Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

The Road Not Taken...
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. R. Frost

I just wanted to say the Winter has come back to Poland. Anyone planning replacing their winter tyres with something like Johnny Watts is recommended to wait until April (relevant to the Northern Hemisphere) :) Riding out for 60 km soon to educate my friend Anice on her Como 5.0, replace her pedals with a gift from me, inflate the tyres, etc ;)

Yes yes, I know I will need the 6 mm Allen key, not the 8 mm one :)

Another news: The Sunday 80 km group ride has been cancelled because of very strong wind forecast. I knew it before...

We've missed you …

Friends from Fernvale Farm

Welcome back! I often pass this herd but they are usually too far away. This morning they obliged. I stayed on my Powerfly whilst leaning on a fence post – ready for a speedy exit should they take it into their minds to charge.

Race Face Ride :)

The weather has been weird since this morning. It was over the freezing point, with magnificent sunshine and very strong westerly wind. What clothes to put on? I settled on merino wool basic layer with the "Spring" wind-resistant trousers and a Softshell jacket. Combined with my own heat generated on the ride, it was just about right.

I was riding on the Vado. When making a short stop in Raszyn at a bus stop, an old lady approached me. She needed to talk. We exchanges some pleasantries. When she was leaving the place, she said: "Your comeliness is beautiful". "Thank you!" I said, totally surprised :)

The outbound ride leg was easy. Riding with tail-wind brought me to Anice & Lech in some 100 minutes gross ride time. Anice -- as always -- had served good victuals, of which pork jelly was just delicious!

Then I replaced Anice's Como pedals with Race Face Ride (green). Spring! Come! I'm excited to build a ride gang with Anice and other friends!

The September 1st, 2019 group ride. Lech (in blue helmet) had forgotten inflating the wheels of Anice's (yellow cap) traditional bike and it didn't go really well. Anice discovered e-bikes soon. It took a while before she bought her own to be in the lead of the pack :) @Jerzy Bańkowski is in the front of the photo.

The same place: January 16th and March 6th, 2021.

I deliberately took the ride through the Kabacki Forest twice on today's ride. The dirt was packed and hard. On the return, I inadvertently rode into another forest road. Oh, that was bad. Liquid mud and puddles... I had to negotiate that segment in the 2nd gear... (I'd prefer the granny gear but my Vado's drivetrain needs some adjustment).

My ambition was to cover the whole trip on a single battery. I could almost do that: The battery #1 (that is not 100% healthy) was good for 60.0 km. However, I had to replace the battery just 4 km away from home... Wind! Massive headwind! I should have been saving the battery when riding with the wind!

A big news now: I got a message from my new riding buddy Przemek: "Stefan, despite of terrible weather forecast for Sunday, we're riding out for 72 km. 8:00 a.m., a start location is in Grodzisk Mazowiecki. Will you join our group?" Hah. "And I wouldn't be able to raise a full bathtub with my both hands?!" :D Of course, I'm joining. On the Trance E+ as some off-road riding is expected :)

There is a Warsaw cycling enthusiast fan-page on Facebook that I joined. I presented myself and my Vado there, telling the group members of my background. Nobody -- I repeat -- nobody said anything bad on e-bikes! On contrary, I got a lot of encouragement, Likes, and the members assured me I would be gladly welcomed to group rides! The world's changing... I can bet many of those people would be riding e-bikes if they could afford them.

Conditions here have deteriorated as was evident in our ride last night. The single track that was in great condition less than a week ago was dismally soft and it ultimately turned into a case of my tires breaking through to the layer underneath. Even the hard packed paths had melted and left pools of standing water in some areas. The third member of our group had to concede to the conditions due mainly to the fact that he was riding a standard MTB and couldn't power through the trail.

We’ll be out again on Sunday morning with a vengeance as the forecast is calling for cooler temps and hope that slightly improved settings will greet us on the trail.

@RandallS – Your visit here next Tuesday may have to be postponed conditions permitting. I can only hope that Riverbend won’t be as severely affected.

Art, you're far more hardcore than I ever tend to believe!
(Now I wonder whether the sentence above is really in English) :D
I give the hardcore award to the third member of group for going as far as he could given the set of wheels that he was riding. 👍Even the pond ice was starting to melt. 😮

I was hoping to do a 50 miler today but my dad was having a bad day :( I wasn't even going to go out at all because he was really struggling! He convinced me to go eventually so I just went out for a couple of hours! It was hard to enjoy it even though my sister was with him, he has become to reliant on me since I lost my job! Once I got going I did eventually enjoy it, it was dry but a little cold! The forecast was supposed to be light winds which it was at first but when I was on my way back the wind was really picking up! I only had 1 battery today which was only charged to 83% but it held out despite the wind and climbs!
