I have never seen a rat-ride/rod so rusted. Normally they are rubbed with linseed oil to arrest the oxidation.

Try driving a car in the Great White North-East Salt belt.

Normally they are rubbed with linseed oil

We here in the corrosion zone need better rust protection than linseed oil.

Never seen corrosion this ugly.
I live near ocean where salt dew can rapidly rust your truck shell, my door hinge mount on my Toyota rusted and few rust spots on cargo bed. It still works fine with creaking sound.

I just scraped the rust off, then polished it with sandpaper, then stuffed it back in.

I'm not near the ocean, but they use tons of salt on the roads around here.
The North East part of America uses lots of salt too.
