Winter Sucks

Just did a drive through Ft. Meyer's Beach. Still a disaster zone with less than 1/2 of resorts up and running.

If the resorts are still mostly really close together, it doesn't seem likely that tourists would even want to stay in an open one, next to a boarded up motel, restaurant, or other closed tourist business .
But the off season rates are probably pretty good ...

It appears they are redone in clumps so consecutive buildings get done about the same time. There are areas where it appears nothing has been done. There are 3 buildings on the Island we're on. One does not appear to be being worked on yet, ours just opened in October, but is still being worked on. Talked to some locals today. This is high season, but still pretty quiet, tourists are avoiding the construction. We don't care since we're typically gone during the 9am to 5pm construction day. The flexibility of retirement is nice!

Are they still trying to get peak season rates ? 😜

One of the paces we stay periodically is. The place we are in discounted because of the construction.

Just had a nasty storm go through and saw the lights go out across the bay!

Yeah this storm is a nasty one, especially down there. No real issues here, but flooding upriver (north), snow to the west, and possible tornadoes east along the coast.

Just hired the kid across the street to clear what appears to be a pile of blown snow today. We return to IL next Monday with predicted high -6, low -14 (F); that would turn an uncleared driveway into a pretty solid chunk. Still love my 4 seasons though.

Still no real accumlated snow. We're currently getting a snow/rain mix that will turn to straight rain later this afternoon. This is the top end of the huge weather front that's pummeled the east coast and has now mostly gone out to sea. Winter 2024 in NB, warmer, less snow (so far) and no tornados ... I'll take it.

Tuesday's storm is the first big snow we've had in 2 winters here in Northeast PA.

Last night's heavy rain melted half of it. Hopefully, the rain predicted for this weekend will take care of the rest.

We got a couple of inches, but the rain melted it away the next day.
From snow to sleet to slop to snert piles (snow + dirt) in just a few hours.

"This system will likely produce more than a foot of snow"
woohoo rock!

Blowing snow and subzero cold

This storm brings the season’s first transition to deep winter. High winds will cause blowing snow and difficult travel across most of Minnesota.

first transition to deep winter
I spent a Winter in Northern N.D. at -32F, -36C, walking to school, with Christmas in norther MN. What is interesting is that -40 is the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit. That is when you toss boiling water into the air it immediately freezes. What sucks about today is that I can't get anything done. I just want to ride bikes and read books in the sun. I have three bikes I need to work on and I haven't done anything! The sunshine is too alluring to be inside. Gott 'a get out. The latest book for reading in the sun is Classical Mythology fan fiction produced by a total babe & genius Ph.D. teaching the Classics at U. Penn. I am such a moth to a flame when it come to big brained beautiful ladies. Sucker. I can't help it.

The prairie forecast tomorrow is going to be dangerously cold. The ski hills are even closed. We’re likely about 20-30 degrees below normal for this time of year. Right about now -15C might be considered an acceptable temp to ride. Those are some wicked wind chills.

How cold have you had the 21700 pack and how much degradation have you seen? I'm riding a Grin 750wh 52v battery with 21700 cells and while I haven't had it out very often below -20C (-4F) I have ridden regularly in -5 to -15C (20-5F) and haven't noticed a big drop (maybe in the 10-15% range).

I start out with a room temp pack and my rides aren't regularly over an hour. The pack is made up of NCR21700A cells in a Hailong down tube package. One thing I do have in my favour is the BaseRunner controller is integrated with the battery and while I've never measured any temps I believe it is warming the battery a bit.
