My 15.5mph cut off Haibike, pedal assist only.
First ride was awful, its noisy in a lots going on in there, rather than the single note whine of a geared hub or the near silence of the bbshd.
Obviously its an old motor with 7000 miles on it, but Ive researched that these noises are normal.
Second ride was awful, no throttle, Im just pedal striking almost as a new paddle wheel style of momentum.
But Im getting used to it, rediscovering an old skill from the days of pedalling, hill starts are still impossible, OK Im talking hill starts where its so steep you have 50ms to go from stationary with your foot balancing the bike to full power in bottom gear and the first three rotations just spin the tyre.
Those situations are a breeze with a throttle.
Third ride, the battery lasts for ever, its only a pokey 500wh 36V, but I can ride for hours, Im simply making up the difference myself, its slower, Im not resting on the throttle as a climb nears the top, I have to pedal and theres only 800W available at best.
Im concluding this is a good thing, but there are downsides, Im failing climbs I would easily make, and Im failing them in dangerous situations where Im falling back down out of control, add to this the fatbike tyres can get me up some incredibly steep paths, but I dont have the emergency throttle reserve for a pedal strike.
Maybe 155mm cranks might be the answer, they are trending right now.
Overall its a positive experience, Im legal for starters, can have a few drinks without the nagging concern that a clued up cop could arrest me for DUI on a bike with no speed limiter and throttle scooting back from my local.
So far Ive warped the front disk to the point it unusable, blown the seal on the rear brake, knocked the display off with my knee in a panic climbing dismount ,furred up everything with salt exposure, but heres a new one for me.
I spent an hour cleaning , oiling and painting it all up the next day.
Im a changed man.
