Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

Looks good, us Brits are consumed by convenience, we will put fast and easy before the quality, and we get impatient in restaurants, much like we would on a long queue at McDonalds.
I will admit my food choices are almost completely determined by how busy a place is.

No queue..?

Lets go there...

What does it serve?

Dunno, dont care.

The view from my dads back garden, if the tree wasnt there .

I still remember the video that you posted a while back when you visited your dad. I seem to recall that there was footage of the seaside of you blasting through the surf on your bike. The background music was also sublime. Then again, my retention of information over time isn’t what it used to be. 🤨

Now, see, I think life is too short to waste eating food that isn't worth waiting for. No soylent green, no extruded foodlike substances for me, thank you.

Not that I like to stand in line, but very often, if locals are waiting for a table at an independently owned establishment, they know something good is in store.

Exactly! So far, it was Balkan and... American food, Southern U.S. style! Lucky me to be to a German schnitzel restaurant, too! (I'm taking German Currywurst for lunch today, popular street food).

Zwiebelschnitzel mit Kroketten, or Onion Schnitzel with Croquettes. Decidedly German food!

Impressive architecture at the Frankfurter Messe. The trade fair in Frankfurt is the world's third by size, and the organization is the largest trade fair company worldwide.

I commute with a public share e-scooter here. It takes me less than 10 minutes to get to the Messe from my hotel at cost of €3.50. Also invaluable for returning from dinners with my American colleagues. Bike lanes are everywhere, and these are safe. If no bike lane, it is possible to ride with traffic. Riding is safe here as the drivers respect riders totally. Yes, it is Germany.

P.S. I taught one of my American friends activating and riding e-scooter, and he enjoyed the ride very much. The thing was easy as the Uber app works with Lime e-scooters!

At an American restaurant. I tried corn soup, teriyaki, pulled pork with baked beans, and corn bread. Not showing the picture from the Balkan (read: Serbian) restaurant as the latter was a culinary disaster for me... My American buddies laughed at my description of "piles of meat". It was a battle we all lost! 🤣
I always got a kick out of what European restaurants thought ”American” food was. I have to admit, I don’t know what ”American” food is. We have everything from Rocky Mountain Oysters, (worse than it sounds, don’t ask), to New England Clam Chowder and everything in between. The European “American” meals are about as authentic as American Chinese cuisine. The worst thing that I ever ate was some Sea Urchin from a Sushi Bar in Wisconsin of all places, (home of the cheese curd. The best ones squeak as you bite). They can be habit forming, (the cheese curds, not the Sea Urchin). This post is making me hungry and nauseous at the same time, not cool!!!

I recently cycled round beautiful Loch Katrine and I spotted the pleasure boat down below and I thought it would be awesome to sail round the loch in it! So today was the day and the weather played ball, no cycling involved this time though! ;) I had actually arranged this for my sister, she was in need of a pick me up after we lost our dad recently, it just so happened it was the day after my Arran trip! To keep it cycling related, the cycle hire shop had a penny farthing parked outside and its little brother!🤣

Our ride for today, The Lady Of The Lake (should be loch;)) @Chargeride

The 1 hour trip was excellent with lots of information provided about the area, the real bonus was the weather which made it the perfect boat ride! I really don't fancy being stuck on a boat for 16 hours though @Prairie Dog

I caught the other boat arriving, Rob Roy III!

A few photos from the boat!

2 days of awesomeness but back to reality tomorrow, a day of rain! I need a rest though so a lazy day is inviting to me!;)

Sunday is looking good for a ride, I will decide later where I might go!

I don’t know what ”American” food is.
I mentioned the food was of the Southern U.S. style. We don't get things such as corn soup or honey glazed corn bread in Europe. Teriyaki is rare here. BBQ such as ribs or brisket is the American thing. Baked beans, mac & cheese? The thing that really drew my attention was abundance of meat compared to really small portions of the sides.

I was there in the company of four Texan, one Coloradian, and a Berliner.

This is a good example of German food. Frikadelle mit Bratkartoffeln und Senf, or meatballs with baked potato and mustard.

Currywurst, popular German street food. Pork or beef sausage with ketchup, curry and a delicious bun. The German know how to bake bread! Of course a cup of Lager goes with it without saying!

Back to e-bikes. I could spot a German guy riding a big full suspension e-bike with a huge Direct Drive motor using the throttle on Thursday evening. How possible? The guy had his e-bike registered (and insured for sure) making it a moped. I could also spot several people riding quality e-bikes here in Frankfurt. Sometimes, you can see a food courier on a fat tyre e-bike. Still, food couriers seem to prefer riding rented e-scooters (you can easily buy an inexpensive daily subscription for an e-scooter).

I could live in Germany. In 1990, I spent 3 happy months there (working scientifically), and I rode over Ruhr Area on a borrowed bike in my spare time. No helmets in those times!

I too had a friend with luminous green 90s shorts and I too prefered denim.

Back on the road once again today and judging by the rural surroundings, fall isn’t too far away as harvesting is already underway.

Yesterday’s ride had me on the trails at the local mtb park. What a treat as I had the single tracks all to myself. Sweet! 👍

Safe At Home...

I still cannot figure out where these mythical millions of German e-bikes have gone as I could see only a handful of them in Frankfurt.

Two interesting e-bikes spotted though.
1661590195054.png

The Urban Arrow. A family or cargo e-bike (depending on version). A Bosch motor, Enviolo, 500 Wh battery, good components, it costs €6,400. Undoubtely a product of Frankfurt am Main.

Swapfiets (no picture of the recent very nice e-bike available). The latest Swapfiets is equipped with a Bosch motor and nicely integrated battery. The special thing about the brand/system is it is based on a monthly subscription. You select the model, agree for a demo ride with a participating LBS, get your Swapfiets delivered. You do everything related to the subscription payment, mobile repair service etc in a phone app. There are even procedures in the case of a Swapfiets theft!

The monthly fee is around €80.

I found a huge LBS in the very city centre that carried both brands. Unfortunately, I could not visit the store during the opening hours. However, I could spot several Swapfiets in Frankfurt.

Is that a picture you took or from an advertisement? How does one balance that load. If one of those kids is a bit less disciplined and starts leaning.....

I wondered that myself though it does appear that there are integrated belts to somewhat limit the child’s movements. I saw a similar Cube cargo bike in a LBS and it looked pretty stable. My wife remarked that the motorized two-wheeler with a bucket would be ideal for making daily runs out to our community garden plots which are several kms away. The price point had me thinking that it would end up just being a really fancy wheelbarrow with little to no space to accommodate it in our already cramped for space garage.
