2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Ooh dat hill, well Ive been out on it and it climbs really well, only 80nm, but just keeps going, the 4.8 tyres just glide over soft sand, 3 hours of mostly high power setting , climbing stupidly steep dunes and riding the entire beach and back, still got 30% left.
Its a lot noiser than the bbshd and needs lower gears, but it gets there.

The alongside the tram line climb would be no problem at all, my god my thighs are groaning after constant pedalling.😂

The display says 15.5 cutout, but it feels more like 18-19mph , the tyres are much higher profile, I wouldnt want anymore speed, its more than enough.

Nicely done sir!

I rode 16 miles on the roads near our house with my wife today. We rode to Tennessee Illinois, population 99 and back. A picture of a train, there is a busy railroad in our area, the big post office in Tennessee, and crop dusters are hitting it hard and heavy lately.

I had yesterday all planned out with a nice forecast all day, a nice walk in the morning and a 50 miler on the bike in the afternoon! It was a blustery day but nothing more than 30mph, I went for my walk at Beecraigs Loch in the morning and the weather was really nice!

On my way home the weather took a turn for the worse with rain starting to fall, I thought it was maybe a passing shower and it would be gone in no time with the strong breeze blowing! I arrived home and sure enough the sky was looking much better, I had my lunch and the next thing I could hear rain bouncing off my windows! It was properly chucking it down, I had another look at the forecast and it was showing less than 5% chance of rain... I was resigned to staying indoors as the weather had really closed in and it didn't look like it would clear anytime soon!

Fast forward to later in the evening and the sky was looking much better, there were some nasty clouds hanging around but it looked way better so at 6pm I decided to go for it! What a great decision that was, I had a fantastic ride into the evening!:D It was still windy and directly from the south so I headed south for Carluke directly into the wind, using the back roads as much as possible! I had most of the roads pretty much to myself and what a joy it was, I continued out to Braehead where I turned NE and had the wind right at my back for more than 10 miles!

I decided to go through Auchengray again and enjoy the descent down to Woolfords, I did the same descent on Monday and hit 44.8mph so I thought 50mph might be possible with the strong southerly wind at my back! I started down the descent and was building speed rapidly when I got hit with a crosswind from nowhere, that made me wind things in and slow down although I still hit 43.4mph!😂 The descent is quickly followed by a climb before the road drops away again, I was nudging 40mph all the way down!

The road eventually joins the main A71 where I turned east for West Calder to take the back road through Stoneywood and then turned north for Longridge, a big old climb followed by another awesome descent down through Whitburn with the wind right at my back all the way down! I then joined the cycle path up to Armadale before turning west on the back road to Blackridge! From there it was a straight road home and I arrived home totally dry and totally buzzing after a truly awesome evening ride!😁I didn't have time for photos this time...

RabH, 55 miles really? Slacker, I didn’t think you got on the bike for less than a 100 miles. :D Nice ride as always!

My wife and I went 15 miles today. I’ve got her riding pretty regular with me lately. It was near perfect weather, 72 degrees and a near calm day. Since I’ve gotten my e bike I estimate I’ve gone for about 300 rides. I believe this is only the third time I’ve gone with the wind near zero.

My 'short' Sunday ride from last week:
Screenshot_20240720-080218.png

Told my wife I would take a short ride after church instead of heading straight home. I've been commuting at higher assist and higher speeds, so wanted to take a ride with more me and a little less assist even though my motor is definitely a little louder and has more drag than it did in its younger days.

Planned on about 30 miles, but did almost 45 with 4200ft of climbing. My bike thought I had 11 miles left on the battery when I was still 13 miles(+1000 ft of climbing) from home, so I was happy to make it back with still 6 or 7 miles of juice left.

Not much in the way of pictures - a few skeletons, stopped at Lunds Gulch, rode part way down Big Gulch trail and luckily chose the trail up that didn't have steep stairs. Spent several minutes trying to get a photo of the Anna's hummingbird that was catching flies along the trail -almost impossible in the dappled sunlight on the trail.

A rare Sunday with decent weather so I just had to get out, with rain forecast for the afternoon I went for an early one! I set off at 6.45am with very light winds but a rather chilly 10C for this time of year, not that I was complaining as I love the cold! ;) I headed NE and used the local cycle paths from Plains to Caldercruix, some of the locals looked like they had a rough Saturday night...😂

1721575903019.jpeg

Hillend Loch was very calm at this time of the morning and the geese were enjoying it!

1721575988634.jpeg

1721576002912.jpeg

1721576015117.jpeg

After departing the cycle path I turned north towards Limerigg and down the big descent into Slamannan, then out to Shiedhill where I hurtled down the big descent into Glenn Village at high speed!

1721576204990.jpeg

42.6mph down the final descent, imagine how fast I would go down this if they fixed the road...😂

1721576269464.jpeg

After passing through the village I enjoyed the final descent down into Falkirk, almost 38mph and the speed limit is 30 oops! 😂At this early hour on a Sunday it was deserted... I then turned east passing through Laurieston and Polmont and on towards Linlithgow, stopping for this photo before arriving in the town!

