New Favorite Tire - Schwalbe Hurricane

Schwalbe has come out with a new tire for 2020, the Hurricane. I have been riding on a pair for two weeks now. In the main, middle tread, the tire has ridges of micro knobs, similar to those found on skinny gravel tires, with a center strip of fine ridges. There are aggressive, bulky knobs at the edges. It offers 5.5 protection rating with a rating of 4 across the board for rolling, road grip and off road grip.

I have been riding mostly on Super Moto Xs. My riding is mostly on paved rural roads but I do like to explore logging and fire roads. We have several packed gravel trails as well. Finding a tire with low rolling resistance, good traction wet and dry and good grip off pavement has been a tall order.

This tire is whisper quiet on paved surfaces and rolls very easily. It is a very fast tire, almost as fast as Marathon Supremes. The traction on road and trail is very good, verging on excellent. It is sure footed on wet pavement as well. The protection level is only 1/2 a mark lower than Super Moto X tires. The rolling resistance is the same as is the road grip but they are 1/2 mark better on off road grip. To me they feel like they are actual better off road by a greater margin and they are noticeably quieter.

They are quite affordable at $41 usd for the 27.5 x 2.4 size Double Deffense Race Guard with reflective side wall stripe.

For me the new Hurricane fits with my riding better than any tire I have ridden on. This tire comes across as the best all purpose tire I have ridden to date.

I just changed both to Conti’s Double
Fighter . The 2.0 width is actually closer to 1.75. Or 50mm is 44mm.
Not as thick ridges on the sides as the Hurricane’s but is built for same purpose (a fast rolling tire for occasional gravel/trail rides. I tested it in even deeper terrain (mud/ 2inch gravel) and has pretty good support.
It does feel and look a little fragile compared to the H’s. Is 30$ on Amazon with 4.6 stars from 91reviews. That’s very good.
Well, if is not long lasting I may have to get the Schwalbes !

This is good info. I think it also says that Schwalbe is listening to customers and adding to their lineup accordingly. There was definitely a need/niche for something at 2.4 between the Super Moto-X and the Rock Razors. Looks like a great tire.

Great review... thanks for posting. I am a big fan of Schwalbe tires with high protection levels that are eBike rated.

Here is another option with a higher Level 7 protection rating and a central rib for the road with side lugs more aggressive off-road traction.

I'm also a Schwalbe Tire fan. My e-MTB has a set of Marathon Plus MTB 29x2.25 .I'm very pleased for the
type of riding I do, rail trails and road. 3000 miles no flats. Flat protection is the primary in tire my buying
decision.

My touring e-bike has Marathon Plus and again an excellent tire. 3200 miles with no flats.

I bought my Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB from bike 24.com.Even with shipping the final cost was the
lowest I found and they had 29.x2.25 size tire which was not available in the US. Shipping was
very prompt considering the tires came from Germany.

Did you get them installed?

I've actually got Moto X's and Hurricanes both on the way right now for my Blade 2.0 (Ordered them both when they had nebulous lead times) and I'm trying to figure out what to install. I'm leaning Hurricanes even though I'm like 80% pavement just because they seem to do so well on it AND so well off road.

I guess I'll be using the Hurricanes then I figure they're newer anyways, so they've probably incorporated even more learnings into them. Luckily I can just send the Moto Xs back - you should be able to sell them pretty quick on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist though if you need to get rid of yours, right now I've found anything bike related gets snatched up fast.

I like my Schwalbe G-One AllAround as they have a consistent nubby surface texture. Very grippy on every surface I’ve encountered yet pretty quiet though certainly not silent. I did have a flat last weekend but it wasn’t the tire, it was the Schwalbe tube that developed a small hole on the rim side of the tube.

As I ride in more varied conditions, I just am more certain that they are the best match so far, for my riding style.

I must say that I fitted the Hurricanes to my 29er and have been very impressed with them. They really suit my type of riding which is predominantly commuting with the occasional non-technical trail ride. Being able to inflate them quite hard makes for very quick road riding. I also have good confidence in their puncture resistance. I would certainly recommend these tyres as an all-round tyre with good performance a good wear rate.

For the summer I put the 27.5 x2.35 G_One Speeds on my Allant+9.9s. They give me a noticeable boost in speed. In the era of Covid I am avoiding trails as they are too crowded for comfort. In the fall I will change over to the Hurricanes.

I keep the Hurricanes on my Riese & Muller Delight Mountain year round.

The Hurricanes are certainly great tires.

My only gripe with them is that they are extremely tight on the rim, which can mean a real struggle both getting them off the rim and getting the bead to set in the first place. Not so bad if you are doing it in a shop or your garage, but it can be a bit rough if you are fixing a flat on a busy highway shoulder.

In my normal riding environment I almost never get flats, so I'm fine with that tradeoff.
