RadRunnerPlus - journal

Hey gloflowers, love the colored tires! Very 80's BMX inspired! I see you mentioned a Apollo City as part of your fleet. How do you like it? I'm thinking of getting a new dual motor model for playing around with.

Ah ok, gotcha now. Even on steep hills I find the effort in PAS 5 pretty nominal, but I'm curious and will do a better field test on just throttle.

I really like it. The City is cool but not for my area. Dual motor sounds like FUN. Getting one with suspension would be best for my area and it would probably be more fun. To tell you the truth, I haven't been riding it lately. It is parked by my couch near me and I love it. I like that I can fold it up and throw it into my gas vehicle and take it with me. But, there is always the trade off, isn't there? The gear that I must wear is substantial.

Regarding the coloured tires - I don't wear reflective clothing and most often I am in black, so the tires do the "see me" part of staying safe.

According to Rad Customer Service, they have changed couriers and as of February 2022 there is no shipping to my area. Boo. No front mounted basket in my future from Rad. Now comes The Hunt.

🔊 UPDATE: Persistent. I phoned Rad in the hopes that I would get to talk with someone about my brakes. I was on hold for 1 1/2 hours (please change up your on-hold music). When I finished talking about my brakes I brought up the shipping to my area issue again - third time lucky? I spoke with someone who put me on hold three or four times while he checked things on his end. In the end I was able to buy the front-mounted basket on the phone. And it will be shipped to my area! whoohoo!
UPDATE: May 18, 2022 - Tracking number received.

Not a review, just a question by Chris G. on 17 Aug 2021
I just purchased the 35a controller and display for my Radrunner Plus and am possibly looking to upgrade the motor and battery. Will this motor work on the plus (already 7 speed cassette with power lead exiting on the brake side) also will the 52v 17ah battery sold here work?

Hi Chris - our 750w motor cable comes out on the right side where the 7 speed gears is located. On some Radrunner models "EU" has it coming out on the left side. This particular model will not work with our motor. Hope this is clear.

😨 WOW - what a scare that was.

Nice list!
What about the battery? 😁
Not up grading the battery yet. Maybe in a few months when I upgrade this bike to hydraulic brakes. I have two bikes that I am upgrading right now (visit my Rize Liberty journal thread). I just bought a secondary battery for my other bike and a battery for my gas vehicle (which I ended up not needing in the end. The old one wouldn't hold a charge because I have been riding my bikes and not driving my old Mercedes since September 2021 - which is apparently hard on the battery). Thanks for the reminder - I've just edited my upgrade list and added the battery. The Aosom trailer is still in the box.

Awesome, just make sure to get the right motor inhibitor connector when you purchase your brake.

Do you have a red (2pin) or yellow(3pin) connector?
I did not know that - thank you. I have the Red/2pin

RadRunner Plus - Power Upgrade - Area 13/Bolton Bikes:
Display and Controller - Received.
$45.00 CAD international fees

The Runner+ is in the shop for a flat repair, and the power upgrade minus the motor upgrade. I've had to order the "special tool" for the freewheel removal for the motor upgrade. Area 13 is shipping it out and it will be roughly 19 days for the tool to arrive to me. They gave me free shipping. This power upgrade is a struggle as the garage is unsure about how to proceed. I've sent videos and instructions but the garage does not like to do this kind of work.
The motor upgrade may have to be assigned to a different garage.

The power upgrade is still in progress. I rode to the garage on my Liberty to make sure I still had a bike. The shop tech told me that he wasn't ready for me yet and that he is chipping away at it. It's a small town so I knew what that meant. I just backed out saying no problem, just let me know if he needs anything. I think that this is taking a long time, and I also think that it will pay off in the end.

July 6, 2022. I think that my garage does not want to do the upgrade and does not want to tell me, or something? What is taking so long?

