eMTB Options For 2024

Your kidding right? Detracts? I probably been ridin longer than you know.
And I have never had so much fun on a bike as my 60lb beast. Black diamonds, humph!
Heated gear, lol, nothing of the sort, but then again, I am only riding in -30F or so.

I guess we are all lucky to have the choice

Just checking Canadian pricing on the new top of the line Specialized status symbol.

Instead of a S-Works Turbo Levo SL at $19,400, I can buy 3 Giant Trance X E+ Pro 29s, one of each trim level (1, 2, 3) for just $597 more, or 3 of the mid levels (2) for just $400 more!
Insanity - but I said something similar for my friends Tesla S until I drove it...but I'm not buying one of those either.

The American price of S-Works Turbo Levo (not SL) is USD15000.
Giant Trance E+ 1 Pro is USD5600 there. Yet:
  • Unlike Specialized, Giant doesn't have a premium brand (S-WORKS)
  • S-WORKS e-bikes are made of carbon fibre. Giant does not offer CF e-bikes at all.
I need to remind S-WORKS is Ferrari or Lamborghini of the cycling world; and there are still buyers for premium products. Even if CF is breakable.

Ordered mine on AZ and they showed up a few days later. Installing them almost took longer, forgot what a PITA getting that last few inches of tyre bead mounted can be!!
Thanks for the heads up. If that's the case, I'll likely have my LBS do it to save some of the hassles. If I get in there on a slow weekday, they sometimes can fit me in while I wait. Hope they work out for you. Perhaps a quick review would be cool. ;)

I drive a VW, not an Audi nor a Porsche. So likely no Specialized for me...
I have been driving Toyotas most of the time which have given me great service and low maintenance costs through the years. Very dependable Indeed. That is all I really need to get around.

Not only excited but also doing the hard work of locating various dealers overseas in order to importone aka buying.

One thing is sure- the age of light+super light ebikes with BIG batteries and powerfull motors is here.

Imho Bosch will be fully ditched for Shimano EP8 by all major companies in the emtb. category.
We already see that hapening with the Bulls , Canyon, Merida, Focus, Pivot, Commencal, Orbea, Ducati , Porsche, Yt Decoy, Santa Cruz , the list goes on and may add Trek/Specialized in due time . So, i guess the beginning of my phrase earlier should have been "it is fully ditched".

Ps. for Mr.Stefan reading this: Don't forget to give this post a thumbs down , thanks and have a nice ride.
That's interesting, I was not aware of that. Your eMTB list is some of my favorite brands in this space!

A big battery weighs about 11-12 pounds. That’s about a third of the weight of the just released Trek e-caliber.
it also depends how and where they place thr whole battery , controller ; for example in BH Ilynx carbon with a 540wh pack, they don't use a battery case and it weights 16.8kg @9k $ price !!

Some of them have the controller as a long and flat pcb welded onto the battery pack.

Light emtbs.: between 20-22.50kg/49.70lbs

For ex : Bulls Sonic evo ams 2 with a 750wh pack @20.3kg @ 9000€.

Super light emtbs.: under 20kg/44.09lbs

Here we do have a few with Fazua , but Specialized knocks them down with the Levo (powerfull 2.1motor+big battery) , few others are powerfull as that one , and of course the super light Rotwild Re /Rx 375 with EP8 @ 18.75kg 😲

I disagree with the that.

Light e-mtbs should be below 40 pounds like the Specialized Levo SL and Trek e-caliber.

The BH is only 37lbs by my calcs... ;)

Opposite to the pedal-powered Lynx Race, the 2021 BH iLynx Race Carbon is offered in just one single short-travel 100mm Pro build for faster cross-country riding, with XX1 AXS for 9000€, at a claimed 16.8kg complete.

I like them light , so i agree with that 40lb /18.14kg limit 👍

But that would be the Super LIGHT <40lb. We have weight classes , u know like in boxing...

3 more for the catalog :

- BH Ilynx (540wh, 720wh with magnetic bottle battery , 16.8kg =37.03lbs, starts at 6000€

-Forestal SIRYON ( NEW company and a very exciting emtb. , 17.4kg=38.36lbs, 350wh battery, in house motor collaboration with Bafang) , 9000€

- Rotwild Re/Rx 375 ( 375wh battery, EP8,
18.2kg=40.12lbs or 40lbs 1.6oz , starts at 7000€ ) ; Can change the front tire to make it under 40lbs😉

Hard to choose, all this 3 are great. Same for Orbea Rise, Specialized Levo , although the price is not justified for Levo. Trek ecaliber....qualifies as a super light emtb. but the important specs are vastly inferior to any of those 5. Plus the design of removing the battery is a major No-No.

Pic 2 is the BH Magnetic bottle battery holder which is a very clever design , NO cables !

TORQUE :

Orbea: 60nm limited( Shimano ep8 RS)

BH: 65nm( Bh 2Es mag)

Specialized: 35nm (Sl 1.1)

Rotwild: 85nm(Shimano Ep8)

Trek : 55nm(Fazua)

Forestal: 60nm( EonDrive collab. With Bafang)

Shimano Ep8 rocks, outperforms Sl 1.1, Fazua, Bh , Ep8 RS. Not a good option for Orbea to limit it's power from 85nm to 60nm, that's almost 30% less torque....no good.

If u want high torque , medium size battery and win the KOM , Rotwild re/rx 375 is the winner.

Less torque but a BIG battery, Bh Ilynx wins .

To show off, but with tiny torque , Ecaliber is the clear winner, Levo Sl 2nd place.

Looking forward to doing some trail riding this summer and Bragg Creek, AB caught my attention. Lots of options for single track adventures there. 👍

This one, Moosepackers Loop, looks interesting, although it's not clear why it's a Black Diamond trail.
I suspect it's due to some of the climbs, but we don't mind those do we...
😂

I’m up for it! 👍So many great trails to ride in our home province. My own stomping grounds even received a plug from a Travel AB article.

Hopefully, it won’t be too much of a wait when I can swap out the studs.

55lb alu emtbs are becoming a rapidly obsolete fat 🐄🐮 . But nobody could have anticipated that this innovations in sub 40lb emtb. were going to happen so fast.

The range increase advantage of a sub 40lb emtb. or even a sub 45lb emtb vs. a 55lb emtb. it's way too great to be ignored. We r talking about 30% less weight for 40lbs vs 55lbs resulting in 30% xtra range for same size battery or same range for a battery that is now 30% lighter ( 350wh vs 500wh), that is a huge improvement .

Now I'm confused....weren't you declaring that a merida e140 eb was amongst the ultimate ebike list a few days ago? Last time I checked, that's over 55 lb?

Oh, and for the record, you can troll back to Feb 2019 if you want to see some predictions about lighter bikes - just look for the pictures of a focus jam .

As for your maths about 30% range increase due to 30% saving in bike weight???? Ummmm.....do you realise that in the real world bikes don't ride themself ?

Exaggeration at its finest. Yes, evidently my eMTB is an obsolete fat cow. Got it.
MTBR would be a great place for your posts - consider signing on over there. Or start your own thread. Thanks!
