Winter Sucks

My local trails are very wet and sloppy. We had rain/freezing rain/sleet and finally a little snow last night. It's been like this for much of December, a bit warmer than average, not enough snow to properly cover and not cold enough to freeze solid ... so still just a cold sloppy mess with slippery streets. I'm not doing much riding for fun right now, just transportation (shopping, visiting, etc.). This is also tough stuff to dress for.

My forecast calls for a return to more normal winter conditions (below freezing with sunny days and a little snow) after New Years.

Happy New Year!
Today I finished an adult trike build. Which was great because it gave me something to do in the rain yesterday. Then I went for a ride in the hills and had tandoori chicken & lamb for lunch.

How are you guys and gals doing? I seems unusually mild for the second into third week of January. +3 C seems very mild on January 10th for Montreal in the other CA. Everyone should be skating flooded plazas in QC.

Yes. Big dip in temps coming here too. -19 by Friday. I bought some new, lined, wind proof pants I’m trying today. I don’t have studs, so have to be careful.
As it has been unseasonably mild over the last few weeks, I guess that it’s only fair to say that change was inevitable. I’m not throwing in the towel just yet but it will take some doing to get me out when the wind chill is this extreme. I simply can’t bear the thought of being confined that long. Hope that you have better luck.

Do you get temps like that regularly? That's like Arctic stuff.
The coldest months of the year are Jan/Feb when temps can dip as low as -30 to -40C. Thankfully, those periods are short and the average daytime temps usually range between -5 to -15 C. Depending where in the province one resides the average mean can vary. We generally are a few degrees colder than our fair capital to the north or Calgary to the south which experiences more warming trends as a result of the Chinook winds. Being situated in a river valley where the air tends to pool likely has some bearing as why we experience slightly colder winters here in Central AB.

Just did a drive through Ft. Meyer's Beach. Still a disaster zone with less than 1/2 of resorts up and running.

If the resorts are still mostly really close together, it doesn't seem likely that tourists would even want to stay in an open one, next to a boarded up motel, restaurant, or other closed tourist business .
But the off season rates are probably pretty good ...

It appears they are redone in clumps so consecutive buildings get done about the same time. There are areas where it appears nothing has been done. There are 3 buildings on the Island we're on. One does not appear to be being worked on yet, ours just opened in October, but is still being worked on. Talked to some locals today. This is high season, but still pretty quiet, tourists are avoiding the construction. We don't care since we're typically gone during the 9am to 5pm construction day. The flexibility of retirement is nice!

Are they still trying to get peak season rates ? 😜

One of the paces we stay periodically is. The place we are in discounted because of the construction.

Just had a nasty storm go through and saw the lights go out across the bay!

Yeah this storm is a nasty one, especially down there. No real issues here, but flooding upriver (north), snow to the west, and possible tornadoes east along the coast.