Creepy Rome is hea 😳.
Lovely pics I enjoy watching pictures of ebikes in action. I'm gonna order a Canada 🇨🇦 flag to stick on my Canadian made ebike. Just like German flag 🇩🇪 on my Bulls.
I just sprayed the whole bottle of Nano Shock ceramic wax. Just waiting for 15 minutes before I hose em cleaned.
WHO CARES.

Power upgrade done - not the new 750w motor though. Still stock motor.
The Bolton Bikes Freewheel Removal Tool came in. Took a while.
Now I have to set up the new display with the correct codes.

Oh My God. It's like having a new bike with the controls set as in this video.
This Runner is now officially a *Plus*. The torque is scary jumpy and it just wants to climb.
I understand that more power can be gained by a battery upgrade as well as the 750 watt motor in box and waiting to be installed,
But holy macaroons, this Area 13 Rad Power Upgrade has given this bike the zing zap zowy (highly technical terms) that I need from it.
I am not needing range for this bike as this one is mainly for short cargo type of trips. So I do realize that longer trips will see the same battery usage relative to all of the variables we always talk about, but that is not a concern with 100 percent power on deman instantly. My driving range/area is relatively small with this bike. Just get me up those hills without peddling and I am good to do chores. Thanks Area 13! ⚡Bolt on!

I will reassess when this bike starts hauling the trailer that I bought for it.

I'm not gonna lie - battery life just got trickier. Ahha. It's funny re-reading one's own reasons for doing what we do until reality hits. Real funny.
Now - battery needs an upgrade not necessarily for range in terms of how far I can go, but for range in terms of what wattage the battery can handle for a period of time.
I'm putting the pieces together and maybe it's time for another night of Grin Technology videos to remind me what universe I'm in.

Also, I've recharged for hours and the battery bar display reading is still showing only three bars. I'm pretty certain that at 1:00AM after charging for seven hours the deed should be done. I'm concerned because, I touched my charging port socket on my battery with my key by mistake of course, and received a spark. I'm thinking that I may have fried the battery. I've just made more work for myself with one slip of the hand maybe. yikes.

🔌Battery not charging; Gonna try this:
I've removed the 5 amp fuse and will go and pick up another one tomorrow.

I bought the 5amp and inserted it into the battery with needle nose pliers.
Battery is now charging. YAY!

I will put tape on my battery charging site as a mindfulness reminder.

Update: July 12, 2022. It happened again - the battery just died without me doing a thing. Died going up a steep hill. Ouch. Had to quickly cut into a driveway for a level surface. I installed another 5amp fuse. Works. New fuses, a small knife to pry out fuse cover, and needle nose pliers have been added to saddlebag.

Update: Many days later . . . the battery wants to shut off on this one specific hill - she's a steep one - every time. I instead of assuming that it is the fuse, I removed the battery and then reinstalled it. Works. This happens sometimes now with this battery since the Rad Power Upgrade. I don't think that has anything to do with the hardware that was installed, but I may be wrong. I think that it has something to do with the battery mount.

Hello G,

First thing is ensuring that your controller is rated for up to 72v nominal. A 72 volt battery fully charged is 84V.

Watt ratings on motors are completely misguiding, you can run the Radrunner's original motor at 2000 watts. Will it overheat at that power, possibly after X amount of time at a sustained 2000 watts, this is why we put tempurature sensors in all of our motors so you can safely run higher power. Motor wattage ratings are there to abide by federal and local ebike regulations. So if you purchased your 750 watt motor to boost your power from a 500 watt motor, chances are they could be very similar in power and only labeled differently by the seller.

The Radrunner in our most recent video is currently running a 72v battery with an 1800 watts limit with the original motor and hasn't had any overheating issues yet.

Brakes gone - again. I'll do the upgrade to hydraulic breaks now. I'll look at the links that someone posted here on this thread for hydraulic breaks on AliExpress (Nutt?).
The stock breaks suck.

In your display settings, what is your P5 set to? I have a 48 volt battery and have it set to 0. The percentage seems pretty close. Maybe try that?
