The 4 greatest rock bands ever

I will go with the 4 british bands that all grew up within a 50 mile radius of each other as the 4 greatest Rock Bands of all time, (Beatles, Stones, Who, LZ) but what about the 4 greatest American Rock bands?

Here's my 4

1.Eagles
2.CCR
3.Steely Dan
4. GD

Stones
Tom Petty
Los Lobos
Rory Gallagher
I was a huge Rory fan and I was gutted when he died. I think I wore out my vinyl copy of "Irish Tour".
"Too much Alcohol"
"Who's that coming"

There's a story about Hendrix commenting on Rory:
When Mike Douglas asked Jimi "What's it was like to be the best rock guitarist in the world?" Jimi responded "I don't know, you'll have to ask Rory Gallagher"

I will tell you what Randall, It's hard to leave out Tom Petty on any list. Underrated, awesome body of work, toured until the day he died and nailed Americana. But when I plug TP in for CCR we have the same issue. It's wonderful and refreshing that the Ebike guys and gals love music.

Can we also get a review on Blues Traveler. Always a toe tapper and when push comes to shove, they need to be in the conversation. I like their stuff, just don't know much about them. I'm sure a full throttle guy has some background!!

although short lived due to hearing loss . Hewy Lewis released just 21 songs of which 12 were top 10's and 3 were #1 Hits . Considering how short the time of this band was. All due to Hewy's hearing loss . It aint bad

Who gets this cultural reference?

  • The Grateful Dead and all the various incarnations, especially current Dead & Company (with John Mayer). I saw the various incarnations over the last 32 years about 300 times. John Mayer in particular has given a complete new face and young energy to the band and he can play.
  • Bruce Springsteen: the energy from this man on stage is a beast. I wish I had seen him earlier to really understand how his live music is so different from anything else.
  • Pink Floyd
  • Beatles

YES!!

"The Music ain't any competitive sport".
The greatest rock bands are these you love to listen to. The Stranglers, Buzzcocks, The Damned, Sex Pistols if only four.
I'd have to exclude the Sex Pistols because although I had my punk period they didn't put out enough material. Maybe a separate punk list.....

Very difficult to put all 4 in order but the first is easy for me.
1) The Stones
2) The Beatles
3) The Grateful Dead
4) The Doors
But that leaves out the Who and a bunch of others. About 25 years ago I would have had Zeppelin in there.
