If you read thru the comments, it was suggested that he was denying it due to the fact that he may have been riding it where it technically wasn't legal to ride. I'll go with that and give him the benefit of the doubt.

More importantly, why does anyone think Ford was being serious in his denial?

It's almost as if nobody has seen Harrison Ford during an interview before. It's a time honoured schtick with him, going back to the early days of Letterman.
