Neo Xtrem chain rings

After having frequent issues with the Shimano Alivio drive train, which has never really been that inspiring from new, and now also with me intending to compete more and more on the bike, I have decided to upgrade throughout.

The bike is already at a superb local off road specialist shop and they have just emailed me details of possible changes. My mind has gone blank, and I just can't remember what the original chain wheel sizes are, and the shop is now closed, so I can't ask.

If anyone happens to know the sizes, please could possibly let me know.

Here are the proposed options.

• Deore 10 speed Hollowtech 2 Triple chainring cranks (42t/32t/24t) OR Deore 10 speed Hollowtech 2 Double chainring cranks (40t/28t or 38t/26t or 38t/24t)
• Deore 10 speed rear derailleur
• Deore 10 speed front derailleur
• Deore 3 x 10 trigger gear shifters OR 2 x 10 Deore Trigger Shifters
• Shimano Hollowtech 2 bottom bracket
• Deore HG62 10 speed cassette (11-36t)
• SRAM 10 speed Chain

The rotor size is also being upped from 160mm to 180mm, as I was running out of brakes at the last event.

Hi Eddie,
I had done quite a bit of searching to get a chain ring guard on my Jumper. The 2014 Jumper has a slightly larger front chainwheel (42t) as opposed to the 2013 model. Finally, I ran out of patience and bought a leg shield to protect my pants. I believe the larger ring helps in gearing ratio.

I have the one you mentioned - Deore 10 speed Hollowtech 2 Triple chainring cranks (42t/32t/24t)
The model number is Shimano M522 10sp 42/32/24.
The rear cassette is Shimano Deore CS-HG62 10sp 11-36.
XT 10sp derailleur on the back and Deore 3sp shifter on the front.

I have attached the M522 parts file if you need to look up.

Are you replacing throughout? like brakes, hub, shifters etc?

Sadly not. Just the chainset, cassette, chain, front and rear derailleur, shifters, and front brake disc. They also picked up on my brake levers, but they have the wire built into them so even if I wanted to change these, I'd be stuck. I don't really have an issue with the levers or calipers though, as they seem and feel pretty good.

For what it is worth you don't need to be restricted to e-brake levers by all accounts. From my reading on Endless-Sphere these $6.00 brake sensors work well.

Those switches are cool, but they are made for mechanical disc brakes and you can't use them with hydraulic disc brakes. We have been working with Tektro on importing some of their brakes and Magura does not make their Ebike brakes available for the aftermarket incase anyone is wondering. I spoke with them and they have a deal with Bosch that doesn't allow it.

Eddie - I would go with whatever you can get the highest gear ratio, if you feel you can use it. 42x11 sounds pretty good although depending on the terrain and how much flats their are you might want to look for a larger chainring up front.

Many thanks for your input.

I've had a few very lengthy discussions with bike shop owner, who also happens to know the off road terrain that I shall be riding on very well. It has many very nasty and lengthy hills on it.

In the end I have decided that the bike will have 90% off road use, and much of that time shall be spent climbing. With this in mind, I'm going to be brave and try the following set up.

- Shimano Deore Chainset 2 x 10 (38/24t) + Shimano Hollowtech 2 bottom bracket
- Shimano HG62 Cassette (11-36t)
- Shimano Deore 2 x 10 front and rear derailleurs
- SRAM 10 speed chain
- Shimano Deore 2 x 10 gear shifters

Good catch Chris. I have seen something similar for hydraulic brakes but as I don't have them I didn't take much notice. If I come across them again I will add a link for anyone interested.

BTW do you stock these mechanical disc brake switches?

Andrew - I have a lot of different ebike levers that I stock, but I don't stock these switchs. Actually now that I think of it I might have some, as I sometimes order random parts for testing, but I would probably just run a set of ebike levers instead. I also have a relationship with Tektro and I have a bunch of hydraulic ebike brakes from them. There are some interesting new add on switches for hydraulic brakes that come on the new Peak now too.
