Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

Strong headwinds out in the valley along the Fraser river today. Discouraging even on an Ebike.

Morning dip…
Brighton Beach, Brisbane

Brighton Beach, Brisbane
7.55 am; 27 km
The Moreton Bay Cycleway runs behind the white pipe railing safety barrier.

Usually it is possible to add the 'out' and 'return' distances to find out the total for the ride. This time the wind was blowing a bit too hard on my way back and I took a shortcut or two.

Race or some sort of performance horses I bet. Salt water is good for their legs or so I've heard. Notice the eyes of the horse on our left. He's a bit scared. As is the rider. The other horse and rider are there to comfort them both. Wading out into that deep of water is not an easy thing for a horse first time. I used to swim with one of my horses. He loved it. Took one to the beach with 3 foot waves once. Talk about a freaked out horse.

Today's ride started off with 2 purposes - return some unused railing brackets, and run the battery down as low as I could.

My original destination was a lumber yard that's by the McCall Lake Golf Course on the map.

Starting off - I thought I'd grab a quick lunch.
Not far from my home, there's an A&W (Burger place for some of you). Yes they served me in the drive through - this isn't Florida.
20210413_122317.jpg
It was a simple 14Km to get there, albeit fighting a headwind most of the way. On the way, I rode past a COVID testing site next to one of the many golf courses I would be passing today.
At the time I went by there it may have been 3 or 4C, so some hearty souls out there.
20210413_125403.jpg 20210413_125301.jpg 20210413_125528.jpg

Next, I needed to get over the freeway, and there is a handy pedestrian bridge just a bit south, so although it was a couple of extra kilometers, common sense was applied and I avoided the roads.
20210413_132709.jpg

From there, I off to to Timbertown where it was a few minutes masked up at the sales counter and a few dollars back into the chequing account.

After that, it was a bit of exploring. Once back over the previously mentioned bridge, I headed south towards downtown and the Bow River.
Passing by the Harvie Passage, I was surprised that there were no kayaks or canoes out - hang on, didn't I just mention the temperature?
I guess watersports enthusiasts have more common sense than golfers.

20210413_134108.jpg

From there, I took another bridge over the freeway (aka Deerfoot Trail or Highway #2) and started my exploration of the bike paths on the east side of the freeway.

This took me past the Max Bell Arenas. I'd officiated many a Midget AA or Junior A hockey game in there over the years, and it was also the location of a crime that I was on a jury for many years ago. It was a non-lethal knifing at a rave and to this day I think he did it, but the crown presented absolutely no evidence to support their case. If I'd been the crown prosecutor I wouldn't have taken it to trial, and conversely, if I ever needed a defence attorney, I should have kept his name...

Bake to biking - going past Max Bell took me onto a 26 Km pathway system that follows the Western Irrigation District (WID) canal that flows to the east out to a small community called Chestermere Lake, and then continues on through my home gold course, the Canal at Delacour and beyond...

The arena is just visible on the left - I thought I had a better picture than that.
20210413_134349.jpg

Continuing south, I took a small deviation along the canal itself (not the paved path). It was just past the Bow Canoe Club Clubhouse, which, before today, I had no idea was there.
20210413_134907.jpg 20210413_135148.jpg 20210413_135545.jpg

Still going south, I crossed the Deerfoot once again on the access bridge that goes to the Inglewood Golf Course and also provides access to a large park that overlooks the Bow River and SW Calgary.
20210413_135909.jpg 20210413_140931.jpg 20210413_141552.jpg

Heading back North now, and following the western side of the WID canal, the bike trail goes under the freeway.
20210413_142344.jpg

They were NOT kidding. I am 5'7" tall, on a small frame bike, and with my dropper slammed all the way down, I had maybe 4 or 5" of room above my head to the steel girders underpinning the freeway.
Successfully getting through there without braining myself had me continuing north along the canal, before turning west through some familiar territory (sorry - no pics).
20210413_142619.jpg
Eventually I was heading west along the Bow River with a great view of downtown 4 Km in the distance.
20210413_144753.jpg

Having done the 4 Km - I crossed the Bow via Princes Island, I climbed the bluffs at Crescent Heights, but not before watching the fitness folks running up and down these stairs.
The fencing was part of the construction site just being finished that should reduce the risk of further home flooding if the Bow floods again
We had a bad one in 2013.

20210413_150730.jpg
20210413_150739.jpg

Once up top, I headed for home, via my Nose Hill playground. Tried a few new trails on the way and I think they will be on the menu for more!
20210413_162714.jpg 20210413_162957.jpg 20210413_162655.jpg

At the beginning I said I had 2 tasks - return hardware and empty the battery.
Both a success, with the latter being about 1Km from home, and downhill all the way.
It's why I almost always return home in that direction - any issues and I can almost coast the last 4 KMs.

