New Firmware for multiple bikes. Only updatable via the bike shop

Got a notification of new Firmware via email. Updated Mission Control to 3.5. I have a Turbo Vado SL, but it looks like the firmware is available for multiple bikes. I didn't download the release notes.

Looks like motor, display and possibly battery firmware. Mission Control reports that they can only be updated at the shop, bummer 😞

I got the same email. Problem is, I just got my bike down into my shop for winter storage plus some stuff to modify on it so I won't get it to the LBS until next Spring.
 
Here in the UK I also received the same email about the update. It really is extremely difficult for me to take the bike to the nearest specialised retailer, They like to hold onto the bike for the whole day, and what do you update, while I wait, and that means I have to make my own way home on foot, and then return, usually in the evening, again on foot to pick it up.
 
I'da thunk by now your axe would be ground down to the handle. Your nonsense is getting very tiresome, and is unnecessary.

I plan on taking my Vado SL and Creo in for this software upgrade after the first of the year. Last time ('21 I think) I had a firmware upgrade, I was an early adopter and the LBS kind of struggled with it. Hopefully by January, they will have some experience with this upgrade.

In the meantime I look forward to anyone's experiences with this upgrade.

Yes, it is a PITA for some to drag their bike to the LBS for software upgrades. I wish we could do this ourselves but sometimes you should be careful what you wish for.o_O

Oh, well, look at that. I, too, got the email but ignored it as I thought it was the Specialized Shop site sending me one more irritating offer!

Which is strange because the release notes mention a new battery firmware, but in the app it says the latest is still 0.4.15. Also, the app mentions a newer display firmware, but the release notes don't say anything about that.

Ah well. I get updates are good?

It is pretty irritating that I have to bring it to a shop. I live in the mountains. The retailer that I bought my bike from, has switched to ski season. So now I have to wait until spring. Also, pretty much every other electronic thing that has firmware (Bios, phones, cameras, thermostats, locks, IOT devices, routers, etc) is all updateable at home. I guess they are trying to model things like the auto industry.

I got the firmware update today, but service from Specialized leaves something to be desired.

I purchased my Vado SL 5.0 in September, 2021, from a dealer that's ten minutes (via bike) from my house in Berkeley, CA. It's Mike's Bikes, and they have 14 stores in the San Francisco Bay Area. They sell a number of high-end brands. Within a month of when I bought my Vado, Specialized gave Mike's an ultimatum--sell only Specialized or they couldn't be a dealer anymore. Mike's decided not to be pushed around by Specialized and ended their very long and profitable relationship with them. Mike's assured me that they would support my Vado through October, 2022, which they did. That included one firmware update a few months ago.

When I got the Specialized email about the current firmware update, I asked Mike's if they would do it. Unfortunately they can't. So I clicked the link in the Specialized email and searched for dealers, sorted by distance from my ZIP code. The first shop on the list told me they are a custom bike builder and don't sell Specialized bikes. The second on the list didn't answer the phone and said to leave a message. I left a message but they didn't call back. The third on the list said they don't service bikes. The fourth on the list said they could do the update, so that's where I went today--12 miles from home. Because I hadn't purchased the bike there, they charged me $50. I don't mind being charged, but $50 for something that takes 5-10 minutes seemed high. It would seem to me that in the interest of customer goodwill, Specialized would cover the cost of firmware updates and reimburse dealers a small amount for proving that service. (Maybe I live in an alternate universe.)

In the future, I hope that Specialized makes all firmware updates available over the air, through the app, or via a USB connection to a laptop. I wonder if other brands--Trek?--let users update firmware themselves.

What about the 2-year warranty? Shouldn't they be covering the firmware under warranty?

Very good point. I'd suggest that anyone faced with a similar occurrence contact 'Rider-I-Don't-Care' and let us know what their answer is.

I agree with you 100%! I have just submitted a support request on the Specialized website telling them what happened and asking them to compensate me for the $50 with a gift certificate to their online store. Given that Specialized cutoff my dealer (Mike's Bikes) because they wouldn't be exclusive, the least they could do is pay for the update. We'll see what happens.
