My DIY builds: GMAC, BBSHD, 9C RH212, CYC Photon, ToSeven DM01, Grin All Axle

Definately invest in statorade, you might not need it for your commute but its so easy to do.
100% agree! I’m putting a dual motor bike together. It’s got 2 direct drive motors. Definitely wanting to give 5mil Statorade to each motor. Once I can get around better, I’ll continue the build. I’m using an EVG 24v bike as the donor. lol.

I would be interested in your setup when you figure it out.

I have played with several dual motor setups using the grin tools, would be fun to play with. All my single motor ebikes are just fine and exceed my expectations but Im a bored engineer with lots of free time and an ebike hobby.

Have you seen this video?

This guy made a conversion for a juiced CCX(52V, my bike from 2019-2021) to use a GMAC, my next door neighbor has been using this for 20k miles now, he is the fastest guy I know

Im more about getting a workout than all out speed but like the info.

Right on! Yea, I’ve seen that video. As well as numerous others. That bike pulls hard. Micha (EbikeSchool) has a good video detailing how to wire a single throttle to 2 controllers.

I have a dual 23A BrainPower controller system that I’ll install. It came with a display too. I’ll set the controllers to each 12A. The battery I’ll be using is the one from my ride1Up. I can remove the battery mount so I can move the battery to this bike… as a POC. Id be pulling 24A total which is about what I pull from the battery currently. Depending on the outcome, I might try to install a dual motor VESC with a Cycle Analyst, or maybe without a display.

The motors are both direct drives rated at 48v 1000w.

The squarewave BrainPower controllers are remnants of a scooter I was building. So I can offer them new purpose here. 😎

I have time now, but I’m also less than an abled body right now. Doc says I can’t lift anything over 10LBS. Hopefully in a month I can dig back into this. I have all the parts. I’ll try to take photos so I can make a better build thread than my other one.

I’m not at my PC, but this set up (at 500w each motor) will have almost 15 pounds of thrust more, upon take off, as compared to my 1200w bike. If the EVG 24v bike is up for it, I’d like to give 1000w to each motor. Time will tell.

Grin All-Axle update
The motor was all packed up and returned to Grin. Im convinced something in the integrated torque/pas sensor is the problem. I tried negotiating with this in mind to knock off some $$ off the price (torque sensor is more $ than pas only) but they didnt seem to bite.

Shipping back to Canada was $55 from Colorado. While I love Grin products, the shipping always pisses me off, especially if you want to have some non-warranty work done like replacing motor wires that I had to do on a GMAC. Two way shipping plus shop work was around $200.

I might return to this motor at a later date(next year), I will play with the RH212 and GMAC until then.

RH212/Statorade Updates
Such a beast of a motor, did a worst case 6 mile run (3% average grade) on full throttle (2000 watts initial, reducing to 1500 watts) in 100F heat and motor got up to 77C. Speeds ranged from 28mph to 35mph depending on grade. I have the phaserunner set to 90A phase and 40A battery which my new 21700 pack can easily handle.

I dont see how this motor would ever be the limiting factor at 52V unless your going up a 10%+ hill, in fact the limits now are battery packs, phaserunner and L1019 connector. EM3EV 52V 18650 battery packs with good capacity cells(GA or 35E) seem limited to 30A continuous. My new 52V 21700(50E cells) packs are good for 40A continuous. That being said, the next thing is the Phaserunner. While it can output 2000 watts at 52V with phase amps up to 90A, it only does this for a limited amount of time due to thermal rollback. Basicallly what you see is initial power at 2000 watts tapering off to a constant 1500 watts or so. You can buy a heatsink for the Phaserunner which I will buy eventually but even then, the L1019 connect is the next bottleneck. Max speed on the flats is right at 35mph.

Overall Hub Motor Thoughts
The 52V 30A GMAC/Phaserunner is a really good overall package. It will overheat at the upper end of power but has excellent low end torque and usable torque everywhere without shifting gears. On my rides, its fine for 90% of rides and its only on the most extreme days battling 15+mph headwinds doing my test case run (6 miles at 3% average) as fast as posssible where it overheats. My next door neighbor has this setup on Juiced CCX (bought from me) and has been running it for 4 years now and is a very fast ex motox rider..fastest rider I know.

With the RH212/statorade at 52V 40A, the motor never overheats, The phaserunner when it goes into thermal rollback just reduces power to the same 1500W as the GMAC setup, it seems to do this indefinately.

