Confession: I rode a black (it has a touch of green and a touch of metallic flake) Vado 4.0 home tonight. It was nice, smooth. This is my weekend, Wednesdays & Thursdays, and I get to keep it with the charger. I now work 45-50 hours at a dealer of all high quality eBikes. This Vado is officially a demo bike, ready at all times for rental. Kept super clean daily. My new boss didn't want me riding other bikes in public or at events. It has the battery of the high-end 5.0 but with a more powerful motor than the 3.0. I get to work on eBike problems all day, I build bikes, repair bikes, test ride bikes, and bed breaks several times all day. Never when I have given a guided demo has someone not purchased a new bike. A hilly guided demo=buy. Velotric bikes are selling like mad after the CNN test report. Ride 1 Up is also selling faster than we can build them. The Ride One Up DRT is selling to fire fighters and cops and other butch types because their friends try them and gotta have it. I get to work on eBikes all day, demo them, and bed the new brakes all day. I am riding that Vado 4.0 XL this week and it is fine. Yes, I can make custom private bikes that will smoke it, but the smoothness is hard to compete with. It is a refined bike package with no rough edges. There is nothing wrong with going 35k.

Last weekend I had Vado then went running. It was the first run in a couple of weeks. I had and was recovering from the flu. I noticed that I wasn’t paying attention to my breathing and I felt winded most of the run. I can blame it on the flu, but I think Vado was at fault here. Breathing is very important as you can better control your heart rate. Find your rhythm and control your breathing. Also, I think my cadence was off. I usually get my breathing in sync to my cadence, but couldn’t keep it together. I’ll have Vado after my run this weekend.

dag gone it,forgot about my vados, had a rough couple of weeks with a perfect storm of ailments, trying to get better before i try the "vados" again-
heres what I think happened,i was cleaning up a mess you wouldnt believe, didnt have a way to clean my hands properly afterwards then I had to move a refrigerator by myself( got the ball rolling I believe) then food poisoning, that evening got the shakes and chills real bad, even projectile vomiting( wife didnt understand hollered at me for half an hour) next still felt like drek, wasnt quite as bad then seemed to be the flu, couldnt hardly get out of bed for 2 days at least the bone aches stopped, then general malaise for 2 wks, developed the mother of all UTIs finally threw in the towel and went to the doctor got a run around( found out about a spot on my lung) finally got some antibiotics, then next day went to the urologist, got some higher powered antibiotics, they still didnt relieve my bladder, went home and found an old cath kit and done it myself( had about 1100cs of retained urine, doubled up on the flomax finally got to where I can "go again" feel much better,I ask again "what can you do? do you have to cry to get help? so the vados are calling, one day soon- hope everybody is well,I felt so bad for awhile didnt care if I lived or died- much better now and you can believe I will get the flu shot next year( seems pointless now after my bout) had to vent a bit, thanks for listening.

Wow. Thats a rough go. Glad to hear you are making a turn for the better.

Projectile vomiting is no joke. Our first kid had that. Kid was in the back seat, behind me, and we were heading home after a county fair. It was about 10:30pm. I got vomited on from the back. Didn’t see it coming. No way I could be mad though. I laughed. It was just the icing on the cake for that day. Wife cleaned up kids, I cleaned the van. Long night.

thank you, strangely enough that is the easiest i have ever thrown up,usually its a stomach knotting contortion that feels like the stomach is turning over, anyway kids cant help it and some people can naturally expel it easier then others, the part I really dont like is when it come out your nose and you cant breathe( stomach knows best i suppose) nowadays there seems to be some thought about your internal organs having a bit of intelligence on their own, have heard about people receiving organ transplants and acquiring some of the quirks and characteristics of the donor

I smoked a Vado and thought of something but didn't know where to post it, so I thought I'd post it here.

The problem I have with my hub motor is that if I lose speed going up hill, I lose most my power and torque as well, and the motor has drag from the cogging of the magnets.

@indianajo mentioned his 12t geared hub motor that will pull hard up hill but doesn't go very fast.

I was wondering about replacing the magnets in the outer part of the motor with electromagnets?

The inner core of the hub motor would remain the same, and the outer core would be energized using brushes and contacts on the axle to feed power to the outer core.
The wires to feed the outer core could feed into the motor on the other side of the axle, if the axle is hollow all the way through, instead of just drilled half way.
That would also allow for fatter/better wires to feed the motor power from the controller on one side, and all the Hal sensor, and new electromagnet wires on the other side.

