Commemorated my 66th birthday today with a ride on Historic Route 66. Rode for Lincoln, IL to Bloomington, IL. This is riding the prairie! Constitution Trail to the left, then Historic 66 in the middle, and Interstate 55 to the far right. Pavement for as long as you can see!

On an island in the SW Pacific...

Hyde : Otago Central Rail Trail, South Island, New Zealand ...
  • 151 km rail trail in NZ's South Island.
  • 45 degrees south = cool summers; cold winters.
  • Usually travelled west to east (think Roaring Forties winds).
  • Ebike hire available.
  • Hyde’s Otago Central Hotel (beyond old rail bridge in photo) is one of many places where the trail (foreground) crosses rural roads - most being ideal for a cafe stop; some with accommodation.

Today was the first truly cool and crisp fall day...high clouds 45-50 (7-10 C) degrees and dry. A good day for a long ride - 47 miles. This shot was taken on the east shore of the Lummi peninsula, looking east to Bellingham and Mt. Baker.

One of the most bizarre places I've ridden a bike is the Pike 2 Bike trail near Breezewood, PA. It is a 9 mile stretch of interstate highway abandoned in 1968 by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. The trail passes through the 2532' Rays Hill and 6782' Sideling Hill tunnels which are (for me anyway) the highlights of the trail. You experience absolute total darkness when you switch off your light in the center of the Sideling Hill Tunnel!

Unfortunately, the tunnel walls are covered with graffiti. I made an attempt to edit out the offensive stuff in my pictures.

It has been 50 years now since the highway was abandoned and it is interesting to see how mother nature is slowly recovering her own.

Despite it's desolate look, the trail is visited by more than a thousand cyclists each year. Anyone interested should check out the website:
