Given the difficulties finding spare parts, why would a US buyer buy anything other than Bosch?

Yes, these things used to happen in the past:
  • Bad, really bad BLOKS display. Specialized offered free overhaul to the newer TCD-w. I got my 2017 Vado 5.0 upgraded to 2020 Vado 6.0 electronics, which included a $500 Supernova M99 Pro headlight, new rack, new horn, new handlebar remotes (including one for the horn), and the TCD-w. Free of charge.
  • Yes, Specialized greatly extended the warranty duration for replacement of faulty motors of the era (from 2 to 4 years)
  • Yes, Specialized were replacing e-bikes with broken frames with brand new e-bikes.
  • Yes, these pains are over now.
This is what I call "Specialized Warranty". Even in the worst times, Specialized were always backing their customers. These bad times have been over for a long while. Now, there is a new system called Mastermind, and Mastermind Turbo e-bikes have been available since September 2021.

Where is the Bosch Smart System? When will the Bosch Smart System implement dual battery and Rohloff? Eh?
it will be out when its out. or should it go out then need replacement parts like your above example?

Steve: Ask me why I standardised on two Specialized e-bikes. (I used to own more e-bikes).
Perhaps because none of them ever broke?

How comes I own as many as 3 Vado batteries and 3 SL Range Extenders? Because I could buy them? And poor Dallant was waiting for a year to get his spare Bosch battery.

What makes you blame Bosch? If you have any knowledge of supplier-OEM relationships, you know these things take both parties. If no one is selling dual battery yet with Rohloff integration, talk to the bike mfgrs themselves as well as Bosch.
Cobi.bike and Smartphone hub? Much as I hate mine, I realize that Trek is more of the problem than Bosch. After all, Trek chose to use the system on certain bikes instead of something more functional, and continue to do so this model year, just like R&M and others who offer it. (no doubt because of favorable pricing from Bosch. )

So talk to the product managers at your favorite brands about Smart System, not Bosch.

Hey RetiredNH: Does the Nyon 21 navigate in the United States?

"why would a US buyer buy anything other than Bosch?"

Because Nyon 21 cannot navigate in the United States?

and Yet I have three different brand bikes that all share the same batteries and get this the same display I can pop the nyon off one bike and put it on the other with no settings change. you
ur are limited to one brand of bike with limited models Bosch is in hundreds of bike brands. From cargo bikes to tandems and everything in between.

Just saying: my next bike is an acoustic bike.

That comes down to two things. (1) for some trips and tours I'd like to do, an e-bike (any e-bike) just isn't appropriate technology. (2) My 2017/2018 dual-battery Charger GX Rohloff is still a great bike, and nothing I've seen from any manufacturer has motivated me to upgrade.

What it would take to motivate me to upgrade: batteries with much higher power densities, e.g. if 1000wh power packs became widely available in the same form factor as today's 500wh-600hw power packs. Or a substantially lighter bike with the same performance and capabilities.

I was trying to fancy me buying a Bosch e-bike. I was close. A Cannondale Topstone Neo Carbon Lefty 3 it was. Then I looked into the specs:
  • Purion display
Oh no, thank you. I needed not only a gravel e-bike. I needed connectivity.

Like I said...did Bosch choose the cheapest display? As I learn more about OEM (Trek et al) choices, the more irritated I get. It's the OEM that saddle us with these crappy products. I do fault Bosch for their abysmal cobi.bike app, which causes me endless grief (navigation and now data problems) but Trek chose it....

Honestly none of the e-bike display systems are as good as any Garmin or Wahoo.

And for turn-by-turn navigation none of those are as good as phone apps like Ride With GPS. And before anybody says anything, you can download the route and maps to your phone and run navigation in Airplane Mode and it works fine. If battery life is an issue you spend $20 for a small power bank and you are good for the day.

No Bosch display is good. No Bosch display has ANT+.
It is Bosch that makes the crappy display as Purion. A generic Chinese display on one of my e-bikes presents more information.
And their funny choice of Komoot. Why not Strava.

That's why ANT+ e-bike integration is so important. Currently, only Specialized and Giant offer ANT+ in their e-bikes.

Prove your Nyon connects to your Garmin.
Export from Nyon to Strava.

Shimano, Brose, Yamaha, and all the miscellaneous third party manufacturers are a huge pain to get replacement parts for in the event of motor failure, to the extent that your bike may be a brick. I have read countless stories of this over the years.

Given that, why would a US buyer get any bike other than Bosch? They seem to be the top manufacturer for after-sale support.

My bike with a Yamaha motor was effectively disabled for several months while I had to source a $15 cable from Europe. I said to myself, the next eBike I get had better have a good after-sale support system in place.
I have been very pleased with my 5 Bafangs. (4 hub and 1 mid)

Knock on wood, none have broken yet...

Agreed. Reminds me of built in auto navi vs android auto. Guess which is winning?

Wish there's be an open source movement where we ebike owners could pick the display we wanted, not locked into the few choices mfgrs support.

That will never happen it does not happen in cars either.

True, except that we do have a choice of navi (with built in display) in cars, don't we? Built it, apple carplay and android auto with google maps. That's far better than we have with bikes. Not like years past where we needed a separate cell phone mount in our car for decent navigation. And with ebikes, who has room for a separate display on their handlebar anyway?