The outer core would operate like an alternator in your car.
An alternator has no resistance spinning the armature until power is applied to energize the electromagnets. The more voltage that is applied, the more power the alternator puts out.
An alternator does have brushes to feed the electromagnet, BUT there is very little power needed to energize the electromagnets. The power output is hard wired and doesn't travel through the brushes on the armature.

The inner core would remain the same, and the motor power goes through the Three Phase wires from the Controller as normal.

I figure probably 3 contacts and maybe a ground for the armature, like the schematic diagram for the alternator on my car,..

The power to energize the electromagnet(s?) runs through the tiny LG/W wire that uses Very Little energy. The brushes can last 200,000 miles or more and aren't even replaceable. (Although I've done it, but I had to take the alternator apart. Brushes used to be screwed in place and could be removed from the outside.)

I've only ever worn out my alternator brushes once when I had a HUGE Stereo in my car, and my alternator was Always Maxed Out.
My headlights used to dim with the bass beat of my music, as my alternator struggled to keep up. 😂

This is another picture I stole from the interweb,..

It shows the magnets, and I'm sure they are arranging alternating between North and South poles around the circumference of the outer motor core?

If these magnets were electromagnets instead, I assume that they could be much more powerful, have no drag when Not energized, AND I'm sure you could group them together to Emulate a 6t and 3t hub motor buy switching the electromagnets into groups of 1, 2, or 3 electromagnets to work together to make a single North or South pole?

There may be another wire needed to allow for switching of the poles, but there is NO extra computer programming, AI, Robots or fake Clouds of surveillance involved.
Just basic mechanics and electronics.

I remember riding in the front passenger seat of my sister's car to a wedding reception about 40 years ago, with my 7 year old nephew sitting on my lap.

There was a seat belt law at the time, but this was a special occasion, and we had to get everyone to the reception.

Shortly into the ride, my nephew said he felt sick, and then he said "I can't swallow"
Within seconds, he projectile vomited so hard that it was splashing off the dash. I remember pushing his head forward and down so he would spray on the floor.

So,.. if any child says "I can't swallow" you'll know what that means.

I've actually used it myself to try and keep from vomiting 🤮.
I'd keep forcing myself to swallow over and over until the urge to vomit went away. Or I barfed anyway, but I had time to get to a toilet, or garbage can.

Barfing when you're really drunk is easy, you may not even remember the event except for the mess you didn't clean up the night before 😂

Make sure that you pass out laying on your side so that you don't drown in your puke and wake up dead. 😂

That's why I call you Darth Vado, you work for the dark side now.
But you're not my father, and my name isn't Luke. 😂

, and bed breaks several times all day.

Yeah me too.
I've had at least two naps today alone!!

I should move to Mexico where siestas are part of the culture.

I get to work on eBikes all day, demo them, and bed the new brakes all day.

I work on my e-bikes whenever I want, but I didn't wanna today.
I preferred to take a few bed breaks.
😂
But Bedding Brakes is Fun!!

I've only done it a couple times while also testing my emergency braking.
I can actually skid the front tire on asphalt without going over the handlebars, but it takes practice and you have to release the brake as soon as you hear the squeal.

There is nothing wrong with going 35k.

My new e-bike will go 43 kph with a fully charged battery, but I set my speed limit to the 32 kph to be legal.

I passed a cop riding no-hands and he didn't even look my way as we passed.
I didn't know it was a cop approaching so I just rode as normal, and grabbed the handlebars as he was getting close and about to pass me. That's what I always do.

I need to have my hands ready on the bars and brakes in case something goes wrong.

The 12t has 12 windings instead of 10, so the torque happens at a lower speed than a 10 winding motor. Also the Mac 1000w had bigger windings than a bafang or other, so it is quite happy with 30 amps for a limited time.
I get to 30 mph quite often DOWN the 15% hills, so I feel no need for speed. I broke my jaw at 25 mph on gravel, so I only go that fast on perfect pavement on a dry day. Average about 8 mph over 30 miles & 77 hills, although at the end of the summer I can push it to 9.

I have no need for speed anymore either.
I think the fastest I've ever gone was about 48 kph down a hill? But there's almost no hills that are long enough or steep enough around me to see how fast my e-bike will go?

