Another beautiful October day, and Beacon's Beach (a popular beach break in north Encinitas) was hoppin' with ebikes— way more than usual. Most were sporting surfboard racks, and few were locked up.

Had to stop and check it out. This cool front-loading cargo bike and my yellow Vado SL next to it were definitely the odd-bikes-out in this crowd of e-fatties of every description.

A friendly 30-something woman pulled up on this classy E-lux (a sturdy SoCal brand) with a huge long board hanging off the side. Love the color! Asked her what drew all the surfers today? Mellow swell, she said.

As you can see behind her E-lux, the Beacon's parking lot's under construction — again. This sign tells the story. They've been trying to stabilize this failing bluff for months now.

Obligatory ocean shots despite the bad sun angle. If you zoom in, you can see a school of surfers in the lower one. As usual, much more visiting than wave-riding going on.

This was also the SL's first errand — a stop at the vet for some ointment for the dog's itchy butt. Trying to keep the bike light. This was as much cargo as available storage allowed.

I generally ride closer to shore than this. But in theory I might be able to see something like it from a high bluff on the Coast Highway...

We see dolphins cruising and sometimes playing in or just beyond the surf zone quite often at the beach, but never as frisky as these!

Wish we could give them power meters and get them to post their stats on Strava. How many kilowatts does it take to launch a 600 lb bottlenose 3 body lengths into the air from a climbing running start against not air but water resistance?

Today's coast ride took me south to the Swami's Beach overlook and back.

First stop was the Moonlight Beach concession stand for a chipotle aoli dog and kombucha. My internist knows nothing about this, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Next stop and turnaround was the little Encinitas city park on the bluff above Swami's Beach. You could follow the smooth, stately southwest swell nearly to the horizon.

The waves weren't all that high, but the surfers waiting at Swami's famous reef break caught many long leisurely rides.

The highlight of the ride was a long conversation with the 30-something owner of this gorgeous Bianchi road bike. Love the color scheme!

From there, it was a straight shot home — mostly with the motor off.
