Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

Closer to the truth than you might have imagined. For the last years of the Kombi's life with us it travelled almost daily to and fro from our home to the History Department of the University of Auckland.

As we lived in an old farmhouse—with a big red barn, Dodge—in a rural area named Buckland, it was a case of travelling from A to B every evening. Auckland to Buckland; how strange!
I knew it!

It was another superb morning for our daily analog ride but we decided to stray from our regular route for a slight change of scenery.

A couple of barn pics to augment @dodgeman ‘s posts. I don’t know the history behind these structures only that they were along the intended route. The Little Red Barn has been converted into a gift shop/café which I hear has received praise from the locals.

There were a few acreage homes in the Canyon Hts/Balmoral districts with some nice views of the valley and farmland beyond.

The surrounding golden fields of barley are a sure sign of late summer judging by their ripe heads.

House on the Hill…

House on the Hill, near Esk, Queensland

Seen from Brisbane Valley RT
SE Queensland, Australia

This is a classic Queenslander home with a wide veranda running around several sides. As is the way with rural homes, it seems to have had additions made over the decades.

Here are some clips from a ride that I a few weeks ago. These are the back roads to the south and west of Mount Ascutney. There are some seriously steep sections, but the ebike‘s pedal assist takes the sting off. Beautiful area.

I am very new to GoPro and this is my first attempt at editing a video. There is a learning curve, but that’s part of the fun.

I think I started something with this barn thing. I mainly started the barn photos since there is barns, corn or soybeans in my area. There are a surprising amount of hills, it’s not uncommon for me to get over a 1000 feet of elevation gain, but no mountains, no oceans and no castles. Nevertheless I did 16 miles today and barn of the day. Looks like a patch of sweet corn out front and the barn still has the old lighting rods.

Looks like a great area to ride with plenty of varied terrain. Thanks for sharing and keep those vids coming. 👍

Good rate of knots there

A bleak Friday ride without a shadow to be seen…

Moreton Bay Cycleway : Norfolk Island Pines; Scarborough Beach

The weather forecast was for a 'fine' day: no rain. That was correct, as were the predicted light winds. What wasn't mentioned—perhaps, I simply didn't take note—was that the sun would not be seen all day and temperatures would remain resolutely in the teens from start to finish. Brrr! I should have stayed home and read the oft-mentioned 'good book': which is what I will do now whilst finishing off yesterday's leftover dinner.

The map reveals an inconvenient truth of modern life: wilderness banished by 'development'.

A stunning part of the world. I had the pleasure of spending a Fall living there just prior to covid, the other side of Woodstock near Barnard. Just Norman Rockwell picturesque. I follow Ted King on YouTube as he rides stupid distances criss-crossing the state.

This was our view every morning:

That, a local NEIPA from down the road and blissful ignorance of what was just around the corner for the world... Life was good.

We took a drive up to Burlington Vermont on Wednesday to ride the Island Rail Trail that runs from Burlington to Grand Isle. Round trip is about 27 miles if you don’t venture out onto Grand Isle. Views include the Burlington waterfront, the Adirondack and Green Mountains, Lake Champlain and Grand Isle. There is a 200 foot gap near Grand Isle and a bike ferry to take people and bikes across the gap. This is a short video that I took on the way back to Burlington. I will put together a longer video tomorrow.

Thank you for the positive comment. I can’t take any credit for the scenic beauty of the area.

The fall colors will be here before we know it. I always loved the ride from Claremont, NH to Woodstock, especially coming in on Rte 106 into South Woodstock. There is a little restaurant in Woodstock that makes a Ver-Monte Christo with all locally grown, organic ingredients. I think that it might to be time to ride over to Woodstock again.

Please let me know if you find yourself back this way and if you want to go for a ride.

Another gorgeous day:

The"dead end" out at West Beach was caused by road construction, which caused us to have to backtrack and reroute around it. It also gave us almost 2 "extra" miles 😁.

No pics today, sorry! The detour had me all discombobulated. I'd put some old ones up, but I've already done that 🤣. I'll be more cognizant of photo ops next week!

4K, sorry my supercomputers in the shop😉

That is one beautiful hike!

And, only one other person on the trail 🤣!
Yup, just me and my friend and about 10 million others, both day hikers and backpackers. For those who bike ride gravel roads, this is one rather intense 20 or so miles of gravel but you would not want to bike it - the dust would fill your lungs as the 5 million cars and pickup truck pass. And I don't know the ultimate grade but it is very steep the last few miles. Using the Crosstrek's manual 1, 2 and 3 gears to climb and descend the steep curves. Seriously, its a long way in on a dirt road but that did not stop National Park seekers. The lot was filled and cars lined both sides of the road below the parking lot. Views from the parking lot are actually quite rewarding. And you can hear the ice falls off of Johannesburg Mt. But I apparently missed the mountain goats that the tourist scared away!
