Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

Chanced a ride around my nearby seaside resort.
As a boy, my father (born 1912 in Ashton-under-Lyne) grew up in Oldham and spent summer weekends at Southport. Decades later, his stories of the sea retreating so far, and then rushing back as the tide came in, were just too fantastical for me to believe.

Strade Bianche? (Not quite!)

Wanora Road : West of Brisbane

Wanora Road
About 60km west of Brisbane.
Some of the best World Tour (top tier of professional road cycling) racing is on the famed white roads (strade bianche) of Tuscany. Dust billows from a peloton of ten dozen multi-coloured lycra-clad roadies, these days women as well as men; however, before they have the gravel roads to themselves, thousands (literally!) of gravel enthusiasts have fun in the dust or, all too often, mud.

Gravel riding and racing is making its appearance in Australia but, usually, I have the gravel roads of Brisbane's hinterland all to myself. Well, maybe an occasional car, truck or fellow cyclist is encountered.

This road is about thirty minutes from our home, but there are comparable gravel roads within two or three minutes of home… and that was a major reason for getting into ebiking.

Cool. My wife is Nikkejin and still has family there. Wow, you were really moving along at a good clip.
You should visit sometime!
I didn’t intend to go that fast actually, I didn’t know it until I had finished the ride. The TCD thing was turned off. I normally don’t think about how fast I go, simply because it’s usually too slow to worry about. On this occasion, because of the assist, I could climb a steep rail overpass without any trouble and I simply rolled down the other side without braking because no one was around. That route is a bit of a roller coaster. Even with assist though, the legs get a workout quite a few times when starting from a red light up an incline. This thing compensates for what wearing the mask takes away from me. Really excited about it!

My wife usually visits her mother annually but due to Covid restrictions, she was unable to return home and this year doesn’t bode that well for her either. I’ve visited Japan a number of times over the years but would dearly love to ride over there.

Not too shabby for a proper first spin on the SL! 👍

Oldham emerges from the wilderness just over the crest of the hill in this picture, this landscape is largely unchanged minus the pylons and would be instantly recognisable to your father.

So I nipped out to 'isolate' outside, the wife us feeling fine and Im OK, so chanced a ride around my nearby seaside resort...kept moving, plenty of breeze, social.
distance and all.
Quick vid of the classic British fish and chips victorian holiday resort.
Elvis impersonators, lovely motorbikes, mod scooters and just a really great atmosphere.

No music..just the mic audio.
Terrific video! Thank you! I loved hearing the snippets of conversations and music and ambient sound - - much better than added background music.

Boy, I miss traveling.

Did about 15 miles ridin’ the Rail in beautiful N.E. Iowa…

Rising Moon …

Farmland NW of Ipswich, Queensland

2:05 pm
Another cool, clear day = another ride in the country not too far from home.
  • Tuesday & Wednesday windy.
  • Thursday cold.
  • Friday wet.
Perhaps, I shouldn't bother to check the weather forecasts. Just go ride!

Trivia: If you look carefully, you might see a masked lapwing (Vanellus miles) on the green grass just to the right of the farm dam. (Click photos to view them full-size.)

Slimmed down the ride; removed front fender, kickstand and top part of rack. 5kg lighter! When I get my new rear tire this week, going to take rear fender, rack off too. I will put them back on when the weather starts turning worse! New name is going to be Fly 9 :)

A little Christmas cheer in July; Ho Ho Ho !!!! I put this in the freezer last Christmas just so I could have an Egg Nog
to enjoy in the heat of Summer :) By the by, it was delicious mmmmmm...

Another morning ride in Tokyo. Urban rides are a bit hectic because I have to dodge maskless joggers and compete with pedestrian and biking commuters, as well as motorists. It’s hard to stay safe. So I decided today to only use assist for hard hills and leave it off most of the time to maximize my workout. Today was about 75% with assistant off. The rest was a mixed bag mostly Eco and and sometimes Turbo during a panic on a hill climb. I was also able to easily go up the hill which almost gave me a heart attack the last time (196bpm) on my old city bike, and incidentally was the rationale to get the Vado SL. Now I realize this bike is perfect for my needs because I can turn it off and ride it like my old bike on relatively flat ground for extended periods. Actually I don’t notice any drag. Maybe because I’m coming from a city bike & not some hot shot road bike. The routes I took were rather residential, so I kept the speed below 15 km/h. Sorry for few photos - I didn’t stop very much and I keep my iPhone in a zippered pocket. I hate to say it but the saddle is a pretty rough ride.

Oh sure, just as I start putting more stuff on, you take stuff off! What tire are you getting?

today's ride was flatter than usual, perfect cycling weather (decent headwinds going west, of course, around 15mph), but my heart was not really cooperating so i had to take it easy. any output over 300w for more than a few seconds resulted in the dreaded premature beats and a most unpleasant sensation. but at an easy cruise, no problems.

32.40 miles / 52.14 km
132 minutes moving time
14.72mph / 23.70 kph average speed
40.42mph / 65.05 kph max speed
1,230ft / 375m elevation gained

today i tried to use no battery at all, but a few short climbs had me poking into the boost... total usage according to mission control, 3 watt hours 😅 😅

another interesting thing i'm discovering is that my riding is very very consistent. this segment, which is downhill briefly and then a long flat stretch of several miles is one i always do with the motor off, typically a bit of a tailwind, and my best five results are within 8 seconds of each other. the july 18 effort, with a much higher output but the same time, must have featured a less strong tailwind, or a stop for traffic.

I woke to a misty morning and my legs were still feeling Sundays 100 miler but I was determined to get out! Just a very local route which is one of my favourites with lots of ups and downs, I didn't take any photos this time as it wasn't the day for it! Just another 21 miles to reach 3,000 for the year, I'm more than happy with that! The sun is now out and its hotting up, 26C later which is way too hot for me! ;)
