Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

I'm pretty sure they are sucking smoke today. It isn't the best time of the year for a cross country ride with high mileage days. On day one, they rode from Anacortes to Winthrop and probably ate smoke on that day too. There are fires burning in that area also.
Anacortes to Winthrop is an insanely long day (150 miles, 7500+ feet of elevation gain), even supported and even on an e-bike. Even reasonably split into two days it wouldn't exactly be easy. Most self-supporting touring cyclists take at least three days.

Just before the highway closed yesterday I noticed several support vans bringing cyclists past where the highway was to be closed due to an active fire.

These must be hard core because I thought it crazy to go from Winthrop to Grand Coulee via the Loup and Disautel Passes. That guy in the trike contraption was miserable.

🎶 A chopping we will go, a chopping we will go, high ho the dairio, a chopping we will go!🎶
Have saw will travel, it is funny how handy this thing is on my travels.
Landscaping trucks give me the thumbs up when they pass me :)

Time for Supper, Stuffed Green Peppers with long grain wild rice; Mac & Cheese and Succotash. I might have some flaky biscuits too, haven't decided :) Bon Appetit my fellow ebr's

That is an electric chainsaw, no? How do you l like it? Will the battery handle several decent sized cuts? :)

I went in my local Stilh establishment for an pole pruner…back ordered…heard that before. I did get the Pro version of the e-chainsaw. This level shared battery and charger with the pole cutter Which will save $’s later. I like it, particularly with my recovering shoulder. Just used a short bit but it is great on fence line cedars.
My 18” is too much right now. It has Great power…haven’t reached the bottom of the charge yet.

Interesting ride, people wise, yesterday. I was riding 6 miles down to pay the electric bill. That way, I save stamp money. I kept seeing spandex clad road bicycle people heading the other way. That is a rare sight here.

I took the other road across the river to go back. I saw a strange contraption, a recumbent tricycle with an aerodynamic cover over it and lots of blinking lights turning into The Stampede Grounds. I couldn't resist so I turned in also.

It was a tour group--don't know which company, and they were riding to New Hampshire from our coast. This was day two. They weren't very talkative. They'd pedaled over one mountain pass in the morning and had another one to go over in the afternoon. And, temps were already in the 90s here in the valley. The guy in the tricycle seemed stuck and was finally able to get out when I left. That's gotta be hot in there.

Last night, another fire broke out and a town was evacuated to where the bike people were spending the night. I imagine it wasn't very restful.

When you live in a small town, these things are interesting.
Are you in Eastern WA? I know hwy 20 closed.

Years ago on standard bikes (g), we rode from Bow-Edison to Newhalem, then to Twisp. Then four more days to Newport, ID. We were supported. Did it third week of August. That last day was in the 90's and it was 94 miles, if I recall. I said if someone put a piece of paper on the road, it would probably stop me dead!!! Was I tired.

Yes. The last report was that 20 would be closed through the weekend. I think that Disautel Pass, from Omak to Nespelem is also closed because of fire. It's a nasty time.
Friends live full time in Mazama. I've got other full-timers in Winthrop. Met them via a friend when we did the Haute Route in Europe years ago.

Ash is falling in Mazama right now, and they are under Level 1 Evacuation Warnings. If I were your friends I'd be loading the car.

Perfect! I need a battery powered blower to clear the local bike lane I use!

As all went well at work on Tuesday -- and there's thunderstorm season with good weather mostly on workdays and during working hours -- I decided to grab some hours for riding my Bike for fitness. Meaning, low assistance and possibly a lot of pedalling. My smart route plan assumed I would be riding with tailwind in the open space and the return would have included the forest (as there is almost no wind in the woods).

Swapping the Specialized stem in my Vado SL for Redshift ShockStop completely disorganized my handlebar space. I rode to InPost parcel locker to collect a nice dual Garmin/GoPro mount. After some work under scorching sun (although it is not Baltimore MD, 29 C makes you sweat, too), my handlebars became neat again. I could ride again!

I cannot express how happy I am to have my Vado SL equipped with dual Redshift ShockStop suspension (suspension stem and seatpost) now. Since I used to own a premium FS e-MTB, I can tell you the impressions from riding both systems over similar terrain were -- comfort-wise -- very similar to each other. (True full suspension is only better because it ensures full traction in any terrain; the suspension stem & seatpost don't contribute to that).

In the bottom photo above, I was just thinking I would hit the "Palmiry Connecting Road", or the dreadful "cobblestone or sand/mud -- choose one" segment soon. And then I recollected I could take an MTB-grade trail for a detour. Which I did.

At the summit of the "Tiger Hill", Kampinos National Park.

I truly regret I didn't take a photo at the bottom of the climb. When I saw it, I thought "Nooo! You'll never going to make that on Vado SL!" The hill actually is a tall overgrown sand dune, with a lot of sand and tree-roots on the incline. I bravely pushed the "S" button to get into 180% assistance, 240 W Turbo mode, rapidly downshifted to the granny gear and attacked the hill. Suddenly, I spotted a single-track, made by hundreds of MTBers riding that part before, so I followed that trail. It was a miraculous ride. I felt I would stop somewhere on the incline, and was about to stand on the pedals but no: I just grabbed the bar-ends, pushed on the pedals very hard, and magically found myself at the summit. Now I can understand why many people prefer Turbo Levo SL to the full power Turbo Levo: the former is lightweight and so natural to ride!

I was approaching the place seen in the photo above very slowly: The summit was already conquered. Suddenly, I heard a loud CRACK! and my Bike stopped immediately (I didn't fall, fortunately). Got off the bike and found a stick between the front tyre and the fender. After removing the piece, the front wheel was emitting very unpleasant noise when I walked the bike. "What gets?" It was the front fender, slightly bent and rubbing the tyre. I could fix it easily with my hand. I continued my ride, and that was not very easy! All in all, that was an MTB trail :D

(Anyone who plans riding trails on Vado SL: choose the fenderless, or non-EQ version of the bike; add MTB removable fenders).

At the KPN Didactic Trail.

It was insane to get off-road after all those torrential rainfalls we had recently. The Didactic Trail leads through a morass. The walkways as seen in the photo were OK (although I had to carry The Bike onto each walkway and jump from the end of it). The issue was the walking paths were muddy and full of deep puddles not to be avoided. While riding through one of such puddles, the bike motor got covered with water (no worries, it is waterproof!) and my shoes got full of rainwater! :D Now, my Bike needs washing!

On the MTB trail.

I'm extremely happy with Redshift ShockStop products. I returned home smiling, and without typical post-ride aches (arms, neck, or lower back).

Moreton Island (third largest sand island in the world) can be seen on the extreme left (north). On our side is Moreton Bay and beyond the island is the Pacific, known here (27ºS) as the Coral Sea. South of 30ºS the Pacific Ocean between NZ and Australia is known as the Tasman Sea.

After Sundays epic ride my legs were still a little tired but it didn't stop me going out on another perfect cycling day! It was mostly roads I have cycled many times but I found a road I haven't ridden before and it was pretty awesome for the most part, some rough parts but nothing I couldn't handle! Some big climbs like this, which is much steeper than it appears!

Some big descents also, what goes up must come down! ;)

Not a bad view from the top!

My legs were fine by the end of the ride thankfully but I will rest them tomorrow which is going to be a gorgeous day, around 23C which is very hot for here!🤣 I had a fun ride once again, we have been really fortunate with the weather this month but I'm sure the winds and rain will return soon...
