Epic Ride To Peebles By Bike Only (in the rain)

1666890268142.png

I have been to Peebles twice this year but on both occasions I transported my bike in the car, I put that right today by cycling all the way from home! The forecast was showing light rain from around 8am, I set off at first light at 7.35am and didn't like the look of the sky! The downside of leaving at this time was the morning rush hour but I made use of the cycle paths and had a good laugh at all the cars stuck in long queues! ;) 5 miles in and the rain started and it certainly wasn't light! It poured down all the way to Newbigging at 30 miles, the next village was Elsrickle and I was glad the rain had gone as the roads here are just awesome!

The road leading to Elsrickle, its quite a climb here and some lovely hairpins to enjoy!

1666891077577.png

After the climb, I just love this road!

1666891149776.png

I had to change my first battery at 36 miles just past Elsrickle, the 25mph wind sure depleted it quickly! I took all 3 batteries today as I knew it would be a day for all 3 with the strong southerly breeze, after the battery change I had a break from the wind as I was heading north east for around 10 miles to Leadburn!

Some nice views on this road!

1666891931130.png

1666891999739.png

Then it was time to turn south for Peebles so I was heading into the strong breeze again, thankfully its mostly downhill to Peebles from here! I arrived in Peebles and the rain had returned but this time it was only spitting!

It was looking rather murky, the River Tweed was fast flowing today after all the recent rain!

1666892136782.png

1666892198827.png

I stopped for lunch here and by the time I was finished the rain had stopped and it was looking a little brighter, just outside Peebles I spotted this little road which leads to an old castle! I didn't go down the road to have a look at the castle, another day maybe!

1666892547028.png

Some blue sky starting to appear here, honest!;)

1666892703691.png

Just along the road the sun actually broke through and the temp changed almost immediately, not that it was cold but with the sun it felt more like a Spring day!

1666892875187.png

1666892947714.png

I was really enjoying the ride now with the wind now at my side and with lots of tree cover it wasn't an issue, I was actually on the main road out of Peebles but it wasn't that busy which was a bonus! I had to stop to grab a photo of this beautiful home with stunning grounds! The sun was drying the roads up very quickly!

1666893263261.png

Looking back towards Peebles!

1666893428560.png

1666893492916.png

I was now heading for Biggar where I would turn north and finally have the strong breeze at my back after 75 miles, the views were still very easy on the eye!

1666893728271.png

A nice downhill to enjoy here, despite the wet roads!

1666893829932.png

Nearing Biggar I spotted a sign warning of flooding, how bad was it going to be? I opted to pass on the right but in hindsight maybe I should have tried the left as I ended up with soaking wet feet as the water was still around a foot deep at the edge....

1666894032575.png

After passing the flood the roads were dry once again and I had the strong breeze at my back, I was on a climb but it didn't feel like it with that wind pushing me on!

1666894272699.png

This tree has seen better days, I wouldn't have parked the bike there if the wind was coming in that direction!;)The bike looks fairly clean here but it was actually filthy...

1666894479747.png

As I reached Biggar the weather was starting to look rather nasty again with very dark clouds appearing, thankfully my luck was in and I had a nice 25 mile ride north with the breeze behind me and no rain to spoil the fun! I changed my second battery at 82 miles so I had an almost full battery with around 30 miles to go so it was time to turn the assist up and enjoy all the big climbs back home! Despite the soaking at the start I had such a brilliant day on the bike, I was pretty tired when I got home but very contended with my ride! I only have 20 miles to go to reach 5000 miles for the year, hopefully I will get out again before the end of the month but the weather isn't looking promising....

Impressive ride and kudos for sticking it out in the rain. 👍 I can take snow and cold but when it comes to riding in the wet, I'm the ultimate wimp.

I have to say that the only thing that kept me going was a small glimpse of brighter weather in the distance, it took almost 2 hours to reach it though! 🤣 If it had been cold I would have bailed for sure but it was very mild for the end of October! Wimp and riding in snow don't go in the same sentence!;) I don't do snow...

The leaf-peapers have gone away for a while. We are between tourist seasons, (foliage and ski), but the riding is still pleasant and safer with less cars. As usual, I had turned the GoPro off right before a nice White Tail Doe crossed the path in front of me.

