Tranz-X PST power issue

Hello,

We've got a European-model Tranz-X PST that was given to us as a sample at a Eurobike tradeshow back in 2012. It sat in our garage, ignored and unridden until recently when we "rediscoved" it and found that the battery was bricked. We sent the battery to FTH Power and they replaced the cells and BMS and now it does power up and it rides fine– no complaints there, but there is one quirk I need to fix.

The quirk is, after it sits overnight, it won't power up again UNTIL you disengage the battery from the socket and then reconnect it back in again. We just slide the battery out a couple of inches, then slide it back home. After that, it powers on and off normally all day from the handlebar control until the next day, when you have to "reboot" it this way again and then it's good for about another day. We don't know how many hours it actually takes to lock-up like this but it must be at least 3-4, possibly more.

Any help or clues would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Does the battery itself have a power button? I know that on some of my bikes the battery times out a couple of hours after shut down via the power switch on the display, then I need to power it up directly at the battery.

Might it be something related to the new BMS installed by FTH Power - Did you contact them?

No power button or any controls on the battery or anywhere on the housing it plugs into. What does a BMS like this typically consist of?

It is a circuit board within the battery pack which controls levels of bulk and balancing charging on the cells as well as allowable discharge rates, voltage cut-offs and other features.

The BMS has to effectively communicate with your handlebar switch/head unit, and the different one installed by FTH Power maybe doesn't?

Here is a reading assignment (as long as we are all staying at home anyway...) ;) Gives some basic info.

Great article, thanks! I'll reach out to FTH Power and update my post. It's still under warranty, hopefully they can help.

Have you fixed it? I am anew member and just started to ride an e-bike.

I recently got a Diamondback Lindau e-bike used and the system is exactly the same as yours.

FTH Power confirmed it was likely the BMS they installed causing the problem. But I sold the bike to someone who didn't care and so it's not my problem any longer. I wish you the best of luck with your's and many happy miles.