I broke my jaw at 25 mph on gravel, so I only go that fast on perfect pavement on a dry day.

I remember that, and that's why I bought the chin guards for my helmet,..

It won't help prevent a broken jaw, but it should save my chin from being torn to s*it if it stays put while I'm sliding down a gravel road on my chin?

Average about 8 mph over 30 miles & 77 hills, although at the end of the summer I can push it to 9.

I travel the speed limit (32 kph) almost all the time now because I carry two batteries, but the gravel roads I ride are Perfectly Flat and boring AF, so I ride them no-hands to make it interesting, challenging, dangerous and therefore funner. 😂

I do stop to smell the roses and play with bugs though,..

Back to the original topic of smoking Vados and riding ebikes,..
(I think that's what this thread's about?)

I remember getting my first motorcycle in 1982, a slightly used 1982 Honda XR200R.
I had riden it a bunch of times around my house when my friends and I took my dirt bike to their cottage.

We all smoked a Vado and decided to go for a ride.
I got on my motorcycle and was so stoned, I didn't remember which way to twist the throttle.

That's what happens when you get stoned. You forget all the things that you do without thinking when you're sober, like which way to put the key in the door. Teeth up, or teeth down?
I had been going through the same damn door for ten years, but I couldn't remember how to get inside the house. 😂

So my first stoned trip on my motorcycle was a slow relearning process, but by the end of the day, I had Mastered the basics of my particular motorcycle.
Like how to feather the clutch, and how to start it when it stalls, and how to start it when it falls over and stalls (the carb floods and it's a bitch to get started again.)

Not only did I get a Really Good Feel for my new motorcycle, but the feeling went deep into my muscle memory because my actual memory was stoned out of existence, so I was running on ether, or something ethereal anyway.

That's where muscle memory hides.
It's in the spirit, and it only shows itself when it takes over and does s*it that you didn't know you could do.

It's not all s*it luck, some things are pre-programmed and hiding in our brains 🧠 somewhere.

I used to crash my dirt bikes and mountain bikes ALL The Time, and got really good at not landing face first in the dirt.
I turn my head sideways just before impact so I land on the side of my head. 🤕

I haven't pulled that magic trick outta my butt in over twenty years, so I hope it's still in my coconut 🥥 somewhere to protect my face from road rash from the inevitable crash that is bound to happen again for me.

I do ride like an ass, going around corners and through pot holes no-hands, so it's just a matter of time before a crash at speed happens.

I've fallen over about two dozen times (three times inside the house. 😂) and fell over/crashed at about 5 mph three or four times so far.
I figure it's best to learn how to crash going slow, so you're better prepared for the faster crashes.

I have my new chin guard to protect my chin in case the muscle in my head fails me. 😂

@indianajo I'm pretty sure both my geared hub motors are 10t (BAFANG and Das-Kit).
The Das-Kit motor is actually an unlabeled 750 Watt MXUS motor that is dumbed down to 500 Watts Via the controller/display to comply with Canadian law.
I put a KT controller on it and pushed 25 amps into the motor a few times for short bursts of power. (20 seconds or so.)

I believe that my BAFANG 500 Watt motor is also the same as the 750 Watt version? (with some small differences?)

So, what about say a 14t equivalent version that is switchable to 7t using electromagnets and stator/armature brushes and contacts?

That would make a two speed geared hub motor, with more torque at slower speeds and more speed at lower torque in second gear? Using the same inner guts as my currently legal hub motors?

I'm thinking that this is a pretty good idea 💡?
I think that the basic logic makes sense? But I am pretty stoned right now.
Maybe I just need to sober up? 😂

I'm also curious about that 1000 Watt hub motor that goes 1000 mph (or so. 😂)
How many windings are on that motor?

the best answer is a powerful motor with a super controller and plenty of juice, while we are on the subject has anybody seen a different type of hybrid bike with a combustion engine keeping the battery topped up? he human hybrid setup seems to be pretty limited.

,..while we are on the subject has anybody seen a different type of hybrid bike with a combustion engine keeping the battery topped up?

No, but I want to get a small Honda Generator to put in a trailer to be towed.

Screenshot_20231004-162436_Maps.jpg

It's just under the 50cc limit for a bicycle to still count as a bicycle legally, and it has a maximum power output of 900 Watts, but my battery charger is only 400 Watts, so I'd be under the 500 Watt maximum for Canada too,..
