New Rocky Mountain shakedown ride. Love it 😍

Here’s a 10 min video that I shot of my ride along the Bench single track a couple of days ago. Some of you might have seen me ride this trail almost all year round on more than just a few occasions but I don’t recall if I’ve ever taken footage of it from start to finish. The unassuming trail head begins behind a residential area, drops down into a ravine followed by a steady climb up to the top of the bluff and then more or less levels out as one approaches a memorial bench at the viewpoint. A gradual descent culminating with a couple of steep runs down to the local tributary completes this fun and entertaining single track.

A couple of nice technical trail features along the Heritage Ranch single which is the last of four trails that I rode on that morning. Instead of cutting up larger trees that are impeding the trail, why not simply build it up sufficiently enough to roll over.

How often do you crash PD?

How often do you crash PD?
I’ve fallen many times and am guilty of more dabs that I can recall but no serious crashes, knock on wood. I’m quite intimate with the local trails and can usually count on exiting with clean runs so I don’t think twice about riding them in a more aggressive manner. That being said, I never leave the house without protective gear on and know what my limitations are particularly when riding on unfamiliar trails. Some of the inane riders that I watch on Pinkbike Friday Fails just cease to amaze me. We’re talking more than just skinned knees! 🤕

Yeah, I used to ride motocross as a teenager and was lucky to not break anything besides a wrist, but now at 65, I just don't want to fall down. I miss the speed and power once in awhile but with a bad knee and shoulder, the bike lane is for me. ;)

Yeah, I was riding dirt bikes well into my 30s and some of the things I did should/could have resulted in my demise indeed.
Reality... at 66 I ain't doin' that any more...

A buddy of mine who usually rides the trails with me was recently involved in a rollover in a side-by-side while wintering down in Arizona. Fortunately, he was the lone driver. He didn’t think twice about it at the time and left it untreated for a month until he returned home to Canada. Much to his chagrin, he discovered that he had shattered many of the bones in his left thumb which required major surgery and now he likely won’t be able to ride for most the of the summer. :( At our age, there has to be an absolute need to weigh the risk vs reward scenario and you fellas appear to be on the side of common sense. 👍

I've broken the top of me from flying off bicycles, and that was before ebikes! I like to believe that I'm smarter now but I almost got smashed in a roundabout yesterday. There's risk in two-wheel travel, but ebikes are a special kind of risk. Fast speed, heavy bikes, and riding in the dog butt side of the road. I believe motorcycles are much safer per mile traveled, though I never went airborne over thirty mph.

I want to shake the hand of the person who can pull this trick off.
And who the heck thought it was a good idea in the first place?!!???

Anyway, yesterday's weather SUCKED! So had to take advantage today. Beautiful 16C and sunny.
It was windy though so there was some battery abuse...

Down to River road on the way West...

Deas Island Park viewpoint of Fraser River...

Looking West at Hwy 17...

After going through Ladner, headed East on Ladner Trunk Road, then South on 64th to meet up with the Mud Bay Path...

I stopped and spoke to a fellow ebiker who had a rear wheel flat. His bike was a retro conversion with a huge battery pack in saddle bags on the rear. I can only imagine the weight of the rider plus batteries on the rear tire. No obvious piercing or rip in the tube. New wheel, new spokes.
Anyway I was ready to help him out but his wife showed up with their van to load it up.

Then off through Watershed park...

And we're out...
