RadRunnerPlus - journal

I'm pretty sure that my garage used Tannus on both of my tires when he replaced the coloured 20x4s back to the original gravel tires on the RadRunner+.
He also used the slime that I gave to him to use. He asked me if he could try something new, something else to cover the entire interior of the tire, something that he is experimenting with. I will get the details of what he did and post it here. I think that he asked me if he could try a new method and he lined my tire with something that he thought of himself. More to come.

Most of the black bears I saw up around Comox were on trips to the dump and they were pretty bold and unafraid of people.

Tannus wouldn't have saved my bacon today (photo).

I almost fell over at the price of their breakfast yesterday, and I compared to another place in town and saw it was similar. Imagine between that and covid the restaurant business is a tough go.

Do the medical gloves and the plants correlate? Some kind of small scale industrial production of something naturopathic?

I was all set to buy something with more of a cargo footprint for the limited times I need the capacity and thought it would be cheaper to just buy a trailer with quick release. I'm thinking of buying the wicycle DIY kit over the winter and rigging something together.

Without Disclosing my location: I think we're getting the odd grizzly showing up now and again. I think it was this year that someone witnessed, without proof, a black bear and a grizzly going at it on the pole line close to town. There are plenty of black bears here and they pretty much rule. Heavy fines and public shame should you cause a bear to be destroyed.

That was a thorn alright. I just can't imagine how though. Maybe, like trying to break an egg from the narrow angle, there's a strength there when approached at the right/wrong angle. Like spider web, and now I learned about Prince Rupert's Glass. Thorns. Wow.

Yes, and I feel sad for the food serving business.

Not really. I am a chartered herbalist, but I do that on my own time. My work is on the outreach level. The gloves will be used for projects. The Maltese Cross - I'm Maltese.

I have an Aosom trailer that's still unused. It was bought for the Rad but I've had to address a few issues before I do that set-up. The Rad was so crappy on the hills that I wanted to do a power upgrade first. I am also working on maintaining my other bikes as well - sounds crazy, but remember - vehicle replacement. But the trailer will still eventually be pulling behind this bike when I get around to it. I'll check out the wicycle DIY kit.

It seems that my parts collection is growing - a 750w motor, a battery, a rad display, a rad controller.

There are quite a few options to get a hauler going and I guess it's a decision based on how heavy you will accept your ride to be? This RadRunner Plus bike and my Rize Liberty are probably the heaviest I want to go with an ebike. Anything heavier and I might as well be driving an off-road e-fastbike. It would be interesting to know what you decide on a cargo bike. I thought you posted a photo of a thorn strike on your tire and now I don't see that photo.

Today on the trails - but I wanted to stick to the sunshine and open fields today as it is harvest season and there is lots to explore. This trail is ligit - it really does go on forever, though likely not this nice down further. These trails are mapped and are a part of a biking network. That said - we are talking pole line, soft sand, and then likely into horse trails. I'll have to explore more into the trail system at some point in time. My EBR ebike recording so far has only been riding on relatively easy terrain. I've spent the past year just getting to know my ebikes and learning to ride them. I haven't yet learned how to work on them myself. So, putting these ebikes through rough terrain and really giving them a good work-out will only happen when I get more maintenance tools to use - like a hoist!

Typical Corylus tree. Also called filbert & hazelnut.

Filbert Trees of the Pacific Northwest

20220920_172253.jpg

September 20, 2022. A RadRunner Plus day.
I picked for about seven hours today in my local area and finished filling the bowl. A magpie came for a quick visit, a crow moved me along, pigeons looked suspicious, bikers smiled, motorists fist-pumped, the sun was hot, the boots held me up on steep embankments, the bike arrangement worked.

Yeah that spare parts collection is creating some good opportunities for you.

The flat I had was a direct hit from what looks like a two inch roofing nail. Surprised it didn’t come through the rim as well.

I had a Burley trailer for maybe two years or so before I had to retire it from service. Excited by the DIY wicycle kit, thinking of something roll-top retractable and with good padding for less noise. A solar panel would be amazing but not sure I’m that ambitious or it would be worth the investment in panel, converter, etc.

I worked with a guy in Barcelona who’s family had a big hazelnut orchard and sold them in bulk and remember being fascinated by it. Feeling daft as I just learned they are also called filberts and grow in the Pacific Northwest.

Complete segue but when I was out yesterday I ran into a guy at a coffee shop with a Runner Plus and one of these and talked for a while about tips and tricks. I’d never seen a LiteLok before and asked him what the heck it was and got to take a good look. It was wild, not flexible but lightweight and good luck cutting through that baby. Red Dot winner and Secure Diamond. Thinking of adding it to my arsenal of locks (I have four and use anywhere from one to four depending on the scenario).

Charging up after running around town getting things done. I am exploring a replacement seat for this replacement seat.

Thanks for the info on the lock - always good to know about the things that work for people.

Before I knew anything about anything last August 2021, I ordered a Grizzly as my first ebike ever. I was so excited. I was in love.

Then I remembered that I am a short rider and my heart sank. I think that I went a little wild because Ariel Rider graciously talked to me about the challenge on the Grizzly for a short rider, they cancelled my ordered for my own benefit - I was grateful but felt lost and pissed. It wasn't until this year a few months ago that I realized that I could wear platform boots. Then when I contacted Ariel Rider again, somehow things changed over the past year and they do not ship to Canada. Too bad because now they have the step-through.

A few months ago I got the itch to buy another ebike - bad jag. And knowing that Ariel does not to ship to Canada I thought that I would contract my own shipper. So I went through a lot in the past few months and worked with someone on Craigs' List who had a new Ariel Rider X class for sale, fully loaded with sweetness. The Freight Forward company looked like it was going to work. The freight company required the ebike to be crated up before pick-up and the seller was willing to build a crate for it - he used to build them for a living! It would have worked and the cost would have been about 300.00 CAD for the Freight Forward company. But I let it go. It felt like it was getting to be too much to deal with once it arrived to the mainland and have another company transport the crate to me. It's a long story, but yes, I know about the Grizzly and Ariel Rider. Thanks for posting this.

How interesting, I had no idea you ordered one. What a beast. That demo up the steep grade speaks for itself. Too bad about the seat height being physically set, I remember hearing about that in the video. I just googled and read about a guy 5'8" who couldn't flat foot it. Strange engineering decision.

A lot of hardcore shipping policies like this come from companies who get beat senseless by people screwing them over. The impetus may just be protecting themselves as opposed to greed or lack of compassion. Hard to tell until you've run afoul of something. Hopefully it's just a flavour of the negotiate high, settle low thing.

We're already getting frost warnings here in the east at night. The all-too-short eastern riding season is disa...
