Shimano’s new 630Wh Batteries

More information here from Electrek... Good news for more range on the efficient Shimano Steps system.

Two of the new batteries offer 630Wh of capacity, which is around 25% more capacity than the company’s previously largest battery. That higher capacity combined with the efficient nature of pedal assist e-bikes (Shimano does not offer a throttle option) should result in fairly high range ratings for electric bicycles using the new Shimano system.
While it is up to individual e-bike manufacturers to provide unique range ratings for their e-bikes that use Shimano’s motors and batteries, many will likely claim ranges of over 100 miles (160 km).

Shimano’s new higher capacity batteries bring the company in line with other battery component suppliers such as Bosch and Brose. Last summer
Bosch announced new 625 Wh batteries
— effectively the same capacity as Shimano’s new high-capacity packs. Not to be outdone, Brose followed just a few weeks later with its own new 630Wh batteries. Brose’s announcement was particularly interesting, as the company had not previously produced an e-bike battery, instead focusing solely on e-bike drivetrains with integrated motor/controller/display options.

Shimano Unveils Highest-Capacity STEPS Batteries Yet

The three new batteries promise to fuel longer rides than ever with the STEPS mid-drive system...
I have mixed emotions with the announcement of Shimano’s new 630Wh BT-E8016 largest externally mounted battery
Great to see that more range will be available with the larger capacity, but a bummer that Shimano states it requires a new fitting port, the BM-E8016 battery mount
Does this mean the current external E8010 504Wh & new battery will not be compatible with the same battery mount

Unfortunately the new external battery system is not backward compatible according to the author at Electrek.
Other options are available... you could install the new mounting system or go with a aftermarket high capacity battery.

"Unfortunately not, as they aren't the same physical size as the previous models, so they won't fit into Shimano's previous battery mounts.
If it is possible to replace the old external mount with the new one (might need to be an out of warranty DIY job), then theoretically it could be done."
