Cadence monitoring on android phone via Bluetooth, not ANT+?

My 12th wildest dream: To buy a cheap crank-mounted Bluetooth cadence sensor and see my cadence in real time on my Samsung Note20 Ultra Android phone -- which turns out NOT to have native ANT+ support.

Can this dream come true? Adding a bike computer to my handlebar is out. An external ANT+ dongle is also out. It's the phone by itself or nothing.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

sure! most cycling related electronics are actually bluetooth and ANT+ these days. here's an example

i use a 4iiii crank based cadence and power sensor for virtually all my road bike rides, connected directly to my iPhone via bluetooth using the "cadence" cycling app, which is fantastic.

Thanks! I'll look into all of that.

Addendum: The Wahoo app for Android gets really mixed reviews. Is that the "cadence" app you're referring to?

no, cadence is a standalone / separate app. i’ve used it with various devices and data sources and it seems to be robust. i’d guess there’s an android version, and if not, something similar.

For Ant+ on my Samsung Galaxy S22 I had to install the Ant+ Radio Service from either the Samsung Galaxy Store or Google Play store. Back in my S5 and S8 days the same service needed to be installed and worked fine.

Is the service not available for your Note 20?

Good luck.

Thanks, Peter! The phone apparently lacks the underlying ANT+ firmware -- despite being Samsung's flagship when I bought it, way back in 2020. I gather that without the firmware, the radio service does you no good.

According to some internet sources, the Note20's not the only recent Samsung phone without ANT+ firmware.

Interesting.

On the S22, some software I use has a plugin to use Ant+. To activate it I was directed to download and install the service. I did so without any errors or warnings. Seems when I come to use the Ant+ plugin I'm in for a surprise! Worked well on the previous Galaxy mobiles.

I wonder if Samsung dropped its Ant+ support because it's a Garmin proprietary product.

As mentioned above, increasingly sensor devices transmit in both BLE and Ant+. So no big deal for me.

Cheers
