Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

I took the trails today once again this time with my BIL from Calgary. We did an abbreviated version of what I rode on Wednesday but nevertheless it was great to be out riding with family. It was slightly cooler than yesterday and slightly overcast but the smoke from the BC fires was quite visible most of the morning.

Shrouded in a light veil of smoke, Mount Rundle is still a grand sight as it towers above the Bow River below.

A condensed video of the Coastline Trail from my solo ride on Wednesday. It's a wonderfully scenic trail that is such a joy to ride.

The news is Jacek's Trance E+ is working again. (He could have fixed it). The reason for all his actions to dismantle and "overhaul" his e-bike was he got worried by listening to my Vado malfunction story, so he thought he could inspect his ride more carefully. As a born DIYer he could not restrict himself! :D All is good. His Trance is in good order again!

This kind of people are scary sometimes... :D

A picture I remember well after removing my motor for repair, it was actually easier than I thought! I'm glad he got it working again, tell him its a Yamaha motor and not to mess with it again! ;)

@DaveMatthews Mine is quiet also unless I'm spinning fast in a low gear!

@pmcdonald Awesome report, I hope we get more from you as its been too long! I hope David will return one day, he is very much missed around here!

@Prairie Dog Those trails are incredible but too scary for me with those big drop offs!🤣 That hill looked super steep near the end of your video, what a spectacular view at the top!👌

I actually told him! He wants to disassemble the motor this winter and replace the bearings!

P.S. His Trance was switching off during rain rides. Giant e-bikes seem not to be waterproof!

He reminds me of myself when I was younger, I just had to tinker with everything! 🤣 I do get condensation on my evo display when its wet but so far I have been fine even in torrential rain!

Man... that ledge looks quite daunting at times! Cool ride!

Excellent! But what was wrong?

My brother is such a laconic person it was hard to dig the straight answer from him :D
His Trance stopped electrically assisting him when Jacek rode during heavy raining. Upon reaching home on the leg power, he instantly took the e-bike to his garage and dismantled the thing. It turned out there was serious water ingress in the wiring harness connectors. He started working immediately to remove all the connectors and solder the wires directly, then insulate them. It took him as many as eight hours of work.

He was also suspecting the motor for water ingress (the e-bike odometer read over 14,000 km). Yamaha/Giant motors are known as not-really-waterproof, and the motor motherboard is stored inside the motor housing. The third possible cause could be water ingress to the handlebar remote.

After having had his daily work completed today, Jacek started working on the Trance again. It has turned out his work on the wiring harness was successful, and the e-bike works as expected. Now, he is planning preventive maintenance:
  • Buying a silicone cover for the Giant RideControl One remote
  • Dismantling the motor to replace the bearings, grease the internal gears, and possibly make the motor housing more watertight.
He has studied related fora, and he thinks he knows what to do to improve his e-bike.

OK yes... Those connectors can be an issue. Glad it wasn't a major component, even though this should not be an issue at all.

I did 19 miles today in very windy conditions. My barn pic is a little unique, it’s an Amish barn raising. When I went by they were eating lunch, about 15 couples. Horse and buggies everywhere. I also threw in another barn pic, a nicely weathered one.

I did 12 miles today, it’s just been so windy takes the fun out of it, 20mph sustained winds today. My last post one of my barn pics was an Amish barn. I rode by it today and it’s mostly done. It needs a loft door built but it’s mostly done. Built in one day using hand tools.

I haven't been out on the bike, had to go and sort my dad out again.
600m round trip, Im getting to know the motorway like a local road.
At least the accomodation is free when I get there.
Anyway, off to Dolgellau in Wales for a few days and taking the bikes as long as the van passes its MOT tomorrow.

Its pronounced doll geth lee and is full of lovely forest trails.
Crosses fingers for good weather.
