Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

Hey, slow down, Dave… mid-November, maybe.
Way beyond that!

Step up to a step-through

On a more serious note:
  • much-vaunted dual battery system held together by velcro straps,
  • paint missing (not scratched or rubbed off; simply flaked off on its own),
  • self-destructed rear fender.
And for the paranoid:
  • spare speed sensor magnet on the rear wheel.

Yeah, your ebike might be in December but not you!😎👍

So now you’re getting rid of the Giant? And what is an ST?
  • Trance E+ stays with my brother, that is, in the family. I actually don't need an e-MTB; Jacek cannot afford a classy e-bike himself; I can always "borrow" the bike from him when in need; and Jacek really deserves riding a good e-bike.
  • Lovelec stays. It is a fairly speed e-bike, extremely well equipped innit. I need to keep a guest e-bike, and The Goode Ole Mule is perfect for grocery shopping, too.
  • Speed Vado remains my main e-bike for long and fast group rides. (By heart, I'm a cycling tourist).
  • Vado SL is going to be my everyday & fitness e-bike. You actually get sweaty riding it! :D
ST = Step-Through. Each of my existing e-bikes has low top tube, so I thought I needed Vado SL in Step-Through style as well. Not. Vado SL is a surprisingly small e-bike and can be mounted easier that any big cousin, even if the former has the male frame!

I woke to a misty morning with the threat of rain so I decided to stay very local, thankfully I only got a little rain and the mist soon dispersed! Lots of ups and downs made for a very enjoyable ride, it really was so much fun! I had only just set off when I came across a fellow cyclist with a slow puncture and no pump! He had pushed his mountain bike to a petrol station but couldn't use the air pump because his bike had a presta valve, I attached my pump and noticed the inner valve was very loose! This was the reason for his slow puncture, luckily I carry a tool to tighten the valve as it happened to me one day!

I advised him to purchase a pump and some tools, he said he was going to as soon as he got home! It turned out he stays in my home town and only had 2 miles to go, he could have walked it easily! ;) He asked me how far I was going and I said only around 30 miles today and he said only? I explained that was just a trip round the block for me, his rides are only around 10 miles but mainly off road! So that was my good deed for today, always happy to help out a fellow cyclist!

My ride today consisted of roads like this for the most part, not long ago this road was full of potholes so it was a nice surprise to see lovely new tarmac!

This road has also had some work done further down, I normally only go up it but I'm looking forward to descending it soon!

Well, funny thing happened at the LBS yesterday! Took my Rockhopper in for a tune-up as it was sitting in my brother's garage for 8 years. While there a guy came in looking at bikes and saw mine, loved it and offered me $475 cash. Right about that time the main mechanic came out wheeling this Cannondale Bad Boy 1 that he had just built up. Of course, my size and even had the seat at the right height for me! Well, naturally, I took it out for a test ride, yep, that's all she wrote hahahaha. So I took the offer from the other guy and had $150 in loyalty rewards from other purchases too. :) They even put on some nicer pedals for me as the stock ones are too skinny, no charge!!!

This thing is a blast, lefty fork that's stiff, Gates belt drive, 8 speed igh Shimano (Alfine) the seat is crazy bad so I will be getting a nicer one. I weighed it, 26 pounds! 11.8 kg for my metric friends :)

Really cool is the light bar in the fork! The seatpost has internal brake lights too, super bright.

Well, enough of my impulse buying, time to get back to my ebiking sojourn, later my fellow adventurers.

