Beautiful ride day on beautiful Whidbey Island! 13 miles - slowly extending my range 😉.

Probably the last ride of the year, with a day and a half of rain and freezing rain predicted now. But this morning was sunny and 30 degrees, and I haven't had the bike out in almost a month with the giant snowstorm and subsequent weird weather, so off for a very pleasant, if short, 16 miles around town.

IMG_3370.jpeg

So the ordinary photo from the ride is sort of a statement... year ending, but we'll be back in business asap, maybe late in the week if the weather predictions hold. A very low 2393 miles for the year this time, quite off my usual 3000, but I had the hardest time keeping my mojo going this Fall, and then winter arrived hard and very early.

Today’s ride was definitely my last ride for this year :D
I have never ridden a bicycle on New Year’s Eve so I thought I just had to today as the sun was shining and temperatures were above freezing.
Started at 13.30 and returned 15.15. Did 30km (19miles) so it was a relaxed ride. 4°C ( 39°F) when I started and 2°C (35-36°F) getting home. Toes and fingers a little cold at the end but really nice being out on the bike.

What a beautiful place to ride - even in the cold!

First ride of 2020 and another 50 miler, now 8 in a row :D I'm really enjoying these 50 mile trips recently, its enough to get a good workout and I know I will be fit for work the next day ;) Today was rather overcast and a bit windy but it remained dry so it was a fun ride! Being the 1st January there was very little traffic on the roads so that made it so much more enjoyable :) The only downer was a guy that thought it was a good idea to walk in the middle of the road on a steep downhill, I was just building up speed when I noticed him...he started to move to his left so I moved to my left which was the correct side but then he decided to move right for some strange reason so I went for the brakes but thankfully he had the sense to move back left again and a catastrophe was avoided  He did apologize and I accepted it with a word of caution about walking in the middle of the road! All's well that ends well:) Happy New Year everyone!

Wow, what a great looking place to ride! Pics # 6 and 7 are why I went with a ToughRoad instead of a Road E, but any of these things are great bikes. And how in the world do you keep that bike so clean?

Looks like quite an attention getter at mile 21 or so there. How did your range end up for this ride?

Alright, so off we go again! Temps on the right side of freezing today on Jan 1, so a short one down along the Erie Canal and the Hudson River on the bike paths. A drab day at first, but nice to get out of the gate right away for the new year. No snow forecast in the next week so maybe I can get a few rides in. Some rain expected, though.

Things a little quiet at Erie Canal Lock 6 today. This is a mile from my house. I ride the flight of six locks down to the Hudson several times a week when heading out on rides in that direction. That’s Flight Lock Road swooping up along the right side of the picture, follows the canal up over that hill to where it meets the Mohawk River on the other side.

Looks can be deceiving, it certainly wasn't clean ;) The mudguards do a great job! The Road E just eats up those big climbs with ease, I recently lowered all of my settings which means range is never really a problem! The last 30 miles were in to a stiff headwind though which did eat up the battery but I always manage to keep enough in reserve for the last climbs home!

final ride of year started with a gentle snowfall but turned into quite the blizzard before finishing, oh well, the Kootenay Ale tasted all that much better when eyelids thawed out, great week riding in the Canadian Purcell mountains in south eastern British Columbia, didn't see another biker but sure covered some inspiring ground, all the best for a great e-biking year in 2020 to all

My 9th consecutive 50 miler today in murky conditions, pretty windy also but another enjoyable trip! 53 miles today so 103 already for 2020, I'm grabbing every chance I get before our weather turns nasty...we have some stormy weather coming early next week but it should only last a few days! Tomorrow is looking a bit windy and overcast with some rain possible but I should manage another 50 miler, its going to be 9C which is very mild for this time of year!

I woke to rain today and the wind was very strong and gusty once again so I decided to wait a while and see how it developed, thankfully it paid off and I managed my 10th consecutive 50 miler:D 50 exactly today, my legs (and my battery) just had enough left to complete the 50! The first 30 miles were into the gusty wind and it wasn't exactly flat so I was very glad when I eventually had that wind behind me for the last 20 miles! Luckily the rain stayed away for the most part and the strong winds helped to dry some of the roads which was more than welcome:) I feel blessed to have 3 rides in the bag already this year and its only January 5th, 153 miles at an average of 51, not a bad start to 2020!

Success! On the far side of the creek, looking back. The dark part of the water (if you look straight across) is very deep, even for a car. It is generally trucks that will use this road, and horses (fairly recently, too, judging by the fresh imprint of shod hooves on the road). My route was to hug the embankment to the right where the creek bed was shallow until I reached a shoal (out of view of this shot) and work my way across. Having a carbon belt drive meant I wasn't worried about a chain or derailleur getting wet.
@Readytoride, I enjoy your pics. I grew up in Great Falls, lived in Leesburg before moving to FL in 2009, and once lived in Purcellville. I do miss the beautiful country...

When I was a small kid there was a ford (creek crossing) in Sterling, VA, and sometimes I could get my father to detour through it on the way to McDonald’s. Very was cool to see the one you posted...

The old Towpath along the Erie Canal makes for a great casual ride, and you can go for forever, 360' miles worth. I'm near it also except opposite end of State. I do the paths around Tonawanda where the canal enters Niagara River and then Lake Erie and then up to Lockport and beyond. Have a Rails-to-Trails path near the house and that ties into canal path. One of my favorite pedals during warmer months.

I will say I envy your proximity to the ADK North Country.

no too many places for me to ride that are cool as I am in the middle of the city. but I finally head out on this really long path and t had some interesting views. it had been raining off and on most of the day though most of the ride was just sprinkles. about 42 degrees. palmball road what a strange name. but I also saw a touchdown lane.

Hey Bill, welcome to the club. I did the whole thing in the Fall of 2017 on my Trek XM700 that I had at the time, it was a great trip. Maybe we’ll meet in the middle sometime.

Your end is really nice, from Tonawanda all the way out past Fairport, I’d say. And all the singletrack woods stuff in the middle of the state is pretty good, too. It really is a hell of a trip.
