Badasse Box, Euro Bikes Go 30% Faster

A Bosch Performance line cargo bike came in with codes that indicated a faulty speed sensor and it was acting jumpy. I adjusted the wheel magnet with the sensor but noticed this weird object on the speed sensor. I opened the 'box' and it had a AAA battery in it which I replaced. then it was very oddly jumpy on a test. I removed the box on the sensor and read Badassebikes.com. I went to their site and saw how to place the wheel magnet to activate their tuning device, which makes European motors go about 30% faster. I replaced the box and set the magnet and now this bike runs better than any Bosch system that I have tried.

I tripped over that when I first started looking at derestrict options. One of the few external devices.
In the end I realized I just don't need it. 32km/h limit is fine for me.

I'm lucky to own a 45 km/h S-Pedelec, and I rarely even ride faster than 32 km/h (battery range!)

The Vado SL is a slow e-bike compared. I have had a PearTune chip installed there. However, I push the derestrictor button only on fast group rides with my Club. As the chip generates (non critical) errors after the e-bike is in the derestricted mode, I ride restricted to 25 km/h on my solo rides. I'm not in hurry, get a better workout and a whooping range when riding with the speed limiter.

Good research @smorgasbord! I just read those threads. There are still interesting unanswered questions.

What does a Badasse Box do and how? Imagine that some bikes allow for multiple wheel magnets for a more accurate reading of real time speed for power delivery sampled at a rate of up to twelve times per wheel revolution. By the way, some systems do allow for multiple wheel magnets. Now imagine that you installed three wheel magnets but told the system that it had two. It would display a speed of 1/3rd of actual;. The 1.33 number is my estimation based on what I saw and may not be fully accurate. I would like to know more.

Some want to pay more! An art dealer in Laguna Beach couldn't sell some paintings, so after three months she would double the price and they would sell that week. Paying more is so much better for some. Satisfying. I have a $6400 painting in the guest bath. It is made by a cooperate sweat shop in China that has produced thousands of them all the same. But the corporation is based in the EU, so it is all okay and I can still feel superior.

I am not at all tempted to derestrict. If I had a commuter bike, and was going to work, I'm sure I'd consider it.

As for paying more... It's all about perception. This is one of the reason that I am a terrible negotiator-- and I used to be even worse: When I get worked up, I use emotional reasoning to determine the value.

I worked on a fund-raising live TV show for 10 years. At the time, I was drinking heavily and more of a hothead. One year, they changed the way they calculated my daily rate-- in hours-- and in frustration, I demanded they pay me my old rate using the old system. They kept trying to explain to me why the new rate was fair, but I kept interrupting them. Reluctantly, they eventually agreed.

About two hours later, I called them back sheepishly and asked if I could still have the new rate.

Which actually amounted to a raise: They were good people, and after having a bit of fun with me, let me have the rate.

I learned a lot on that job. I think it was year six or seven that I stopped kicking Xerox machines. Good managers who knew how to get my best work.

For the life of me I don’t understand for what reason other than to transition to the trail heads faster. Ironically it was me who planted the seed in his head. I just didn’t think that he would take me seriously.

Art, the matters are fortunate for you in Canada. I'd love having my e-bikes be assisted to 32 km/h. However, the Euro 25 km/h limit just sucks. Unimportant to me on a week day, important for my weekend group rides. At what cruising speed do my traditional gravel cyclists mates need to ride in the forest to cover 104 km below 4 hours, eh?

That scene could probably be a lot of places around the world. Here's a good candidate just north of San Diego: La Jolla Shores beach with the La Jolla Peninsula behind it, looking south from the bluff above Scripps Pier.

If you're looking to overpay for things, you'll find no better place to shop than downtown La Jolla. Start with the shops around the Bentley dealership.

What is so funny is that a Lamborghini in Southern California will be doing 5 Mph on the 5, stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic behind a beat-up, smelly, gardener's truck. It is not any faster. Carmel is pricy too.
