Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

"Ring-ring! I'm your DHL courier. Are you at home?"

8:30 am. I expected the courier an hour later. So I responded:
-- Are you not expected to charge me some 90 zloty? I would need to ride to an ATM first!
-- No, no payment at delivery expected...
-- Are you sure?!
-- Yep.
-- Please come!

So I stare at my brand new Specialized Zee Cage II in disbelief. No charge? Free? I will need to talk to the salesman! A gift?! :D

So I put the bike all together, switched on.....nothing.
Stripped all the wiring open again and Id snapped off one of the leads directly from the cct board, and didnt know where it went.
Extended my electronic knowledge to the limit, concluded it was a gnd wire.
Resoldered, works like a dream.

Back to ride posts very soon.

The sun came out, it was almost 45 degrees, so we have it a shot, hoping to do about 12 miles around the military base. Electric socks did a great job keeping feet warm, "winter" riding gloves, not so great, face very cold! Only lasted 5 miles! I'm going right to evil Amazon and ordering a balaclava!

Also got a Gore Beanie which is good as I don’t have a lot of hair.

I looked at a cycling balaclava, but they all like like something a bank robber would wear.

The idle life…
Trawler in Cabbage Tree Creek, Shorncliffe

Cabbage Tree Creek, Shorncliffe (Moreton Bay)
21 km; almost one hour into the ride.

Two kilometres before my regular coffee stop at Mario's old Italian Piaggio Ape, I pass this little orange prawn trawler. It's mine signal to 'get a move on': over the Shorncliffe Headlands – not really too much of a rise – and then down to Moora Park (above video) for a questionably 'well-earned break'.

The joys of retired life.

Presumably, a bank robber with a biggy gun.
Recently, I remove my helmet/goggles and balaclava and replace them with a face mask before entering a supermarket. The security there has already learned recognizing me wearing my full gear but why make them nervous... :D

Ah, @David Berry: It was good to see you in your video, at least for a while!

Somehow, I managed to crop/delete/mute the sound. Better luck next time!

Like this?

Masked but clearly identifiable…

Black-fronted Dotterel

Black-fronted Dotterel
Kedron Brook Wetlands Reserve
I came across this fellow yesterday beside the Moreton Bay Cycleway as it passed the Brisbane International Airport. Ready to slip the country? Actually, I think it is quite common to find wetland birds near coastal airports.

The species name in English refers to a bib across the bird's chest (not visible in this image, but you can see it in thumbnail #9 below).

Dotterel's Location : Kedron Wetlands, Brisbane

For those interested in photography, thumbnails #4–#8 (below) show this little bird before the image was cropped. Even with the lens zoomed to 500mm, I was too far away and there was no way I was going to plod my way through that mucky ooze! Dotterels might be able to walk on a paper-thin crust, but I'd sink right through!

Another blustery but mild day, it really doesn't feel like January! At least the winds were only 30mph, tomorrow they will be around 60mph so it will be a day indoors! I got my grocery shopping done today ;) Its so strange seeing dry roads at this time of year but I'm not complaining, getting home with a clean bike sure is a bonus! What a great ride it was, it was actually 2 rides as I returned home to have lunch and to make sure dad was ok!

I was pleased to see the Shetland ponies back in the field today, they have been missing for quite a while! I think the grass was too nourishing, they totally ignored me! 🤣

I passed under the main motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, good to see this road clean for a change! Its very prone to flooding...

There's quite a climb after going through the underpass but no problem for a capable ebike, its quite a blast in the opposite direction! 314 miles now covered in January, I'm hopeful of getting out on Sunday in between the storms, there's supposed to be a lull on Sunday morning but after that its looking pretty dismal going into the afternoon and also going into February! January has been a really good month, I fear winter is going to come late this year...

It was a stunning sunny day spent in idyllic trail conditions as I tackled four consecutive single tracks. Starting from home I rode 5km to the trail head at Garden Heights and from there continued on to the highline trail at MacKenzie Bluff, then it was onto The Pines before finishing off with a loop at Heritage Ranch. A temperature of -5C set the scene for sublime surface conditions for the ISPs. Ice and hardpack were the order of the day and by the end of the ride I didn’t ride away disappointed.

I was continually greeted by the sun on the trails and my spirits were buoyed throughout the afternoon as my bike and I merrily rolled along.

The undulating terrain and short steep pitches were no match for the ISPs torrid grip on the slippery ice coated hard pack along the Pines single track.

I followed a white-tailed doe about 20 meters along the Heritage trails before she pranced off into the woods to join her mates.

More of the locals greeted me along the Devonian Trail in Kin Canyon on my way home.

That look like great gloves, thanks! I'll check them out.

Just ordered a beanie with holes for glasses 🤓

The usual with a slight odd variation to avoid the endless construction of a new storm sewer vault where the pavement (???) is potholed, heaved, rutted, and detours over railroad tracks and a 5 foot wide, if that, sidewalk with a telephone pole in the middle (they did put padding around it like you'd see around ski-lift towers). Only to be about a mile and a half from home: Is that a flat I ask me fellow rider. "Yes, but only the front! Maybe you can give it a temp inflate and make it home" Inflate got me another five blocks. Oh, let's try another temp inflate. Speed up the last of the climb, run a red light carefully and make it home with mushy tire to spare. Okay, time to ditch these flat prone tires and let the bike shop do it for me. A little, tiny thorn.

Okay, 16.6 and 670 feet of climbing. Chilly and the right toes did not enjoy the last half of the ride.
