Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

Frost og snø de måtte fly...
Or, "frost & snow, they must go!" read the lyrics of a Norwegian children song called "Alle fugler små de er" (All Little Birds) that is the ultimate celebration of the coming of Spring.

We had a sunny Sunday. A Winter Sunday. As I, Przemek and Michał J. all met at the Podkowa Leśna Main (Warsaw Commuter Train) station before 9 a.m., we decided the day was absolutely gorgeous. We would only prefer the Spring coming, and we need to wait at least for a week for that happen. The group ride was just a relaxing experience.

The gravel-cycling die-hards. Two gravel bikes and a fitness e-bike (pretending to be a gravel e-bike) :) At a short stop in Krakowiany.

We've been skylarking! :D

Black Ice
Soon after, we rode in a road segment, which was hidden in the shadow. The road surface looked... too black. We all slowed down and rode with utmost care. CRASH! I fell right into a snowdrift. It was a very soft fall :) (Now, I regret I didn't ask Michał for taking a photo of me laying in the snow, and being under my Vado SL!) From that moment we walked our bikes until we got onto dry road again!

We parted our ways in Siestrzeń. I was thinking where to go for... ice cream, and I decided I could well ride back to Podkowa Leśna (Horseshoe-In-Woods), which is a special, picturesque and quaint little town.

Mascarpone & Raspberry Ice Cream. And hot chocolate with whipped cream. Diabetes or not, I wanted that! :) And I ate the ice-cream outside (in the frost), like they do in Russia (heheh) :D

With no better idea where to ride next, I was roaming around the neighbourhood. See the snowman next to a nice bike path in Grudów. Frost & Snow, They Must Go!

In the Sunny Street, or a local road that is the most important for me. It is the most straightforward access road from where I live now westwards. (I live next to the Moszna Stack visible here). The Sunny Street has been recently paved with gravel, rolled, and it is going to be sealed within a few days. Yay!

Very close to the Moszna Stack. Now, you can see the 300 m tall chimney in the right perspective!

1648993958663.png

Ride map. I made 2 km up by riding a Victory Loop near to the Stack :) I wanted to record 60 km for the day!

11 year ago, I recorded the "Fugler" in an unusual rock arrangement. And yes, I sing in Norwegian :) Maybe not as good as a native speaker! The last verse is in Polish (a song of Skaldowie that also celebrates the Spring).

One of more traditional versions :)

It looks like the Skylarks are singing and doing The Morning Song. There is a kind of dance done while singing it--flapping arms etc.

Way up in the sky
The little birds fly
While down in their nest
The little birds rest
With a wing on the left
And a wing on the right
The little birds sleep
All through the night
The BRIGHT sun comes up
The dew goes away
GOOD MORNING
GOOD MORNING
The little birds say

Sing this loudly to wake up people in Fire Camp for the morning shift and you may be told to F the birds and perhaps given the bird (finger).

So much for the mild weather today, it was positively freezing! Especially when the sun disappeared, still had a great ride though! I didn't head for the hills I was hoping for but did enjoy lots of ups and downs and some nice scenery!

It looks warm in the sun but looks can be deceiving!

Certainly better conditions than Stefan though with lovely dry roads to enjoy!

I didn't take many photos today, my gloves were staying on! I received an email from Ridewithgps regarding my stats for March, never received this before but its pretty cool!

One of the few cycle paths I actually use, thisa one is well maintained! 👍

The weather isn't looking promising for the next few days so I will rest my legs! Today was so good despite the cold, the bike sure made it an awesome ride and having just turned 4 years old it still rides like a new bike! 😁

Hey, unless you post a video of yourself from 10 or 15 years ago, there's just no point to it!!! ;)

In early December 2021, I filmed a couple of rides on my Specialized Turbo Vado SL for the FulGaz virtual cycling app in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. Both of the rides, linked below, are a mixture of gravel rail trail and quiet rural roads though eucalyptus bushland, farmland and vineyards.

I'll watch later, in bed and Im not sure the missus will appreciate being woken up by Stefan in Norwegian

Heres that climb, reduced to 2 mins..ok 2.10.
warning heavy old man breathing

I love the Lake District and we are up there later in the year for a cycling holiday. Mind you, we will be doing tracks and trails, but not as aggressive as this.

Great views and thanks for sharing.

Mrs DG has not been to the Lakes before, so I’ll show her this and tell her this is what we will be doing…

(Not Very) Cold (But Windy), (Not) Dark, and (Not Really) Faraway From Home :)

I used to be a craft beer geek starting from 2015. I had to stop drinking ales & stout since January 2020, as insulin resistance forced me to get rid of sugars. Also, the brewing trends resulted in mass making of the type style of IPAs I despise: so-called "New England", "Juicy", "Hazy", "DDH", "TDH", "QDH" ones; full of aroma but not really bitter; just juice. No reason for me to be involved in craft beer world anymore.

Yesterday, a respected Artezan Brewery (which is located in my neighbourhood) announced: "We made Black IPA by name of 'Cold, Dark, and Faraway From Home' for you. We used unique techniques such as [...] to make outstanding Ale. All of you who crave for bitter ales won't be disappointed!" Wow. Only 10 km away if I take the Sunny Street... This afternoon, I rode on a Range Extender of my Vado SL only. I was riding against a massive headwind. 70% of the RE got used for only a 10 kilometre ride!

1649088371874.png

Hard to believe! These workers could seal the entire Sunny Street in one day! I had to walk my e-bike to avoid asphalt where it was still hot.

1649088520537.png

The Cold Black IPA (Cascadian Dark Ale) at the left, and West Coast IPA at the right.

1649088619775.png

When walking my Vado SL behind the brewery, I first met the co-owner's son, Albert, who told me many details about how they brewed the "Cold, Dark..." When I was inside the store, I also met his father and co-owner Jacek M himself. I could congratulate "Hasintus" on the occasion of his birthday!

The return trip should be easy. I reduced the assistance by half and was riding pretty fast with the tailwind. The single Range Extender would do but I had to continue my ride to a store in Pruszków, where the RE charge dropped down to 8%. Reluctantly, I had to switch to the internal battery of the e-bike. It was rush hours. Again, I realized how good thing riding e-bike was; I could avoid massive traffic jams!

Unless you are contemplating a divorce maybe its not the best idea to show her any @Chargeride videos! ;)
Mrs DG liked the video, although she commented that it may be a bit much for our hybrid bikes, but we could walk with the bikes…

I’d have problems walking up there these days. Did a lot of walks and climbs in the Lakes, remember doing Helvellyn via Striding Edge, which was fun, but I was 30 years younger then.
