Today's ride: Lancaster River Trail, just a couple miles down stream of Three Mile Island. Face The Fire. I wanted to be near an outlet in the event I needed a top-up on my pack.

I want to make a trip to the Lancaster in April or May for the amish planting season. Looks like the Picsyou posted would be interesting to also visit!

Today I had 3 hours spare and once again we had light winds but a threat of rain, luckily for the most part it was dry but around 10 miles from home I could see very dark clouds which looked very ominous indeed! My fears were realised a short time later when I could feel hail hitting me in the face, at first it was just small hail but a minute later it was larger stones which were extremely painful and of course it happened where there was no shelter

It lasted a full 5 minutes and then turned to rain which was a blessing, I never thought I would be happy to feel rain in my face I could see the sky starting to clear and soon the sun made a welcome entrance, now I was happy again and completed my 50 miles with a smile on my face My new pedals performed very well and with a top speed of 43.6 mph I think I can safely say they are a resounding success, even when the rain came they gripped very assuringly!

Howdy neighbor! Yes the Lancaster River Trail is beautiful. They just graded another 4 mile section. It now runs from Columbia to Falmouth. A lot to see along the trail if you look for it. At the Falmouth end there are some old stone locks from the canal and across the river is the old, still in use York Haven Hydroelectric Dam. Several iron and limestone furnaces. Take some binoculars if you can, there are a lot of bald eagle nests in the area. Enjoy!

Another windy Sunday but a very enjoyable one, I managed to stay dry this time which is always a bonus Another 50 miler in the bag, the last 15 miles were straight into a 35mph headwind (it sure was fun when it was a tailwind) and it really depleted the battery! It dropped to 1% just as I reached home and the assist switched itself off, thankfully just after my final climb...

My 2020 total is now 647 miles from 13 rides giving me an average of 49.7 miles, I'm hoping to add to my total this coming week as I have the week off but the weather isn't looking too good! Any chance I get I will grab it of course!

Thanks Dave, I really am lucky to have such amazing roads right on my doorstep, I have been riding most of these roads for over 50 years and I will never tire of them I really love my bike too, its just perfect for my needs! It will be 2 years old at the end of this month and it has given me almost 7500 miles of fun filled miles, I hope it will last many years

Its strange that a 20mph wind now seems like a light breeze but today it did, probably due to the seemingly never ending gusty winds we have been getting! 53 miles today (to round up my 2020 total to 700 miles), mostly in the dry but less than 5 miles from home I got caught in a short sharp rain shower followed by hail...thankfully not as bad as the last time! The winds will be back for the next 3 days but Friday is looking promising at the moment! A very enjoyable ride once again despite getting wet near home, it sure beats work

One of the reasons I love being on a bike is the pace. I’m never in a hurry on a bike as it’s already a step up from walking and I really do enjoy experiencing the environment I’m in. Slow is fine with me especially on these rural Missouri gravel roads. My current route is really two parts. The blacktop has me riding at about 14 to 17mph and it’s a nice ride with a mix of forest and farmland. But my favorite part of the ride, by far, is the gravel portion which is a narrow road with trees right up to the edges. At 9 to 12mph I’m really relaxed and enjoying the slow flow of trees around me and the ground under me.

Enjoying that slow pace also means that I’ll get better range off of each charge which is a nice bonus. On Tuesday I set out on a ride intending to add an additional 6.7 mile loop to my usual 32 miles. It was a fantastic ride. The new loop is about 4 miles of really nice gravel and a couple miles of pavement. The total ride was just short of 39 miles. On Wednesday I thought I’d try extending that loop around Perry Lake but that didn’t work out because Perry Lake is a private neighborhood with a gated entrance So I rode on up to the Hwy then turned around and returned to my new loop ending up with a total ride of 44 miles and 3.5 hours. That extra bit had the steepest hills I’ve ridden on the Rover with a grade at about 15%, maybe a bit more. Total elevation on the ride was 3,145. No problem getting up those hills using about 600 watts and peddling fairly hard in the granny gear. Average speed around 12.5mph for the full ride and 40% battery capacity remaining.

Having a chance to explore around Madison and surrounding counties has been a fantastic experience. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be back on a bike. One note about my riding style, as much as possible I’m keeping to lower PAS levels 1 and 2 in part because I’m riding the bike and not driving it. At the end of the day I want to put in as close to 100% of my own effort and I think that’s more likely at those lower PAS levels. There might come a time when my knees are not healthy enough to pedal as much as I am now and then I’ll use the electric assist more but until that time I really enjoy putting forth the effort.

1,300 miles for 2020 Only downside has been a sore rear end so I finally broke down and bought some padded shorts and that has made a huge difference! Well worth it.

The past week I found myself exploring further afield locally, all on the precious gravel roads still being maintained and protected, and not paved over at the behest of developers. These roads are a treasure and speak so much of our Virginian past, even tho they exist less than 50 miles west of our nation's capital, Washington DC.

Nice! I recognize many of those locations (the ford on Beaverdam south of Philomont is well known to me, and I think I posted in front of the same machinery sign a few pages back). The gravel network of Loudoun is indeed a gem. Where do you typically ride out of? I'm out of Leesburg, so I mostly ride the northern part of Loudoun (a bit south of Philomont/Mountville is about as far as I generally go).

Yes, bliss is exactly the right word! I’m not sure what it is about riding on gravel that is so relaxing. Partly it seems to just be the sound it makes under the tires. And I suppose it’s also the slower speed that is likely when riding on gravel rather than pavement. I know, for myself, that when I transition from gravel to pavement I have just the slightest moment of regret similar to when I take eat the last bit of whipped cream on the top of a shake or other desert. Sure, the rest is really nice but it’s not whipped cream.
