The gas, 'Degase', is running at $7 per gallon around my town in Northern California. The upside is that it makes commuting by eBike all that more attractive. The guy with the pictured bike has been spending $400 per month in commute gas. Traffic is so bad on the freeway that it seems at times that walking would be faster. He arrives at both ends stressed out from the white-knuckle bumper-to-bumper, then all the lights. He picked up his converted Specialized Roll yesterday. We did a fun test run in the hills. Now he will be taking on the train which is much faster than a car in rush hour. And then do a 10-minute ride through residential areas to the high school were he teaches. The 25-minute train ride can be a time to socialize with other regular commuters, read, look out the window or grade papers. A monthly train pass is under $40. His bike has a cupholder for his morning coffee and giant panniers. What are the gas prices in your neck of the woods? What alternatives are people using? Any bike commute stories?

We are not that bad here... just about to tip over into the $5 range... I'm sure people are going crazy here... looking for alternate forms of transportation or ways to save money on gas. So, what's your best option? 1990 Geo Metro XFI or ebike? Ha!

I'll take one of these, but in a mid drive, of course!

Actually, a better option is to convert this into an ebike... I've got the bottle battery... gonna order the mid-drive motor tomorrow...

Everything else is already there... 9 speeds, disc brakes, light weight, comfortable riding...

I just finished soldering little wires inside a motor so this classic Gary Fisher will be all through frame. With gas at $7 I am reminded of the art thief apprehended when blocking traffic in front of Louvre in his stalled vehicle. During interrogation it became apparent that he didn’t have the Monet, for Degas, to make the Van Gogh.

On my ride today I passed the single gas station in my little town which is also a little grocery store and it was $4.99. This is a very rural area so probably not much commuting done by bike. Nearest city is 26 miles away. Gas there would be only a little less. Personally I have no problem with high gas prices. It will lead to more people choosing EV's, hybrids, and more fuel efficient vehicles as well as "thinking" before hoping in their cars.

What part of the country? Is that central PA? MI? We keep having refining and transport issues such a fires to the extent that they are above what the odds would make you think. Also everything is more expensive such as paying employees to the real estate leases from gas stations to refineries. That black and tan Linus is sweet!

Coastal Maine about 5 miles from Bar Harbor by sea and 40 miles by road.

Bahhaba! I love it. That is so beautiful. With beautiful places to ride. Are the fuel prices impacting the commercial fleet? They use a lot. What do you like to eat and drink with your lobsters on a Summer afternoon?

My local gas station has regular at $2.37 per litre.
That equates to approx $8.98 per US gallon.
Not sorry that I work from home 4 days a week.
I can get to my office in 20 minutes on my ebike if I hustle and 30 minutes if I'm lazy, but there's a stretch of road that is/feels dangerous (large trucks going too fast). Good news is that they are improving the bike lane on that route so I will be using it again soon.

It's been years since I had a lobster but when I did it was a cold beer and corn on the cob. I should imagine fuel prices are driving the prices up. When I was much younger I actually had fishing license for a brief period but just put a few traps out for fun. One time a lobster shed it's shell in one of my traps. I was amazed by how much bigger it was than the shell it came out of. If it had still been in the shell it would have been too small to keep. I cooked it and just ate the whole thing.

Gas prices are expected to be a bit lower here but still higher than usual given the recent carbon tax which coincidentally was offset by the .13/liter reduction in provincial gas tax. It’s only a temporary reprieve until at least June 30 when it comes under review again. A fill here costs $1.74 Cdn/liter or $7.91 Cdn/US gal.

Below are provincial estimates on what average fuel savings are:

Bar Harbor as I remember it was an absolute jewel. We passed through on our return leg during a 45-day cross Canada road trip to Newfoundland back in 2009 which focused on our other leisure pursuit of ocean kayaking. Since we’re on the subject of those delectable crustaceans, I couldn’t help but post this image of Geddy’s Restaurant in Bar Harbor.

Saving is not the first word that comes to mind. 🤣

Here is what it is like in my area today. Look at Vin Diesel. No wonder credit card spending has gone up.

$2.05 per litre here. I do use my ebike a lot for local shopping. But, I ventured out yesterday for some exploration on my DR650. It sips gas compared to most cars, still … I spent about $68 riding. But, it was beautiful!

That was a long ride! If my calculations are correct my car would go at least 307 miles on gas at that price.
About 470 km. Lots of dirt, high revving in first or second gears. Not exactly best mileage conditions and I still have fuel remaining.

I do run errands on my bike but more for the fun of it than a real need. We live about 3 to 8 miles out side of town depending on where we go, most of the shopping is 8 miles one way. In my truck that would be almost one gallon in my wife’s car, less. We are trying to make less runs into town and combine errands. Gas is $5.29 a gallon now. It’s the price of groceries that is costing us more than the gas.
