Hi All,
I’m pretty new to eMTBs and I just put a refundable deposit on a 2022 POWERFLY 4 US MED 29 LITHIUM GREY/TREK (Hardtail) and added the following accessories Rack Trek Powerfly Black Rear Mount 2020, Fender Trek Powerfly 29 2020 Black Front, Fender Trek Powerfly 29 2020 Black Rear, LIGHT SUPERNOVA E3 TAIL LIGHT 2 BLACK REAR, LIGHT SUPERNOVA E3 MINI FRONT, Bontrager Kickstand, for a total of CAD $5,386.93 (including tax)/USD ~$4,268.25. I’m very excited about this eMTB but wanted to check with some experienced riders, for that price is there another brand/models (Giant, Specialized, Canonndale even if I had to pay up a bit more) that you would recommend? I’m a beginner rider but hope to improve to a decent skill level....

Also I would appreciate any thoughts or advice and let me know if I need all of those accessories (like the kickstand…:)

Thanks!
HMA

That’s a great all-mountain hard tail. Consider opting for the FS (fully-suspended) version if you can. A friend of mine has the PF4 (2020 FS model I think) and she absolutely loves it and rides it everywhere not only as a daily commuter but she’s also ridden it on both double and single tracks and it has seen her through some pretty gnarly trails. Other than a FS MTB, The PF 4 maybe all that you require depending on the terrain that you plan to ride on. 29” wheels will allow you to roll over just about anything and carry speed through. The kickstand is a convenient accessory but it won’t do you any favors on more technical trails. It all comes down to how and where you ride.

You might want to check out Trek’s Rail line for FS bikes if you are looking at a super capable machine and plan on heading out on more challenging trails as your skill set improves. @Dallant also rides a Rail 5 and can probably provide valued input on that specific model. A family member who is just getting back into the MTB scene recently took delivery of his new Rail and I’ve been trying to convince him to join me on some of our local trails.

Be sure to check out the MTB forum as there are other members who can probably offer you more sage advice than yours truly.

BTW, welcome to the site! :)

Thanks for the warm welcome and appreciate the advice. Totally agree on the FS comment. I had inquired about the FS PW4 but I think supply issues were preventing me from exploring it further. If you or anyone has any leads in the Vancouver or Calgary area let me know.
Thanks,
Hafiz

Glad to help out a fellow Canuck. Where are you located? Supply is definitely an issue and will continue to be for some time. A family member is also on the lookout for a e-road bike for his spouse but so far has come up empty handed. Just be thankful that you were able to get your mitts on a pretty decent ride! 👍

A buddy and I are planning to ride West Bragg Creek this Wednesday. Two of the looped trails on the top of our list are Pistolero and Loamzilla, blue and black diamond DH runs. Should be interesting as neither one of us has ridden these before.

I ride a Giant Trance X E Pro 29 (2) and have thoroughly enjoyed shredding our local trails with it. I feel that the time is right to step it up and explore beyond what is offered here and what the bike is truly capable of.

I’d certainly recommend the Rail 5. As a old, arthritic beginner myself it’s more EMTB than I’ll probably ever need but I’m certainly loving it and the FS! It was totally dumb luck that I found mine online on a major sports store chain, Scheels. It was one of two in their nationwide system at the time. Best of luck!

With a rack and fenders it sounds like you will be using it for commuting. Yes to the kickstand lights and fenders. You might want to add a suspension seat post. I have been daily commuting with a 2017 power fly 5 hard tail for three years.

If you are serious about mountain biking a full suspension would be better.

It is a solid bike with an upright riding position for pedaling around town. It is very stable at 60 km downhill on roads with smooth tires like the Schwalbe Supermoto.

I too have supernova lights with the highbeam switch and cannot Imagine getting another bike without it.

Pictures of the bike are in my post history. Enjoy your new bike.

Hafiz, my 2018 Powerfly 4 Hardtail is a joy to ride.

I've set it up with a Cane Creek Thudbuster seat post, pannier rack, handlebar bag and kickstand. For gravel roads and rough rail trails, this arrangement is fine.

The sole problem that I've encountered relates to my Powerfly 4's narrow rims. According to the Australian Trek website:
  • 2022 Powerfly HT 4 : 20 mm rims
  • 2022 Powerfly FS 4 : 35 mm rims
Major difference!

Hopefully, other EBR Forum members will comment on the ease/difficulty of removing/fitting MTB tyres on narrow rims. I'll summarise my experience in a single word: impossible!

Hi HMA,

have you received your Powerfly4?
I just ordered one for me and one for my wife with ETA in March and April 2022.
But Trek told us that they might arrive earlier.

cordially

Bruno

Hi Bruno,

I actually switched my purchase to a Giant TRANCE X E+ PRO 29 3, I wanted to future proof just in case so went for the FS rather than hardtail. It arrives in the spring.
I'm sure you will love the PF 4- all the reviews have been great.

Best,
HMA

Welcome HMAiii,

Bottom like I'd buy the 2022 POWERFLY 4 US MED 29 LITHIUM GREY/TREK in a second !! That's not to say what Giant, Specialized and Canonndale
have to offer is subpar, quit the opposite. They all make fine bikes.

It seems like you're very pleased with what Trek has to offer because you've made a financial commitment. I think you've made an excellent choice.
I'm biased though...I own two Trek eBikes : ) One is an 2017 Powerfly7 Hardtail. I absolutely love it. It is my go to bike and
your choice is even better. Tons of torque. Your bike has more.

My riding style is primarily Rail to Trails and back roads, no single track, no 'real' mountain biking thus I have no experience with full suspension,
but honestly if I were to do it all over again I might consider FS. I've had zero problems with my Powerfly7. I'm approaching 5000miles /8046km
Trek has great after sale support. I must say even after 4 years, it's like the first day when I ride.

Truthfully, I envious in a good way. I think you've chosen the perfect bike !

Good luck,
John

Hi John, I think you make some fair comments and hence I've cancelled my deposit on the PF 4 and just purchased a Giant TRANCE X E+ PRO 29 3 (2022) with delivery in the spring. It's FS so just case I get the bug I don't have go through this again and I "think" the resale value will hold. Thanks for your response and happy riding.

HMA

Hello,

Wow ! I must say I'm surprised to hear you've cancelled your Trek PF4 . Don't get me wrong, the Giant TRANCE XE+pro is a stunning bike.
If I may ask what caused your change. The FS of the Giant ?

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

2 main factors; first I got a smoking deal on the Giant Trance X E+ Pro 3, second The Trek PF 4 didn’t have FS so I thought i might be missing out. FOMO!

Howdy,
Makes complete sense to me. As I said earlier, in my view you chose 4 top e-bike companies. No 'bad' bikes from
any of them. Please check back in when you receive your bike and have gone of a few rides.

All the best,
John