No audiobook - too much "urban" riding and it was windy which makes it hard to hear.

Tomorrow - group ride again with 4 x 60+ guys who've had their vaccinations.
Probably a beer in there somewhere...but it will have to be on a patio. 🍻
We're locked down again - no inside sales or consumption.

Cheers

Phalacrocorax sulcirostris
Moreton Bay, Queensland
Okay, it's not technically a pier but there are several of those – long wooden-decked structures for seaside promenading – in the neighbourhood.

Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.

Thanks for sharing. I think you'll make many of us envious, both of your Creo and the beautiful places that you take it takes you!

A few years ago I was riding four ways:
  • my first ebike – Kalkhoff Integrale Alfine 11 Di2
  • foldable small-wheeler – Airnimal Black Rhino Rohloff
  • regular road bikes – Bianchi (aluminium), Pinarello (carbon fibre) & Dean Randonneur* (titanium)
  • Tacx trainer using Fulgaz virtual rides
* A randonneur or audax bike is fast long-distance road bike, usually with wider tyres, and comfortable and stable geometry.

Here's a ride on my titanium Dean Randonneur through the Marin Headlands area.

Although this ride, and many others, were virtual — the video of road, traffic and scenery were on a large screen TV — the Tacx trainer converted a road bike into an ebike in an intriguing way:
  • electric resistance on the level and going uphill – just like the normal road bike that I was sitting on;
  • electric assistance on descents – virtual gravity!
However:
  • gradients could be reduced in severity – say, by half so 12% became 6%
  • gradients could be capped – never more than a set severity.
And one more thing: no headwinds, unless you were sufficiently masochistic to dial them in.

Memories! For a few years I rode my bikes all over the world without leaving home, and did it with electric assist.

marin-county-fulgaz.jpg

This virtual ride started near where your Creo + Golden Gate photo was taken. I have also ridden a traditional bike – without electric assist or virtual reality assist – around the Bay area and across the bridge. That was even more fun, especially the Starbucks at Sausalito!

thanks for the kind welcome! love your shots of the countryside. as a newbie, 42.9 feels fast!!!!!!! and yeah, rideWithGPS (or any GPS speed indicator!) always seems to take a little bit off the top from averaging and sampling, i assume!

...

Seriously! The headwinds are my least favorite thing - yesterday was 20-25mph, and of course it comes in from the west, while you're going uphill straight into them! Just a fact of life here this time of year in the afternoons and early evenings.

Newbie to e bikes? you have experience on analog bikes? 42.9mph is very fast, newbie or not! ;)

newbie all around... like most i rode bikes as a kid, and a little bit around the city in my early 20s... but hadn't been on a bike since then until i got a vanmoof s3 for a city bike around christmas. great bike for getting around town, but definitely not as fun and fast as the creo :D

and yes, 42.9 feels pretty fast! definitely wouldn't be riding like that anywhere other than smooth open roads without traffic!

A baptism of fire then, quite a start to your e bike career!👍You obviously have a good head on your shoulders, speed needs to be curtailed in certain situations! I love going fast but I know when not to go fast, treat everybody on the road like they can't see you and expect the unexpected! I look forward to your ride reports in the future, enjoy your Creo!:)

No, it is the e-bike speedometer that is wrong :)
"Wrong" is a subjective term in this case ;) In my limited experience, if you go in a very straight line at a very steady speed, they approach the exact same value. Any changes in speed or direction and the accuracy and sampling frequency of GPS result in a speed which corresponds to a smoothed line across your path rather than the actual distance rolled by the wheel. Wheel circumference * rotational speed is a lot simpler formula than everything involved in GPS

My Evo display showed a max speed of 43.9mph today, a full 1mph faster than my gps! It always shows a higher speed than my gps...

A distance from point A to B over a known route is a fixed and known value. My experience tells me GPS is doing measurement OK (otherwise car GPS navigation would make little sense). Most of speedometers/odometers for e-bikes produce values that are different from reality. Typically, the e-bike display reports longer distance ridden and higher cruising speed than is correct. Specifically, EVO displays for Giant e-bikes are notorious for overestimating the distance ridden and speed.

As Rab knows me, I'm really experienced in these matters. Interestingly, my Czech hub-drive motor e-bike on 42-622 tyres gives almost exact distance and speed as reported by GPS. My EU "speed" Vado is in agreement with GPS when ridden on stock Electrak 2.0 tyres. (The latter is the result of very accurate design by Specialized that had to prove the speedometer accuracy for EU Certificate of Conformity).

Rab, make an experiment. I'm sure there are radars with display in your area. Ride by such radar at constant speed and compare your speedometer readout with the radar readout. I'm gonna make a bet with you your EVO overestimates your speed :)