This video is nothing special. It was more of an exercise in editing than anything else, but it does contain some nice architecture and a peak at what was hidden by the leaves.

Just to let you know I'm healthy and visiting the most magical places in Britain. So busy I haven't been to the Forum for almost a week!

@Chargeride: Sorry for not responding your call to meet in Llanberis! The road trip is very intensive for me and especially for my gorgeous driver and English teacher in one person ❤️

We were at the Clogwyn Railway Station on Friday; the train did not go to the Summit Station because of stiff wind on that day. That was probably one of the last days of the Snowdon Mountain Railway operation this year!

I found Wales especially attractive but England doesn't need to feel ashamed with her beauty at all!

The Needles on Isle of Wight ❤️

I think I can describe the current travel as the best one in years! Only I regret I cannot e-bike here!

a fun ride to the Oregon zoo through very nice and expensive houses and forests.1300 feet of climbing on this ride. We were going to take our granddaughter for a trick or treat thing but we goofed up on the time. not sure if we could have gotten the trailer up some of these hills so we would have to take the easy way.

Yes, our walk up Idris was blown out, but I did a few magical walks in the hills above the Estuary.
Abandoned gold mining cottages in the middle of beautiful forests.
Glad youre having a good time

After a couple days of rain it cleared off and I got a 21 mike ride in with a barn of the day pic. I also rode through Tennessee Illinois, a population just under 100 and took a couple of pictures. The post office, the old billiard parlor and barber shop and the old elevator. The old billiards parlor is now an antiques and primitive store but I’ve never seen it open. My wife grew up on a farm just a few miles outside of this town.

getting ready for an afternoon ride. it was 55 degrees so not horrible with really good gore-tex shake dry jackets and rain pants and rubber boots. did not need gloves and that helps. I had already did two commutes in the rain today this was 13 miles. wife said she forgot her water I just told her to stick her tongue out.

Now that's Americana!

Trip to Dolgellau.
Stayed in a rather fancy AirBNB.
Fixed the oven for the owner in exchange for a snazzy designer handbag
dolg1.jpg

Set off to Barmouth along the old line converted into a cycle path , this toll bridge, 30p per bike, is half way along the track, used by locals to shortcut the trip to
the main crossing inland. All the planks are very loose, and if a car drives past, you get bounced in the air
dolg3.jpg

Took a few detours off the track, cos I love bridges
dolg4.jpg

Eventually you reach the main railway bridge that takes you over to the Victorian holiday resort of Barmouth, it was very windy on the bridge and trying to ride past pedestrians with my 780mm bars in the wind was challenging to say the least, even the fat tyres don't help as they catch the wind very well.
dolg15.jpg

The palm trees and the mountains give it quite the Mediterranean feel, only the typical British Fish and chip shops, Ice cream parlours give it away.
dolg16.jpg

Sat outside a Cafe on the front eating a steak and onions sandwich, heaven indeed.
dolg18.jpg

This is the start of a gorgeous trail called the Precipice walk, it follows the paths to the goldminers houses and the trolley track around the hillside.
I was doing a recce for a possible cheeky bike ride, the mtber in me was checking every gate and they were all bike friendly.
We didn't see a soul on the entire walk, so I was getting my hopes up
dolg5.jpg

Quite a climb through the hillside forest to get to this point, all doable on the ebike though.
dolg7.jpg

This is the part of the track where the gold carts came along, talk about a job with a view.
dolg12.jpg

You can see where theyve reused the original track to make the edge of the path,
dolg13.jpg

Unfortunately the next day was non stop rain, so I didnt get to return on the bike, its only 2 hours away from us, so I'll be returning in the next few months while its quiet.
The descent alone on the original horse and cart track through the overgrown forest and stone walls is simply magical.

absolutely gorgeous scenery in your pics, on a snowy day in our neck of the woods not sure they are a welcome sight or torture as to where I should be . . .20221102_103136.jpg

Snow? Yuk. It was 72 in Western Illinois today, which I’m sure is quite a bit above average. I got out and did 19 miles today and shot what I call an in town barn. I don’t know how old the house is this barn sits behind but I’d guess at least 140 years old. They probably kept a horse in the barn along with a buggy. I’m sure that was considered high living in the day.
