Replace rear cassette with lower gears.

I want to replace the stock 8 speed Shimano cassette (11-32) with another 8 speed cassette with lower gears for climbing, possibly 40 Tooth or a bit more. What is the maximum rear cog my stock Shimano Acera derrailer could accept? Any suggestions on a Shimano replacement derailleur that would work?

The Acera won't do 40T. Sometimes you can use derailleur extender to make it work. Also the offerings are limited in 8 speed increments. Upgrading to a Microshift Advent groupset would yield a 9speed setup with 11-42T gearing.