1721576491836.jpeg

It can be a very busy town but early on a Sunday it was very quiet, just the way I like it! I continued east all the way out to Threemiletown where I turned north through Old Philpstoun and then east through Newton! Just after Newton I stopped for this photo of the bridges over the Forth!

1721576702101.jpeg

For once the western path over the bridge was open so I got some decent photos of the new bridge!

1721576789779.jpeg

1721576803475.jpeg

After crossing I stopped for photos from down below the bridge!

1721576868727.jpeg

1721576882177.jpeg

I was just about to set off when I spotted an Aircraft Carrier berthed near the Rosyth docks!

1721576946735.jpeg

Then it was time to turn west to head for home through Rosyth where I stopped for this photo, its pretty industrial around here but this little stream always looks immaculate!

1721577037168.jpeg

As I left Rosyth I decided to head down into Limekilns on the coast road to see if I could get a side view of the carrier! It was a little far away for my phone cmaera but still...

1721577192406.jpeg

All the boats were left high and dry at this time of the day!

1721577260387.jpeg

I then headed along the coast into Charlestown where I came across a short sharp cobbled climb, it felt like I was in Belgium for a short time! 😂 The road then heads inland and joins the main road into Crombie, I stopped for this photo with the oil refinery at Grangemouth way in the distance!

1721577494669.jpeg

I then passed through Crombie and joined the coast road again at Torryburn, passing through all the quaint villages on my way to the Kincardine Bridge! Its such a great road for the bike!

1721577634354.jpeg

At the end of the road I joined the cycle path that leads to the Kincardine Bridge, as I joined the bridge I felt a big gust of wind in my face! The forecast was showing the wind strengthening as the day progressed and they weren't wrong, it was brutal at times and I was straight into the headwind pretty much all the way home! I was very glad I got 52 miles from my first battery so I had plenty juice left for the remaining 34 miles! With a good amount of it being uphill I was counting my blessings!;)

From the bridge I used the cycle path towards Skinflats and Grangemouth but I turned west to go through Carronshore in the hope of seeing the young Clydesdale horse I have pictured a couple of times now! Sadly there was no sign of it today, possbly moved to another pasture! From Carronshore I headed south towards Camelon where I turned west for Bonnybridge and passed over the canal in the centre of town!

1721579961630.jpeg

1721579978460.jpeg

1721579990996.jpeg

My plan was to take the back road up to Falkirk which would be a big climb but I would have the wind at my back for a few miles at the top of the climb, it was a great decision and gave me a nice break from that wind! Its also a great road for the bike!

1721580317164.jpeg

The view to the north with the Ochil Hills in the background, no sun lighting them up today! It was actually pretty overcast all day but not a drop of rain so no complaints from me!

1721580402017.jpeg

Once in Falkirk I knew I had more big climbs coming but I would have some shelter from the wind up the climbs thankfully! I then enjoyed the descent down into Slamannan and headed for the back road to Longriggend, its a very narrow road but with little to no traffic it has always been a favourite of mine! The downside was the wind though, its treelined for a good part but it was acting like a wind tunnel today!😂 In the distance I could see some cyclists and I was catching them quickly, as I turned on to the road to Longriggend they were just in front of me but not for long as I zoomed past! There were around 10 of them, half of them lady riders and they were struggling into that wind!

The road is flattish at first but starts to rise sharply around a tight bend and as soon as you round the corner it was like riding into a gale, I bet they were cursing me when they hit that wall of wind!😂 I was cruising along in level 2 assist, have I said I love this bike before? :D At Longriggend I decided to head down the descent into Upperton to avoid the crosswind down the road to Caldercruix, its a fun descent and a good part of it is protected from the wind! I then joined the main road into Greengairs with just over 80 miles covered and turned south for home over the back roads! I had a crosswind at times but it wasn't too bad, a short time later I arrived home and although I was very tired I was buzzing after another excellent day on the bike!👍This was ride no 49 of the year, it doesn't sound like much but my average is over 77 miles!

Rise and Shine 🌞

The oppressive heat hasn’t prevented us from our daily rides and early morning outings are generally the coolest time to be out. A very comfortable 16C by the time we left the house this morning at 8am.

We spotted this woman whizzing by on her Creo last week and immediately gave her the thumbs up.👍

A few days later she showed up again but riding a different Spec bike. Looked more like a vintage model with pedal cages.

Condensed DH Run 1 (Family Guy)

I hit the trails yesterday with the boys on Moose Mountain just outside of Bragg Creek, AB. There was a minimal amount of climbing as we had vehicle shuttles hence most of the hard work was done for us. Nevertheless, the few ascents that remained were brutal made worse by the sweltering heat. Family Guy is a sweet mellow singletrack that winds through spruce and pine forests. No time to stop and take in the views along this fabulous trail that was bench cut by hand as there were plenty of other riders taking advantage of the optimal ground conditions. There is a mix of vegetation including lots of open meadows, where we were treated to abundant wild flowers and great views of the valley below and mountains beyond. Sublime.
