan that made this 10 year old kid say " That looks like fun ...I need to do that!" After much begging , I got a 3 pc used set of crappy drums for my 11th birthday and have enjoyed playing for 55+ years. Thank you Beatles, (and Mom and Dad).

@Stefan Mikes already mentioned the Velvet Underground (RIP Lou Reed, Stirling Morrison and Andy Warhol) - the Velvets influenced so many bands...

It's said that only a few people bought Velvet Underground records, but everyone that did formed a band and made music...
...the Velvet's legacy is obvious in bands such as:
  • The Strokes
  • Modern Lovers
  • The Pixies
  • Sonic Youth
  • REM
  • Talking Heads
No mention of David Bowie that I've seen - another pioneer.

If I had to pick 4 I'd say:
  1. The Velvet Underground
  2. David Bowie
  3. Queen
  4. Led Zeppelin
So hard to pick just 4...in the mix would be:
  • Creedence Clear Water Revival
  • Pink Floyd
  • Bruce Springsteen
  • Dire Straits
  • Deep Purple
  • Tom Petty
  • Doobie Brothers
  • Jimi Hendrix
  • MC5
  • Saints
  • ACDC
  • so may others...
cheers
Mike

Modern Lovers
The Modern Lovers, Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers is the American act I just LOVE. JoJo's sung English is so crisp! I wonder if it's just him or it is his Boston background or perhaps the Californian one?

This song was very popular among early British punk-rockers, and Sex Pistols played it at their rehearsals. Two chords! And what a song of the road!

This song made me standardize on Wranglers :D Truly! It is about me and my jeans!
