Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

About a week ago, we were heading over to Eastern Washington across the North Cascades Highway. I had my friend drop me at Washington Pass and I coasted down hitting speeds of up to 45 mph and then pedaled once I hit the flats and rolling terrain. The descent was a blast until I hit the lower elevations where it became a blast furnace. Some shots as I was descending.

Where those cars are parked by the hairpin turn is where we always stop and make tea when we travel Hwy 20!

It is a grand highway. About 20 years ago I was on a large group ride from Bow-Edison on Puget Sound to Newport, Id. Six days and around 400 miles and 10,000 feet of elevation gain/loss.

The author is an Albanian, isn't he.
P.S. Was the mysterious lady riding an e-bike?

She was and was running on fumes the last few miles home. Custom frame from a local builder. Definitely more powerful motor - zippy up hills but only four gears and she'd like more. She prefers her NON-e-bike but had full knee replacement in Nov so she switches between them.

Sai rides a Creo CC. It’s totally transformed her approach toward cycling and now she looks forward to our weekly outings.

Our next ride will involve a daunting 2000 + meter climb overlooking Nigel Pass to Parker Ridge along the Icefields Parkway.
We hiked Nigel Pass in 2001 on a short overnighter. I now forget the name of the longer five or six day hike via Shovel Pass (Skyline Trail) - got caught in a snow storm and the wind could blow our hiking poles horizontal by the wrist straps. We were in Jasper on 9/11!!!

Weather changes at higher altitudes can be challenging at the best of times. Sounds like a nice hike otherwise. On 9/11 we were just starting a 5-day self-guided kayaking trip in Desolation Sound. We had no idea what transpired that fateful day until the morning after when we encountered other paddlers who were camped out on the same island. Jasper cycling is on our radar in the fall including side trips up to Mt Edith Cavell and Marmot Basin.

A Sleepless Night Before An Interesting Trip

I really hope I could take a nap before I get up at 5 am...

Jacek will try to fit three e-bikes and the third seat into his car (he drives some small Toyota SUV; I'm not in the motor car technology so cannot say what model it is). The goal for the three of us (riding Giant Trance E+, Vado 5.0, and Vado SL 4.0) will be making 75 miles over Łódź Heights. The ultimate goal is visiting all places around bearing funny names, starting with Siberia and ending with Vodka :D The most interesting fact is Vado SL would be ridden by That Woman who is a strong rider; she insists to ride The Bike on her own leg power only. We'll see. I made Justyna aware we'd be riding in a hilly area where she might be forced to use the electric assistance...

Wish us good weather! It looks it might be a perfect cycling day if not stiff headwind. The motor will certainly help! :)

Another new high speed! I'm going to research more on these birds of prey, they might be sea eagles, not ospreys.

My friend in CO, yikes! At least humidity was 13%. Still muy caliente!!!!

New record on water consumption too, chug-a-lug 🤣
Looking on wikipedia they indeed appear to be Ospreys:

They are amazing birds. No simple skimming the water's surface and grabbing an unsuspecting fish for these guys. No, they go right in after them. I was out working in the yard years ago when I lived on the Pedernales River in Blanco County, TX. I heard an unbelievably large/loud slap/splash. Imagine like a 3 or four foot flat rock impacting the water at terminal velocity. Wish to gosh I had seen the actual attack. What I did see was an Osprey coming up out of the water, and I mean from under the surface, with a nice bass in his talons. I was about 40 yards from the event. I knew they were around. Osprey have always inhabited the area. But I never did get to see one hit the water.

You live in a very nice area. We use to go to the "hostel" at Lake Louise about 4 or 5 years in a row for telemark skiing. Wonderful times.

Trying to get back in the saddle. My biking friend died suddenly this week and it's a sad time here. Yesterday, I just hopped on not knowing where I'd go. It was hot. I stopped in some shade, which is rare in these parts. I guzzled some water and saw that these chickens were also hanging out there.

I was also having a problem with the Ortlieb or is it Ortleib? bag on the back. It's hot so I have a half gallon insulated growler that I carry cold water in. That was causing the bag to bend inward a bit and was twanging a spoke once in a while. I had to do some rearranging. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Strapping the growler to the rack took care of the twanging problem.

That was it.

Yes, I looked it up as well, thanks Reed!

A truly epic ride today in perfect conditions, I set off at 4.20am and it was a very pleasant 15C with a light southerly wind and it pretty much stayed like that all day! No sign of any rain which is always a bonus in these parts! I haven't checked yet but I'm pretty sure this was my quickest ever imperial century, just over 6 hours! I started with my original battery and managed 52 miles with over 3,500ft of ascent which is pretty impressive considering its over 3 years old now! Not the most scenic ride today, certainly not up to @Prairie Dog standards, your photos were truly breathtaking!

It has been almost 2 years since I visited Ayrshire (Rabbie Burns birthplace) and I forgot how amazing the roads are, some were pretty rough but some were super smooth like this! This is called Eaglesham Moor which boasts the largest offshore wind farm in Europe, I can actually see it clearly from my home and its 30 miles away!

This is only a small part of this huge wind farm!

Somebody was obviously checking out the wind turbines and not concentrating on the road, I do hope they weren't badly hurt! Over the years there have been many accidents on this road, mostly fast cars which treat it as a racetrack...they have now made it a single track road with cycle lanes and its now much safer!

Last week I cycled through California, this week it was Moscow! 🤣

I have ridden my motorbike on this amazing road many times, its a lot of fun on the bicycle also!

It was so good to enjoy these amazing roads again, I wish I lived a little closer to them but I shouldn't complain as my local roads aren't too shabby either!;) It was quite a workout today, I'm sure I will feel it tomorrow but it was sure worth it! The weather is looking good for the next week or so, but I will rest up until Wednesday to let my old legs recover! Its not easy getting up so early but very rewarding when you don't see a single car for hours!:D
