Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

Didn’t go out for a ride today. Mixture of rain and very cold winds. Presently, the wind is 22mph, but with gusts up to 45mph.
Me too but for a very different reason. I forgot to pack my winter cycling boots in the car before I left my sister’s home in Calgary on Friday over 100km away. My brother-in-law has come to the rescue and will drive the distance to deliver them in person today. 👍I promised to treat him to lunch when he arrives and follow up by cleaning the drive train on his bike.

Got Mt hood from two different angles about 15 miles apart.

Me either. Had no clear target for a ride and felt rather poor so I overslept the Sunday.
I believe I had your target - ON MY BACK. We did a very long uphill on a road that's being reconstructed S L O W L Y. Been more than a year and so the bike lane for the uphill was absent. I love the sound of cars revving to pass the slow crazy bicyclist blocking traffic.

I see SUN in the background. And the forecast for tomorrow is dampish.

But the rest of the week is suppose to be good.
North Whidbey often has a nice clear "hole" of dry air sitting over it while the surrounding areas are getting wet - hoping that happens tomorrow! If not, there are a few additional decent (for February) days forecast, as you pointed out 😊. I'm getting nervous because I'll be heading back to the Flow in a few weeks, and I haven't had one really decent ride on the La Free since we returned here in December! The weather has been cooler than normal so far this winter 😞.

On the bright side, since it was a Sunday you probably didn't have to deal with the flagger through the construction zones.

BTW, my wife had a close encounter with an eagle in your neck of the woods this week. She was driving up from UD to NG and spotted a eagle being harassed by a pair of crows. The baldy dove down to car height and flew through traffic straight at my wife then up and over her car in its attempt to shake the crows!

Online Food Delivery / E-Bikes (Warsaw)

Good morning! There's something I wanted to tell you before. My Saturday's trip to Warsaw occurred during bad weather (strong wind, some raining). No wonder there were no cyclists on Warsaw's bike paths whatsoever! The only people I could meet there were share e-scooter riders and... food delivery guys, on e-bikes!

Online food deliveries have only become popular in Poland since the beginning of the pandemics. With restaurants closed, the businesses survived thanks to take-away offers. Many online food delivery services have been created since. And the couriers found out they were more competitive if they rode e-bikes.

Riding my lightweight (and slow) Vado SL, I followed the first e-bike courier, and was surprised how fast and effortlessly he could ride even if he was actually pedalling! I put more effort in my own pedalling to watch his e-bike from a closer distance. Nice surprise. No brand on the frame, nicely integrated battery, apparently a 250 W rear hub-drive motor, and elegant display integrated with the stem. Later, I could spot more and more couriers riding similar e-bikes. Yes, there were some food couriers riding traditional bikes (they looked rather miserably).

The Times, They Are A-Changin'... Only a year and a half ago, a Warsaw courier was riding a rubbish throttle operated e-bike, if he/she rode e-bike at all...

yes, ebike couriers have exploded in England and the television is full of adverts for fast food delivery companies, they have branded outfits, sometimes branded ebikes, though most seem to be the type you describe.

It us amusing that there's been a decade long push to improve the countries eating habits, vilifying fast food, and now its completely 180'd with fast food being described as delicious and filling with no effort to promote healthier foods or even any pushback from government health officials.

Anyway, I bought a lovely cake.

In response to the posts about struggling to get out, I too have developed a slight malaise and Im blaming it on work , weather and the grandchild, whereas it really seems to be a lack of enthusiasm that I cant put my finger on.
Im even completely un enthused about my trip to Madeira.

I'll get through it

Actually, ran into the flagger (spell check does not like flagger and suggested FLOGGER!) during the summer and she suggested that it would not be a good idea to use that route and she directed us up Simonds Hill (one mother of a hill) where years ago I hit 47 down the other side when I did not need an e-bike. But once down the other side, it was a mess of strip commercial with lots of traffic, driveways and right turns in and out. Also speed down that back side is no longer possible as there were a ton a asphalt patches and other defects.

It is amazing that those "little" crows can intimidate a bald eagle but I've seen it.

In the states we call that malaise you are feeling " February" ...

Ride out today as Mrs DG at work, but cut short as developed a headache during the ride, perhaps temperature related.

Weather was bright to start, but it started to rain on the way back Temperature was about 7oC but with wind chill around 4oC. So not as cold as of late and the wind wasn’t as hard as it has been, but still felt cold though.

Found a new churchyard to stop for lunch; St. Swithun’s in Swanbourne.

On the way back came across some road kill, saw the car clip the Cock Pheasant, so it was still warm when I picked it up. Checked it over and it is now hanging in my shed, so ill leave it there for a week or so, then butcher it.

Do you clean it first or just hang it up? Just curious why you would not clean and refrigerate asap?
