Schwalbe Rock Razor Tires - Riese & Muller Special Edition

I had an interesting chat with a chap who works for Schwalbe North America which happens to be in the town immediately adjacent to the one in which I live. I was purchasing a pair of Super Moto X 27.5 x 2.4 reflective side wall tires for use on my soon to be delivered Homage Rohloff HS. He confirmed that for my type of riding, mostly on pavement or well maintained trails, that this was a very good choice for durability, comfort and performance.

I asked about the Rock Razors which come on the bike I am buying. He said they were a surprisingly good all around tire but would definitely have greater rolling resistance than the super moto x. What I learned from him that I thought quite interesting, is that the Rock Razors on the Homage are not the stock tires but rather a specially made tire for Riese & Muller that has a greater level of flat protection than the version. He did suggest I leave the Rock Razors on for a while and that I might like them. We shall see.

He also said that for pure speed and road grip, it would be fun to try the G-One Speed tires. They are notably faster running tires than any others that would work on the Homage and come in a 2.35" version. They have good flat protection. The main downside of them is that they wear out very quickly. The compound is very grippy on the road and not the most durable. So the price of max speed is more frequent purchase of new ones.

Hi Alaskan!

very interesting that R&M's Rock Razors are different from same tires for other bikes, have they mentioned other facts than durability?

I would try for a while that rock razors before change them for super moto x. I had super moto x but i found them too big, too heavy and (despite their design) not so good in rolling. Yes they are very durable and they have super protection.

Like wrote here last year, i like G-One series so much... but i would prefer a G-One Bite, unfortunately there is only in 27,5x2,00 and i was looking for a larger tire so i opted, like you know, for a Racing Ray + Racing ralph 2,35 bundle and I love them. Really...very very good rolling also if these are (light) off road tires.
Next time i will have to go for a new tire i will go for a 2,25 (not larger).

If in you, after trying rock razors, i would go for a g-one speed, more than a super moto x, but question is how many kilometers are you doing in a year? Have to change tires more frequently is a real issue for who buy a 4/6k usd bike?

I rode 10,000 km last year. How many kilometers do you think the g-one series will last?

That's interesting. I recently acquired a Delite GX Rohloff HS and just got the Supermoto X w/reflective sidewall.

Rock Razors are great tires for rail-trail kind of rides. They perform best when run in tubeless configuration.
When I look at my bike, I see it is TLE (tubeless easy terminology of Schwalbe) but only has Raceguard protection (which is a bit less than the Greenguard found on the Supermoto's). So, he is right, they are excellent tires but to extract the best performance and puncture protection, one needs to run them in tubeless. I am curious if Schwalbe did something new for 2019 models of R&M. They have done something similar Stromer, Tern before.

They are notably faster running tires than any others that would work on the Homage and come in a 2.35" version. They have good flat protection.

G-one has very short service life compared to all above. They offer near to nothing protection with tubes but in tubeless-mode, they may work well. Durability is lot less compared to the Supermoto's.

I am still going to stick with the Super Moto-X because they offer tremendous service life. 10,000 miles is easy for them. I had custom Schwalbe Stromer tires (sort of like 26"x2.15" Big Ben Plus) with greenguard and replaced the rear tire only after 11,000 miles. May be I am light at 160 lbs but it should be ok for 7500 miles with riders over 230lbs.

Any Experiences comparing the rock razor with the moto-x?

I have ridden about 400 miles on my delite go Rohloff hs with rock razors and since I only Doing light trail and mostly road I’m thinking of opting for the Moto-x as well. Either the 2.4 or the 2.8, but don’t know if the latter will fit the fenders.

I’m annoyed that my delite will not go above 42km/h. I’ve changed the tire circumference in the Kiox, but I had to put it far smaller than the real specs to get the speedo to show somewhat accurate compared to my gps. But regardless of what I do, I cannot get the Bosch motor to assist faster than 42km/h, which is a lot less than the promised 45km/h.

I’m commuting 50km so every km/h counts.

I have a faint hope that slicker tires would give better speed, but I don’t really think so, since it must be software dependent in the motor. Bosch costumer service said that my dealer should be able to fine tune this, but I have not heard from my dealer yet.

Any thoughts on this?

Cheers.