That looks beautiful! I've never been convinced by the 'lefty' fork, but slowly I'm warming to it & this stripped back model with the IGH and gates drive looks mean! I still have my 97 Rockhopper, last year pulled it from back of garage and set it up for my 13 year old. It's a great steel beast with no suspension & ritchey tubing. Still love it. We go for good cycles together. When the boy gets bored with it and moves on I might strip it back and slowly build it up with nice parts. Anyway I approve of your spur of the moment purchase!

looks like great countryside for riding, and a really interesting ride profile. lots of elevation for no big hills!

this short ride is sort of my "go-to" on a daily basis when i don't have a huge amount of time and need a little air. the weather was interesting last night, and the normal non-stop ride was interrupted by a car commercial being filmed on the most dramatic stretch of the ride. CRAZY rig cantilevering a film camera at least 20 feet out from the underside of the car, over the steep hillside.

dramatic light, difficult to photograph - too much contrast - but the z7 performed well :D

car commercial filming in progress, with an impatient fellow cyclist itching to get past. the national park service rangers who had closed the road were incredibly accomodating, specifically radioing down to ask the crew to stop for a minute and allow me to pass. two big thumbs ups.

Congrats! Lefties are tres Cool!!

I've been patiently awaiting delivery of my own.

Thats Scotland for you, we don't have huge mountains (Ben Nevis is the highest at only 4413ft 1345m) but its all ups and downs which suits me to a tee! 😁
is there a cycling version of “bagging a munro?!?”

(i think that’s the term. it’s been a while.)

I hit a couple of my favorite trails once again this time riding solo on a delightfully cool Wednesday morning.

The recent weather conditions have been ideal and a boon to the natural greenery along the trails and I found myself, at times, enclosed by the lush growth. It’s an enjoyable almost cozy feeling but also heightens one’s sense of awareness for what could possibly be hiding or lurking around the next bend.

Web capture_23-6-2021_202715_ridewithgps.com.jpeg

The windy conditions were a perfect opportunity to test out a pair of Leatt trail pants for the first time. They’re made from durable lightweight, stretchy material with ventilated areas above the knees. The pre-bent knees accommodate my knee pads rather well and an adjustable ratcheting waist belt was a welcome addition over the traditional nylon clasps and metal hooks. A very comfy fit.

Thankfully there were no equine encounters along the Heritage trail on this morning. A rather benign but fun way to start the day.

On my way to the Pines, I stopped and savored a solitary moment at Bower Ponds and took a couple of photos. This spot will likely be clamoring with visitors once the weekend rolls around.

IMG_20210623_0959521.jpg

After observing the city crews clean up a fallen tree on the pathway, I resumed my ride towards the Pines. Shortly upon entering the trailhead, I noticed that the same large spruce that had blocked the trail last week remained in its same, seemingly restful spot. Perhaps it will succumb to neglect and ultimately transform itself into a nurse tree.

I concluded the morning ride with a gentle climb up down the Riverbend Trail and took in the serene sights and sounds that this wonderful tributary provides.

The gently winding path occasionally runs alongside a neighboring golf course and there were a few duffers out on the links this morning. I’m afraid that I can’t take full credit for this mid flight shot. Thankfully it wasn’t an errant golf ball heading in my direction. o_O

Beautiful Whidbey ride this morning, once again on my La Free! Unfortunately, neither the Ride Control app nor Map My Ride picked it up 😠. I'm giving myself 10 miles, since I ride this route often, but left off one of the loops I normally take that make the distance about 12.

Anyway...

Right off the bat, Ride Control wanted to update. It said it was complete, but was stuck at 99%. After trying, unsuccessfully, to back out a couple if times, just closed the app, reopened, and all was well - except it didn't log my ride. I'm sure it was "operator error", since neither of my options worked 😜. I'll have to get that figured out for next time.

2 deer, 3 bald eagles, sunshine, mountains in the distance, sparkling blue water, great to be home!

What I liked about being back on the La Free: more upright position (may need to raise handlebars on the Flow when we return east), auto mode, "push-pull" shifter, placement of controls (will have to check out adjusting these on the Flow), more natural "bikey" feel.

Things I missed about the Flow: on board controller, brake light (I feel more secure believing I can be seen better), peppier start from stop, throttle (I'm so ashamed to admit this 😱).

It'll take another ride or two to become thoroughly familiar with the La Free again, but off to a FABulous start!