IMHO, the All-Axle/Statorade/Phaserunner seems like really good compromise. The power limits of the motor seem in line with the phaserunner (both are good for 1500W+ for limited time, rolling back to 1500w) and 5# less than the RH212 (1# more than GMAC). Hopefully this setup will work for me one day

My final post
It looks like my days of ebiking are over. I have decided to retire and move to the texas gulf coast(corpus christi) and spend the rest of my life surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding and fishing.

Bikes are not very well thought of out there and there is no bike considerations on roads.

As it turns out, I have been ebiking for 7 years now as my main activity for recreation and fitness. I tend to get burned out on things around 7 years and doing 5-7k per year and basically riding everyday weather permitting has me pretty much looking for something else to do.

I will still be pedaling a few times a week but will be doing it in a hobie pedal kayak, trying to catch redfish

Its been a fun ride guys, take care and thanks for all the fish

Sounds like an eFoil might be in your future?
Those definitely work better with a 52v Shark pack 🙃

I would think an ebike would be integral to what you plan to do.
I concur.... Biking/eBike is a bit more than a hobby and I understand losing interest in things. For me things like drones and HTPC are a thing of the past that I have little interest in now. But cycling has been with me for just about my entire life and I think will always play some part.

@linklemming... Be well and remember to post a link to the pedal boat forum 🙃

Yes, I agree biking has always been more than a hobby but so have many other things

Biking in Corpus Christi is pretty lame. If you do a google on it they talk about 2 1.5mile trailso_O. Hardly any of the roads have any bike lanes and most texas motorist are not very considerate of cyclist.

Bring up google maps, go to the layers and click on cycling layer and you will see what I mean

The most fun things I have done in my life (in order)

1.) Playing around on racetracks with my turbo miata
2.) Windsurfing at bird island basin (lots of youtube videos), a windsurfing paradise
3.) Sex:cool:
4.) Fishing for redfish in the laguna madre
5.) Surf fishing on padre island
6.) Cycling (MTB and eMTB)
7.) Surfing

Only able to do 1,3 & 6 here in colorado, when I move to corpus I will have more stuff to do.

Possibility of buying a fatbike but riding an ebike on padre island is not allowed and whats the point as you can drive everywhere (lots of videos by texas beach bum on youtube). Might be able to access some secret fishing spots elsewhere but wont know till I get there

I will likely keep one ebike, not sure which one

In the past I used to track my Ford RS2000 and Nissan S15 at my local racetrack. Have to agree with your ranking that was better than sex. 😎 Then I moved onto big boats which was also a lot of fun and an awesome lifestyle. When my daughter started high school we sold it due to us being able to spend less time on it, which turned out to be the right decision. For now it’s e-bikes and I do love the freedom they provide to explore and travel further.

I feel sorry for you two... cause the women I've been with can not be beat 😎
That said... I'll add scuba diving the great barrier reef, Fiji and even parts of the Caribbean have been some awesome experiences.

Have you ever tracked a car?
Just hot laps at a couple at several local places, Blackhawk Farms in Beloit, Autobarn near Joliet. In 1998. went to the Miata National at the Poconos, where we got to loop around the road course. Driving a slow car slow. That's me. Autox too. JR Supercharger, dyno'ed arund 140 HP(?). less than a current model, . Had years of fun with the miata; Now it's too hard to get in mine, Rather hit a golf ball.

No.. but I've owned a few very nice cars to drive. But they don't go like she can. 🙃

I've always loved that car... and I still may get one yet.
That said even driving has lost much of its appeal. Too crowded and been doing it for ever it seems.

I took my 92 miata from stock to 180RWHP to 220RWHP and finally a fully built motor pushing 270RWHP, this is over 10 years of ownership

Looking back the 180 version was the best compromise for street and track.

The 270 version turned out to be a dedicated track car with racing slicks and was not fun on the street.

Here is a video showing the AWESOME biking in corpus

Gotta go see those 1 mile trails in person

Hey, Harry. I owned a Honda S2000 for many years and tracked and autocrossed it. What a load of fun. I think 140HP would be on the low side for really flinging a car around, but I’m sure it depends on the track!!! These days I own a Miata, but that hasn’t seen a track. It’s not really comparable to the S2000 (stock anyway).

Isn't that almost always the case. There's something to be said about factory engineering when it comes to comfort and reliability.

The blue one I believe tested somewhere around 600hp with the added blower and intake/exhaust mods... Great for a joy ride but just way too much for a daily driver. My nephew has that car now as he did all the work but I still have the stock dark red one.

Make sure to fully charge your battery!

This was my S15 engine bay on the day I sold it about 10 years ago……circa 400rwhp. Lost my licence twice so decided it had to go…..400rwhp in a circa 1265kg car accelerated well back then.
